In order to reduce energy bills and increase the energy efficiency of our homes, there is increasing focus on the effectiveness of the insulation and airtightness measures we install. One area that needs particular attention is between the ceiling and the loft space.
With the popularity of downlights fitted into ceilings in modern homes, it can be difficult to maintain desired levels of airtightness. Downlights can allow heat to escape through the fittings, and, as they project through the ceiling into the loft, they can provide an obstacle for the smooth laying of insulation. UK building regulations require that loft insulation should be laid continuously and downlights can stop this from happening leading to cold spots.
If your loft insulation isn’t working to its full potential then you will experience higher levels of heat loss, making your home feel cold. Running your heating system for longer in order to maintain a comfortable internal temperature will increase your energy bills, which most of us are constantly trying to avoid.
In order to combat this problem, whilst you can focus on the quality and effectiveness of your insulation, you also need to pay particular attention to those smaller joints and openings through which air can escape. Air leakages are often found in joints where there may be small openings, such as around the loft hatch or above light fittings.
