We are going to extend our kitchen which is currently a one storey building. The extension will be twice as wide and two storey with two bedrooms above. We would like to live in the house while it is being done and wondered if the extension’s walls (etc) could be built while we are living in it, with the current kitchen being knocked down later or at least to the first floor stage. We will be using polystyrene bricks as the build window is small (we live in the Scottish highlands).

Any thoughts or advice would be welcome.

If no work is being carried out in the main house, then yes. Watch out for interruptions to services though, and there will be the standard ‘client living on site’ surcharge from the contractor! You’ll need to address the project as a whole – eg will there be enough parking?
