A self-build eco home
For this large self-build, built to near Passivhaus standards, MB Architecture started with a meeting to discuss the client’s requirements and budget. The client had bought a dilapidated property on a large plot in a good road, which is always a great starting point for a project like this.
Initial discussions focussed around extending, remodelling, and renovating the existing house, but the existing property was in a very poor state and the lack of foundations had caused the house to move over time. The client was also keen to create a property that would be close to net zero in terms of energy bills.
The company worked on a set of proposals to create a brand-new dwelling on the plot, in an optimal position, creating the exact space that the client desired.
The plans focussed on the key spaces the client had on their wishlist, including kitchen, dining, living, study, utility, bedroom and bathroom spaces.
Maximising natural light was also very important for the client, so the proposed design incorporated lots of glazing while also providing shading to ensure overheating would not become an issue.
MB Architecture prepared the package for planning submission and the scheme was granted planning permission. The result will be a stunning family home, which is due to be completed in February 2026.
Innovative remodel
Situated on greenbelt land, this 1960s property had already been extended, although this later addition had very little architectural merit.
The client required more space for their growing family, and had purchased the building because of the secluded plot setting on the edge of a desirable village.
After listening closely to the client’s wishlist, their likes and dislikes, and their budget, MB Architecture prepared a set of design options for their consideration.
A large part of the existing building was retained and upgraded, and both ground and first floors were extended and remodelled to create a stunning contemporary home for the family. The building was completely reimagined by creating symmetry, proposing different materials and remodelling the internal layout.
The design gained planning permission approval and then the company also prepared the Building Regulations package, including structural design.
The project was completed in 2024 to a very high standard and the clients are delighted with the result.
