If you're in a relentless battle against the moss on your driveway and patio and can't seem to shift it, this expert guide will help you every step of the way – from the quickest way to kill it to how to prevent it from coming back.

Not only does moss look unsightly, but it can also loosen your paving, cause freeze-thaw damage in winter, and pose a potential slip hazard when it’s wet. As you’re probably aware, moss grows very quickly – particularly in the spring and autumn when the weather is mild and damp, making this the best time to tackle it.

To find out the fastest way to remove, kill, and prevent moss on your driveway and patio, we spoke with garden, landscaping, and driveway experts to hear their top tips learned over the years. While you're here, you may also want to learn how to kill moss in lawns.

What kills moss on driveways and patios?

The best way to remove moss from hard surfaces is by using a dedicated moss killer, advises Daniel Wickham, owner of First Impression Driveways. You'll need to make sure it's appropriate for your driveway material, and if you're unsure, he recommends checking with your local garden centre (but most brands will label this clearly on the bottle).

Alternatively, Daniel suggests mixing water with diluted household bleach (one part bleach to ten parts water). Rub the mixture on the surface, wait 15 to 20 minutes, scrub with a stiff brush, and rinse thoroughly with water. Just ensure you wear gloves and protective glasses.

However, while it might be tempting to jump straight to killing moss, Laura Bradbury, Head of eCommerce at VonHaus, recommends removing it first – which she explains in the next section.

How do you remove moss on driveways and patios?

"The most effective first step is removing the moss physically. For small patches, a stiff outdoor brush can work well, but tools designed for hard surfaces can make the job much easier," says Laura Bradbury.

One tool she recommends is an electric weed sweeper, which has a rotating brush designed to pick up moss, weeds and debris from paving joints and textured surfaces. A dedicated weed tool also works well for removing moss from the cracks between slabs and block paving – before the need for chemicals.

"Once the moss has been cleared, rinsing the surface and allowing it to dry properly helps prevent it from quickly returning," Laura adds.

How do you prevent moss on driveways and patios?

Removal is all well and good, but prevention is what will stop moss in its slippery tracks. Here's how you can achieve it:

1. Keep your driveway and patio dry
Moss thrives in damp conditions, and while you can't control the weather, you can ensure your driveway or patio is free from leaves, soil, and grass.

Laura Bradbury explains that debris can trap moisture against the surface, giving moss the perfect environment to grow. The solution could be as simple as regular sweeping or using a leaf blower to keep things dry. You should also ensure you have a good drainage system, adds Daniel Wickham.

2. Keep paving joints clear
"It also helps to keep paving joints clear, as moss and weeds often begin growing between slabs or block paving. Occasional maintenance with a weed sweeper or weed removal tool can stop small patches from spreading across the surface," says Laura.

3. Manage moss in grass
Moss can quickly spread from the edge of your lawn onto your driveway or patio, which is why seasonal lawn care is crucial.

Moss can be tricky to keep on top of, but by following these expert removal and prevention tips, it will become much easier.
