What is the best way of sound proofing a timber frame?

This is quite a complex question. It depends on what exactly you are trying to achieve and whether you are talking about external walls, internal walls or floors, and whether you are worried about airborne sound or impact sound. Generally adding insulation and mass (double plasterboard) works well. Ensuring separation between layers is excellent but sometimes difficult to achieve. And avoiding holes for downlighters and service pipes is also a good idea (applies equally well to masonry structures). Check the Robust Details website if you want to know much more about this complex and fascinating subject!
