British Standard Ironmongery is sourced from around the country for their quality and authentic design. British Standard’s Turn and Push catches are hand cast in solid brass and supplied in three finishes; Tourmaline, Chrome and Polished Brass. The Drawer Pulls are a traditional Victorian design stamped out of brass, while the pull Knobs are machined in solid brass and come in a mixture of front or rear fix options.

The Iron knobs have an antiqued finished and come in three sizes. Each knob comes with a rear bolt fixing. The turned Oak knob is a simple design made in Suffolk and comes unfinished for either painting on site or oiling/waxing. Each one comes with a front fixed face screw.

In 2012, twenty years after successfully establishing Plain English as one of the most highly-regarded kitchen companies in the UK, Katie Fontana and Tony Niblock launched British Standard. Back when Katie and Tony started Plain English, the business focused on making ‘standard-sized’ Cupboards that were fitted by the clients themselves. Over the years, Plain English has evolved into a bespoke design company valued for its understated elegance, where delivery and fitting of the end kitchen is all part and parcel of the service.

In launching British Standard, they wanted to create a ‘no frills’ collection of ‘standard-size’ Cupboards available to buy online. British Standard Cupboards are made in Suffolk to their exacting standards, and celebrate the best in quality materials and craftsmanship.

With British Standard, you design your ideal kitchen (or bedroom, or workshop) before choosing and ordering the Cupboards and accessories from their online shop. You then collect, fit and paint the Cupboards yourself, allowing British Standard to provide premium quality Cupboards that last a lifetime.

British Standard realise that you may need a little help with the intricate planning of your space (particularly kitchens) and their team are happy to cast an eye over your plan and offer advice. They also hope you will find the guidance that they have put together on their website helpful in walking you through the process and giving you confidence in making decisions along the way.

“We are paying tribute to the British craftsmen of the past whose honest, unfussy but eminently practical designs provided the original inspiration for Plain English all those years ago.”
