A £3.6m grant has been secured to help build affordable homes for workers in one of Scotland’s rural property hotspots, it has been announced.

The Arran Development Trust (ADT) is striving to build more than 40 homes for local families struggling to get onto the housing market due to the high cost of property.

The Scottish Government’s Rural & Islands Housing Fund has awarded the ADT with the funds to increase the supply of affordable homes in the countryside.

The ADT will use the £3.6m, as part of an £8.5m financial package, to provide 43 affordable rental homes as well as 14 self build plots. These self build plots have already received more than 60 expressions of interest, although it remains to be seen how allocation for the plots will be handled.

Barry Mochan, chairman of the Arran Development Trust, said: “This is a wonderful achievement for a community group to secure a grant offer of this magnitude and it will have such a positive immediate impact on the local community.

“The local community have wanted and needed this boost for so long and all the hard work getting it to this stage has finally paid off. We anticipate being in a position to start the build around spring 2020 and are actively working on this now.”

Affordable Housing Boost

It was revealed this week that the delivery of affordable housing in the UK has stagnated over the last 10 years, but Scotland is bucking the trend, supplying the most affordable homes per person (16) per 10,000.

Affordable housing has become less available in Arran as house prices increased, leaving local residents and those relocating to the island in vital professions and everyday jobs unable to settle, but the ADT’s plans could prevent the problems gripping the population from increasing.

More and more self and custom build schemes are hoping to reverse the trend of homes becoming harder to afford. Earlier this week, a custom build housing scheme was announced in Essex that its developers hope can ease the burden on homebuilding in the UK.

Self build offers a solution to escalating house prices because it enables people to create and live in their dream home while working to a budget they can afford to.
