After completing their first project, self-builders Sam and Stuart Honour were keen to get their teeth into a new development – to create a pretty family home in the country. The couple found a rural plot in the heart of Cheshire; the ex-brownfield land was originally home to the village Scout Hut, and had outline planning permission for a residential replacement. “The consent was for a 1.5 storey building,” explains Sam. “The hard work had already been done and any risk taken away. So, we knew we could build something special.”

The couple put in an offer on the plot, which was accepted soon after – giving them the go-ahead to start development of their dream home. They knew they wanted something to suit the local vernacular, and also match their own style preferences. After meeting with Welsh Oak Frame, they knew they wanted to take advantage of the company’s architectural expertise and let the company’s specialist design team come up with a plan the suited their requirements and the site. The resultant design was for a cottage-style home of around 215sqm, with plenty of well positioned glazing to let light flood throughout the property.
Sam was very conscious throughout the entire build to ensure the ‘cosy country’ look was prominent, tailoring the structure and interior design to create the perfect country look. All the bathroom fittings and kitchen cabinets were ordered in advance – they learnt from their first build that the interior takes the longest. Although the home has been decorated with a traditional palette, the Honours have a mixture of heritage and modern design features. The kitchen is open-plan, with a spacious dining area that looks out to the garden. Large, full-height glazing lets light flood through this aspect of the home, and allows easy access outside – which is especially handy in the summer months.

Apart from a few site access issues, building work was hassle free. The entire project took just 10 months from start to finish. “We love living here,” says Sam. “It’s the perfect location and house. It’s southwest facing, so we get sun from midday to evening. Having a traditional oak frame, makes the house feel cosy and welcoming, which is enhanced by the use of tactile fabrics, creating a lovely lived-in feeling.”
