Self builders can reduce the stress surrounding their project by using suppliers who sign up to the National Custom and Self Build Association’s (NaCSBA) Code of Practice.

Occasionally, self builders can experience issues with suppliers or products, which led NaCSBA to create its Code of Practice. This offers surety to self builders, as it requires suppliers to have truthful adverts and clear – and fair – contracts.

All of NaCSBA’s members that supply products or services are signed up to its Code of Practice, meaning that they are a trusted operator in the custom and self build industry.

The Code of Practice ensures that should a complaint against a supplier be made, the grievance will be raised via NaCSBA and its complaints committee will help broker a solution.

Clear contracts and setting expectations early on will usually avoid things going wrong on a build, but with so many processes and products to buy and slot-in to the build, problems can occur.

Settling Disputes

In the first instance, this is pursued using impartial members of NaCSBA’s board to mediate the complaint, and if this fails to secure a resolution then the matter will be taken through an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process to achieve a solution.

To do this NaCSBA uses the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), with the maximum cost to the consumer of just £50, as NaCSBA and the member fund the majority of the cost.

If your complaint is upheld, the solution could be in range of forms, such as replacement products for damaged and incorrect items, and/or compensation for the inconvenience incurred, with each case judged individually.

Significantly, NaCSBA works to help the self builder solve their issues as well ensuring the NaCSBA member both fulfils their duty, preventing the grievance from escalating.

Andrew Baddeley-Chappell, NaCSBA CEO said, “NaCSBA’s Code of Practice represents a new level of confidence in our members, demonstrating that they are reputable and trustworthy operatives in the world of custom and self build. This takes some of the worry out of the process for people as they select these core companies to take on aspects of their dream build.”
