10 questions to ask

Choosing which insulation to use: 10 questions to ask

Insulation is one of the top 10 design choices you’ll make in your new home. You should feel free to challenge your home builder with good questions to make sure you’ve got the right product for your home.

  1. How well does the insulation control air leakage that can account for up to 50% of a home’s energy loss?
  2. Can the insulation create an air barrier without the use of extra finishing materials (tape, gaskets and plastic wrap) and labour?
  3. How quickly will the insulation pay for itself? Could the monthly savings outweigh the monthly cost of financing?
  4. How does the insulation compare in reducing air leakage in hard-to-insulate areas, such as basement rim joists, cathedral ceilings, crawlspaces and garages, without extra materials?
  5. Can the insulation help reduce the required size and cost of your furnace or air conditioning unit?
  6. Will the insulation improve the air quality in your home by minimising air infiltration to help keep out allergens, dust and other outdoor pollutants?
  7. Can the insulation shift with the home as it settles and lose its U-value?
  8. What happens if the insulation gets wet? (How well will the insulation dry out, e.g. after a roof leak? Will it keep its insulating properties through the wetting and drying process? Is it a good source for mould?)
  9. Does the insulation contribute to a ‘greener’ home? (Total reduction in energy consumption, overall use of other building materials and indoor air quality?)
  10. Can the insulation help make your home quieter, suppressing plumbing, between-room and street noise?

Selecting a spray foam installation contractor: questions to ask

Not all spray foam installation contractors are cut from the same bolt of cloth. You deserve the best, and asking the right questions will help you determine that you’re making the right choice in a contractor – not just in insulation type.

  1. How many homes in the area have you installed this product in?
  2. Can you provide any references?
  3. Do you offer a lifetime warranty, and how does it compare to your competitors’?
  4. Are you certified by your manufacturer, and can you show me that certification?
  5. What is your business history?
  6. Have you always verified your employees can work legally?
  7. Have you ever declared bankruptcy?
  8. Are you bonded and carrying workers’ compensation and liability insurance?
  9. Will you do the work yourselves, or subcontract it?
  10. How much experience and training do your installers have?
  11. Walk me through how you’ll take care of my home during installation.

ECO Spray-Foam Systems Ltd uses the Icynene Insulation System. Icynene produces a series of soft, flexible spray foam insulation products that deliver up to 50% greater energy savings when compared to other insulation products. Icynene is perfect for loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, timber frame and dry-lining insulation, sound insulation, and more.

When sprayed in place Icynene expands completely filling all cavities and voids creating a sealed building envelope which eliminates air leakage/infiltration. Air leakage/infiltration accounts for up to 50% of heat loss from a building. Unlike other foams, Icynene’s unique polyicynene formulation is 100% water blown and therefore contains no harmful agents, volatile organic chemicals, HCFCs, HFAs, HFCs or formaldehyde.

Icynene has been successfully tested and certified for applications directly to the underside of breathable and non-breathable roof membranes and felts and recently received BBA certification for this application. Icynene absorbs the lowest amount of moisture and has the highest level of vapour resistivity of any soft foam on the market.
