Up and Over garage doors is a general term used to describe two specific types of garage door mechanism; canopy and retractable operating garage doors. An up and over door is a one piece door panel counterbalanced with a spring(s) to make manual or automatic opening easy for the user.Up and Over garage doors are available in steel, timber and GRP.

The two different types are shown below.

Door Type 1 – CANOPY up and over garage door

Canopy garage doors are the most common type of garage door found in the UK. The spring mechanism at the top of the door provides the counterbalanced lift. A canopy mechanism is typically used on doors up to 8 feet wide.

Door Type 2 – RETRACTABLE up and over garage door

A retractable garage door has horizontal tracks mounted on the ceiling or sidewalls to guide the door back into the garage. The door panel retracts fully into the garage.

Canopy Up and Over Garage Doors

An up and over canopy garage door forms a canopy when it is open with one-third of the door sticking out of the garage. The counterbalance mechanism is mounted onto a steel or timber goalpost frame and has no tracks hanging from the ceiling.

Canopy up and over doors arrive with the mechanism pre-installed for quick and easy on-site installation to a timber goalpost frame (70mm x 70mm in section) or factory fitted with a steel frame for very quick and easy on-site installation directly to the brickwork.

Canopy doors generally have a spring(s) along the inside of the frame crossbar. The drive-through width on a canopy door is the distance between the frame uprights as the canopy mechanism does not protrude into the opening at all. The canopy door is ideal for manual use but is not recommended for automation. If you want to automate the door now or in the future, please buy a retractable door. See below for details.

Retractable Up and Over Garage Doors

Retractable doors have horizontal tracks mounted on the ceiling or sidewalls to help the door to fully retract back into the garage. This makes retractable up and over garage doors ideal for automation.

A width restriction can occur where the pivot arms protrude into the aperture of the door. On single width doors, the Retractable Plus Gear (Hormann & Garador) or Cardale Maximizer retractable gear upgrades are available to maximise drive through width.

About Us

“In The Beginning”

Mark, the Managing Director, of Arridge Garage Doors Ltd. “found” garage doors in a Job Centre in Wolverhampton in 1989. As a Design Technology (B. Ed. Hon’s) student at Wolverhampton Polytechnic he took a summer job as a garage door fitter. Having previously been a furniture maker he had the basic skills. Four months later, when 3rd-year studies began, he carried on doing garage doors from the boot and roof of his Fiat 127 in order to make ends meet.

“The Middle Bit”

Graduation, 6 months teaching in Siberia, getting married and getting a teaching job did not hamper his sideline of garage doors. Teaching became a bit stale and stifling so Mark went full time with the business of supplying and installing all types of garage doors in Shropshire, North Wales, Cheshire and Powys. The odd customer further afield purchased garage doors on a supply only basis with Mark going through sizes, fitting tips etc. very carefully over the telephone to ensure things went smoothly for the customer when the door arrived.

The supply only side of the business grew and grew. Google advertising, 12 web sites later a move to special purpose offices and professional full time staff (see Meet the Team) has made Arridge Garage Doors Ltd. Britains leading garage door discounter. The only ISO9001 approved on-line garage door company.

“Now”

“Every customer, whether they are down the road, in Lands End or John O’ Groats gets the same level of help and attention with their garage door as my very first customer did. The customer needs to be advised, informed and happy” says Mark.

As a result of this, a good percentage of customers – trade and retail – return with repeat orders. Customers requiring installation can also be accommodated as Arridge Garage Doors Ltd. has utilised and developed their network of quality garage door installers and fitters. Any garage door purchased from Arridge Garage Doors Ltd., at their heavily discounted website prices, can be installed by these fitters for a fixed cost. All our fitters are very experienced, do a good job, and charge fair and reasonable prices.
