I’m finally creating my dream reading nook – here are some of the cosiest ideas I’ve found on Wayfair

There's nothing better than settling down with a good book, so it's no surprise that more and more people are adding reading nooks to their living spaces.

While most homes don't have space for a dedicated library, a reading nook can easily be slotted into an existing area without taking up too much room. And, in my opinion, I'd much rather curl up in a cosy corner anyway.

After years of longing for a reading nook of my own, I've finally decided to add one to my living room design, and have shared five ideas from Wayfair that I'm drawing inspiration from.

1. Layer the lighting for a cosy feel

Lighting is arguably the most important element to get right in your reading nook. It needs to be bright enough for comfortable reading but gentle enough to feel warm and cocooning.

The answer? A layered lighting design. By combining a range of different sources including candles, task lights and ambient lighting you can create a calming atmosphere that's perfect for snuggling up with a book, as shown in the photo above by Wayfair.

"Begin with soft ambient lighting to establish an overall warm setting, then introduce focused task lighting, such as a well-placed table or wall lights, to provide sufficient light for reading," says Massimo Buster Minale, Founder and Creative Director of Buster + Punch.

2. Build a bookcase in an empty alcove

Whether it's a carefully curated shelf or a full-on bookcase, your reading nook needs a dedicated spot to store your books and an unused living room alcove is one of the best places for it.

Built-in solutions look sleek and seamless, but if your budget doesn’t allow, there are plenty of gorgeous standalone options available, like the green shelved cabinet shown in the photo above.

Interior designer Katie Malik recommends organising your books by colour or alphabetically, and painting your shelves in a contrasting shade to your walls to add a playful touch.

3. Choose a comfortable seating set up

It wouldn't be a reading nook without a comfortable place to sit, so make sure you choose one that feels right for you. Whether it's a soothing rocking chair or a supportive armchair, pick one that suits your needs and body, layering it with soft blankets and cushions for extra relaxation.

"Almost everyone likes to have their feet up when they’re reading, so having somewhere to rest them is another consideration. Having a footstool, ottoman or pouffe nearby would be ideal," says Melissa Denham.

4. Combine a home bar with your reading nook

If your ideal night in involves a good book and a glass of wine, why not add a home bar to your reading nook? Even if you don’t have space for a dedicated cabinet, a drinks trolley works perfectly and saves you from constantly getting up and down.

Whether it becomes a decorative feature in your living room or is tucked away in a corner when not in use, these little carts are versatile in any home. As a bonus, they also provide a handy spot to rest your book.

5. Make use of natural light for reading

If you're on the fence about where to locate your reading nook, we recommend placing it near a window so you have plenty of natural light beaming in.

According to Melissa Denham, natural lighting has been shown to be the healthiest and most relaxing way to read, so it makes sense to make the most of it in your reading nook.

Natural light reduces eye strain and improves reading comfort, which will help to make your reading nook experience even more enjoyable.

The best thing about reading nooks is that they work well in any size home all it takes is a comfortable chair, good lighting, and, of course, your favourite book.
