When blogger Melanie Barnes decided to have a sort through of her whole house, the small, cluttered office was the last place she wanted to tackle. After putting it off due to the enormity of the task, she decided to bring the ‘big clear-out’ to this room in the hope that once re-worked it would make a huge impact on her day-to-day living.

Melanie wanted to design a minimal, functional work space that kept her inspired and would also make working from home easier. Melanie comments: “I don’t even go in the office at the moment. Most days I am busy beavering-away at our breakfast room table, which is far from ideal. After all, the table is meant to be the place we come together and eat as a family, not a part-time work station. Also, it’s hard enough to switch off from the job when you work from home, without there being piles of paperwork right under my nose the whole time, tempting me to do just a little more!”

The office is compact, so Melanie incorporated a magnetic wall behind her desk using Thistle Magnetic Plaster, from British Gypsum. This would give her a whole other surface to use, freeing up lots of space.

Using the Thistle Magnetic plaster by British Gypsum’s Rooms Made For You Range to create a magnetic wall, has really given this room another dimension,” says Melanie. “It’s been so great to have a bonus surface to think about when planning how I would utilise the space”.

Melanie set out to create a workspace that was functional, but she also didn’t want it to look too much like an office. So instead of attaching her work schedule to the wall, she put up photo magnets of things to inspire her, including her family, published articles and pictures.

Melanie also made her own chalk board from a piece of MDF and chalk board paint, which is fixed to the wall using a magnetic sheet. Finally, Melanie attached a little crate to the wall with magnets to act as a shelf where she can display plants and other accessories. She can move these around without needing to drill holes in the walls of her Victorian house, safe in the knowledge that they will not fall down due to the strength of the magnets.

Melanie says: “One of the best things about this room makeover is how organised it has made me. I’m not sure I can convey how much lighter that makes me feel. I was drowning under mounds of old paperwork, which has all been sorted, shredded, or stored. I can’t wait to settle into the room even more, and look forward to how this little workspace and magnetic wall will help me become more productive, and establish a better work-life balance. I feel very lucky to have such a wonderful, creative hideaway!”

Melanie Barnes from Geoffrey & Grace was invited by British Gypsum to take part in a Rooms Made For You Creative Collaborator challenge where five bloggers were tasked with using Thistle Magnetic Plaster to makeover an unloved room in their home.
