Chrome is in – so is brass out? We asked interior design experts
Before you swap your brass fittings for chrome, you'll want to hear what the experts have to say
After years of warm metals dominating interior trends, chrome has officially made its comeback – and this autumn, you can expect to see it everywhere, from hardware fixtures in bathroom designs to statement accessories in living areas.
“Steel and chrome are making a confident return," confirms Massimo Buster Minale, Founder and Creative Director of Buster + Punch. "They bring a refined, modern edge with a nod to ’90s minimalism and the raw appeal of industrial design."
So, if cool-toned metals are back in style, does this mean that brass is finally out? We chatted with interior experts to hear their thoughts – plus their top tips for styling 2025's most fashionable finish.
How to style chrome fixtures
It's easy to achieve a sleek, polished look when you're working with chrome, and, thanks to its reflective nature, it can even help to brighten up your space and make it appear larger than it really is – particularly when combined with these modern lighting ideas.
Pretty and practical, this durable finish is also long-lasting, making it a sensible option as well as an attractive one. Here's how to style chrome fixtures in your home, according to Massimo Buster Minale:
In kitchens: "Pair solid stainless-steel taps, handles and sockets with darker cabinetry or stone for a strong, contemporary contrast."
In bathrooms: "Polished fittings against matt tiles or natural stone create a clean, elevated look with an industrial edge."

In living spaces: "Use steel lighting, switches or furniture detailing as subtle highlights against rich materials like wood, leather or velvet. The key is balanced, sleek, precision-engineered metal grounded by warmth and texture. A crisp, timeless finish that will remain lustrous, built to look as good decades from now as it does today.”

Is brass out of style?
Just because chrome is back in fashion, does that mean brass is officially uncool? Before you update your entire home furnishings, it's worth hearing what interior designer Katie Malik has to say.
"There’s definitely been a resurgence of chrome and silver tones recently, which is interesting considering the wider shift towards earthy, grounded interiors. Chrome offers a sleek, contemporary edge, but it can sometimes feel colder or more industrial. Nickel, on the other hand, is a softer alternative – warmer than chrome but still more understated than brass.
"That said, I still believe brass remains the most timeless and versatile choice. It works equally well in a classic country kitchen as it does in a modern bathroom. It complements natural materials like stone and timber beautifully, and it sits comfortably within both traditional and contemporary design schemes.
"In my view, brass and bronze have an enduring quality that transcends trends. They’re finishes that will always evolve with the home – never static, never sterile. Chrome might have its moment, but brass will always feel authentic, elegant and here to stay."

Katie Malik is the founder and creative director of Katie Malik Design Studio, based in Cambridge. She originally studied at Cambridge University as a linguist, then retrained in Interior Design at Chelsea College of Art in London and the National Design Academy. Katie launched her own business in 2014 after gaining previous experience at high-end London design studios.
While chrome is having its time in the spotlight, after speaking with Katie Malik, it’s clear that brass isn’t going anywhere. It might not be the metal of the moment, but it remains a timeless classic that works well in most schemes.
