Gareth and Lisa Maxwell’s custom build project in Essex is one of the first examples of how self build in the UK might shape up, as plans for large-scale serviced plots become more prevalent

Discussions with Chair of the National Custom and Self Build Association, Michael Holmes, who has been seconded from Centaur Media to NaCSBA for the past 30 months to help grow the industry on behalf of Homebuilding & Renovating’s advertisers and exhibitors, have led to a commitment from Government to do whatever it takes on the policy front to get the sector. It wants the sector to deliver up to 30% of new homes by 2030 — around 50–60,000 new homes a year, closer to the average of 40% seen across other developed economies.

Secretary of State Sajid Javid and Housing and Planning Minister Gavin Barwell have stated that the sector is a key component in their plans to beat the housing crisis, delivering high quality, sustainable homes that extend choice and also lead the way with the use of off-site construction.

May’s policy team at Number 10 and the Bank of England regulators will have to ensure barriers to growth in the sector are swept away, and that the land and finance required to grow the custom build and self build sectors are made available.
