A new residential build project situated in the Black Isle, Ross-shire has been designed and constructed to equal or better than Passivhaus Standards with Hemsec SIPs acting as the main structure.

Structural Insulated Panels are easily integrated with a wide range of construction materials, as a load or non-load bearing structure; to provide a built up, through wall panel system.

Hemsec SIPs are able to resist the high wind loadings in the North of Scotland with ease due to their high racking strength and are regularly chosen as the product of choice on Eco-friendly new builds.

One company reaping the benefits of SIPs are Thermopassive an architect owned company based in the North of Scotland specialising in extremely highly insulated buildings.

Thermopassive not only engineered the SIPs panels for this project, but supplied and installed over 200m2 of 180mm thick panels with 15mm OSB/3 facings. A rapid assembly time for the panels to a wind and watertight shell allowed work to be continued inside during spells of bad weather which is a frequent occurrence, proving a major advantage over more traditional building methods.

SIPs contribute to thermal and air tightness requirements by minimising joints and providing continuous insulation. This was then combined with an additional cold bridging layer of 25mm PIR insulation board behind the internal plasterboard linings also incorporating service voids, creating insulation levels in excess of passive house standards with high inherent air-tightness levels (potentially to 0.3 air changes, twice as good as passive requirements when following careful design practices). The very happy customer has already reported minimal heating costs!

Iain Macbeath, Managing Director at Thermopassive commented that “We are extremely proud that the design of our houses is able to reach or surpass the best Passivhaus certified dwellings with regard to air-tightness and insulation”.

With no constraints or limitations imposed by the use of trussed rafters, the first floor ceilings were vaulted up to the ridge, creating a more open and aesthetically pleasing living space by utilising the spanning capabilities and strength characteristics of the SIPs roof panels.

The property is finished in a smooth white render to the external blockwork complemented by stained larch and high performance Aluclad Scandinavian triple glazed timber windows.

Hemsec SIPS manufacture BBA Approved light weight, polyurethane (PUR) foam injected, factory engineered Structural Insulated Panels that have been extensively tested for Structural, Acoustic and Thermal properties including Fire Resistance performance.
