If they can do it, you can!
Here’s a perfect example of how Castle Ring Oak Frame can help you with your dream oak framed self build home, and proof that you don’t need to be an expert builder with decades of experience. Take a look at Jean and Phil’s project which started with the simple aim of building a beautiful, interesting and individual house.
Jean and Phil loved the look and feel of natural wood and had some great ideas about design. Firstly they engaged a local architect to take them through the planning process. Communicating with us at all times, they ended up with a design that was compatible with an oak frame, and once planning permission had been achieved, appointed us to design, build and erect the oak structure.
We interpreted their wishes and ideas and came up with a design concept for the oak frame – in a post and beam style, but with plenty of natural curves, jowled posts, raised collars and interrupted tie beams.
Jean and Phil decided to “wrap” the oak frame with sip panels so we worked closely with the sip provider to agree on the necessary detailing. With the arrival of the oak, we could then get to work crafting the frame in the workshop – a process that took 6 weeks. We were really happy to invite Jean and Phil down for the day to see their frame taking shape and to show them how we work.
With the frame complete, and the excitement rising, we transported the 15 tons of oak components up to Yorkshire for the final raising. Jean and Phil had organised the groundworks ready to receive the frame, and over two perfect days, we were able to raise the frame on site with the aid of a crane.

With the frame erected, Jean and Phil project managed the rest of the build, including the sip installation, and eventually completed their stunning home. Not bad for complete new build novices!

It was a truly memorable experience for all involved – here is Jean’s testimonial:
This time last year, building an oak framed house seemed nothing more than a pipe dream, until we came across Rob and  ‘Castle Ring Oak’.  We were totally inspired by the oak framed house that Rob had built for himself and for his passion and knowledge. From initial idea discussions and design to the final product we have been guided, advised and kept informed the whole way through. To be able to visit the workshop during the manufacture of our frame was a fantastic experience.

Rob is such a pleasure to deal with and the ‘raising of the oak frame’ is a time we will never forget.  Rob, Jake and Sam felt like they became part of our family for those few days and we thoroughly enjoyed their company.  For all of us, husband and boyfriends alike to be allowed to be actively ‘hands-on’ in the creating of the heart of our new home is something we will always remember. Once the frame was up I commented to my daughter  ‘ we don’t need to put any pictures or paintings on the walls because the oak frame is the art’. This is so true, what Rob and Castle Ring Oak create are true works of art and craftsmanship.

We are still smiling in Yorkshire and we could write a book with the comments of admiration from everyone that has seen it.

At Castle Ring, our emphasis is on individuality.  It’s about what you want – the look you want to achieve, the space you want to create, and the feel you want from your new oak framed home.  The one thing that unites our customers is they all love the look and feel of natural wood – and want a timber frame to be a stand-out feature of their new home. Whatever the scale of your project, or the size of your budget, we are here to help you build your dream house.

We are a bustling timber framing business with a wide portfolio of past projects. Over the years we’ve done it all, from porches to palaces (but mostly family-sized houses). We also specialise in workspaces and workshops. Operating from the Welsh borders, near Presteigne, we work nationwide and, on occasion, further afield. Plus, although we primarilywork with oak, we also use locally-grown larch and douglas fir.

In the world of oak framing, you don’t hear the word “affordable” very often – but here at Castle Ring, we put a big emphasis on affordability. Our prices are extremely competitive. Plus, there are plenty of ways we can tailor our work and trim our approach to squeeze into your budget. If this sounds like you, it would be great to talk:-

  • You are looking to build a beautiful, individual, interesting house (or extension, or workspace)
  • You love the look and feel of natural wood (and want it to be a focal point)
  • You have definite ideas about aesthetics and design (the stronger the better)
  • You have a builder or project manager in mind (or will take this task on yourself)
  • You are interested in the fusion between traditional framing skills and modern energy-efficient construction

Please contact us for a quick, free estimate. All we need to know to get started is:

1. The footprint of your building – how much ground it covers

2. The height – one storey, or two, or more

3. An idea of the overall style of your project – a traditional oak feel, a more contemporary post and beam style, or something in between.

So, please give us a call, or drop us an email, and we’ll get right back to you.
