The self build and custom build sector has been recognised by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) as an important source of work for small and medium-sized house builders (SMEs).

This is the first time the FMB House Builders’ Survey 2019* has evidenced the importance of the sector for its SME members, and marks an important development for the self build and custom build industry.

The FMB has close links with the SME market, which has a significant role in providing housing in the UK. 

The government has tasked itself to create 300,000 homes per year by the mid 2020s, but it was revealed earlier this month that the number of new build homes under construction in the UK has fallen to the slowest quarterly rate for three years.

Assessing the Housing Market

With these statistics indicating that an alternative approach is needed for homebuilding in the UK, self build’s influence is growing with regards to homebuilding in the UK, and this FMB acknowledgement reflects that. 

Andrew Baddeley-Chappell, CEO, National Custom and Self Build Association said: “Custom and self build has the potential to help the government reach its targets of creating 300,000 homes per year by the mid 2020s, and the SME sector is crucial in delivering this. NaCSBA continues to work to help more people achieve their ambition of having a home that reflects their needs, choices and budgets.”

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said “What this new research shows is that custom and self build can help bolster SMEs because, without local builders to help find land, service the plots and to build the houses, Custom and self build delivery is much more difficult.”

The FMB House Builders’ Survey 2019 is an annual assessment of the housing market and the constraints facing SMEs, which this year received 154 responses from SME firms during August 2019.
