Today’s news that troubled housebuilder Taylor Wimpey has sent out a rather shirty letter to its subcontractors demanding that they cut costs on site by 20% and send a letter – by the end of next week – confirming how they intend to do so is a pretty stark example of how the construction industry is battening down.

It’s also a very interesting example to self-builders of how they can nail down prices on labour (and materials) at the moment. Anyone building or renovating is currently in a pretty strong position to enjoy significant savings, it seems.
