I’m hearing lots of stories of people getting through-the-roof prices on heating oil deliveries. In many cases the price has more than doubled since January – people are having to pay 70-80p a litre, more in some rural areas.

Whilst it’s tempting to use this news to advocate the greater price independence and levels of self-sufficiency that renewables give you – heat pumps in particular are looking pretty favourable right now – it’s worth pointing out that, if you’re planning a new home or undergoing major structural work on your existing one, the key surely has to be minimise energy demand – and that means insulation.
