I will be starting a timber frame new-build this year in Northern Ireland and I’m getting conflicting advice on timber frame build options. Due to poor ground conditions I can’t have a block or brick outer skin so it has to be rendered. I’ve been advised that because of that, I should consider going for an 8″ frame anstead of 6″ so I can add more insulation. Others have advised that this is over-kill and I should just use insulated plasterboard internally over a 6″ frame. I’m also baffled by the insulation options. Some say rigid is better as it won’t sag, other say rockwool or cellulose would be better and they don’t sag! Its difficult to get independant advice! Even the choice of render is baffling and I’ve heard some scary prices for render. Any advice is very much appreciated!
