Regular readers of the magazine and this site will probably not be too surprised to hear that I’m a big fan, in general, of American homes. I particularly love Colonial and Shaker styles – so a trip last week to New England proved a great chance to get some inspiration for my next self-build project. I can’t quite imagine the reaction of the planners to wanting to build something that isn’t Georgian or contemporary, but at this stage I don’t care. There is something about their proportions, big windows and elegant, wholesome style that I just love. Luckily my wife Sarah feels the same.
So, if you’re with me on this style, then you’ll take almost as much pleasure from this image as the Ormes did, captured from the road between Stowe and Waterbury in beautiful Vermont. I accept that it’s helped by the snow and the ample bit of land around it, but isn’t it just homely perfection?
