Nearly half of boiler owners in the UK have never asked for the service history of a boiler upon moving into a new home, a new survey has revealed.
The Worcester Bosch survey also showed that 18% of homeowners believe that servicing is unnecessary until a boiler breaks down.
Worcester Bosch conducted the survey ahead of Gas Safety Week (15-21 September) to test the UK’s knowledge of their heating systems.
A total of 48% chose not to ask for their boiler’s service history after moving home, while 30% had not had their boiled serviced for over 12 months.
Another of the revealing statistics was that a tenth of the UK population admitted to never having their boiler serviced.
The boiler manufacturer is concerned that this lack of boiler understanding — especially with the winter months approaching, the most common time for boilers to break down – could cause problems for people in the UK who could be left without hot water or heating if their boilers require fixing.
Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management from Worcester Bosch, said: “It’s extremely important to understand the importance of servicing your boiler. Not only does an annual service ensure the boiler is running smoothly, you could be subjecting yourselves and your loved ones to safety risks, particularly with older, open flue boilers.”
Worcester Bosch reserved praise for Northern Ireland’s gas safety knowledge, reporting that prior to the survey almost three quarters of the population knew that their warranty would be voided without regular servicing.
Choosing a Boiler for Your Self Build
If you are self building a new home then the size of your property and your household requirements for heating and water will determine the best type of boiler for you.
If you don’t have mains gas then renewables such as solar panels, heat pumps and biomass boilers are viable options as fuel sources, particularly for those living off the main grid.
The government’s Renewable Heat Incentive means that if it is less expensive to install renewables, with biomass boilers among the types of renewable technology covered by the scheme.
Alternatively, if you are renovating an older property then having a new high-efficiency boiler is one of the quickest ways to augment the energy rating of your home.
