Further away and you get more privacy and a proper sense of escape, at the cost of longer utility runs and a less convenient changing routine.

Boundary distance is worth checking early too, since it shapes both your layout and whether you need planning permission.

These rules vary by local authority and by what's already been built on a plot, since previous extensions or alterations to the property can affect what you're allowed to build next, so it's worth checking with your council before committing to a design.

Building regulations

Building regulations are a separate matter to planning permission and are assessed independently, so you might need approval for one, both or neither.

Many pool houses actually turn out to be exempt from full building control, since small detached buildings under 30m² with no sleeping accommodation are generally exempt, provided they sit at least a metre from the boundary or are built from non-combustible materials. Utilities and services

Getting power to a pool house

Power usually runs from the main house via armoured cable, either buried underground or clipped along a fence line, into its own dedicated consumer unit rather than an extension of an existing circuit. This falls under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work must be carried out or signed off by a qualified, registered electrician, whatever else you take on yourself.

"It's also become more noticeable in recent years at events like the Hampton Court Flower Show," she notes, "with products such as stock tanks being used to create more natural outdoor plunge pools or cold dip tubs. It all ties in with the need for more eco-friendly homes that also embrace wellness."

Worried that in buying something that's normally reserved for industrial purposes you might actually be buying a shipping container that's no longer fit for purpose? Jakub assures us: "they’re one trip containers, meaning they have been used to transport goods once," a fact corroborated by a number of other supplier websites too.

• Above or below ground: Container pools are designed primarily for above-ground installation, but they can be partially or fully recessed depending on your landscaping and aesthetic preferences. Above-ground setups often require less site prep and offer a striking modern look. They require a stable, level base, typically concrete pads or reinforced compacted ground
• Power and water: Pools need a power supply, but there is no requirement for constant water supply, as once filled the pools recirculate the water through a filter
• Location: Where will your pool go? There's no reason why it can't be used indoors, but you'll still need to consider the size of the completed unit and how it can be delivered. While containers can be craned in, this will naturally add to the overall expense so think carefully about where it will be best positioned
• Cover: Have a think about the type of cover you'll want. Options include thermal foils, manual safety covers, and fully automated retractable systems that can be tailored to suit the size and final design

"They are also really efficient when it comes to water heating as all our pools use modern heat pumps, are well insulated and feature energy saving pool covers."

Pros and cons

So, as well as the fact they are perhaps a surprisingly sustainable option in your garden design plans and a more cost-effective solution, what are the other pros and cons of opting for a shipping container swimming pool?

Time is likely to be an appealing option for many homeowners says Jakub Strzyzewski.

"The key benefit is that unlike in-ground pools that can take weeks or months, container pools can be delivered, craned into position, and operational within a day."

High on some people's list will also be the lack of 'dirty work' involved in an above ground option – particularly if you've already lived through a long and messy home renovation.

Even though above ground pools will need a stable base, and you'll need to run power to the area if it's not already close by, there's no need for the major excavation normally involved in installing a below ground pool.

"They’re also relocatable," adds Jakub, "meaning they can be craned out and relocated if you ever move. They can also be placed in tough to get locations – we've even installed them on rooftops!

"Lastly, as already noted, they also generally cost less than a cost of building an in-ground pool, but still feature exactly the same premium equipment that’s usually found in traditional pools."

On the flip side...

But what about the negatives? Access may prove to be too difficult for some, and the overall style may not suit all types of garden design. Likewise, there are some limitations to how creative you can be given you're working with a basic rectangular shape. And, if you get carried away with how bespoke you make your shipping container swimming pool, you could potentially find yourself spending the same as a normal swimming pool.

One can't help but also worry about the risks of rust, particularly with a saltwater pool, although most manufacturers say that with the correct rust protection and regular maintenance, shipping container pools generally have a good life span.

"In theory, you can go as small as you like," explains Andy Carr, Group COO & Managing Director at Guncast. "Typically, an average recreational pool is usually around 8 x 4m. If clients are looking for a training pool they tend to go longer and thinner - often 15/20m in length," says Andy.

"Ultimately it comes down to how big your space is and what size best suits your needs. It's possible to design and build a pool of any size and specification. Lap pools are also an option for small gardens – and we have seen an increased demand for these in recent years. The lap pool is a long, narrow design which can look more elegant than a traditional, wider pool," says Andy.

3. Use decking as a swimming pool surround

Decking can be used around a pool area for a naturally softer look and feel underfoot. However, wood and water can be a tricky mix.

"Consider using garden decking around the pool rather than stone, but be mindful to use hardwood with a high resin content that will not be slippery. Alternatively, you could look at using a composite," says Fi Boyle.

Composite decking won't rot in the same way the natural wood will, be sure to use joists and a sub-base which will have equal longevity too.

4. Hide unsightly pool covers from view

Here is where the reality of UK living kicks in. "If your pool is close to the house, it is important to consider that the pool will be covered for most of the year (possibly any time it’s not in use, for safety)," says landscape designer Marlene Lento.

"Pool covers are large and can be a real eyesore, so it is important to consider this in the placement of your pool landscaping ideas and planting in particular. A substantial raised bed or evergreen planting between the house and the pool provides screening and a pleasant outlook from the house as well as from the pool area," says Marlene.

Remember that permanent structures built directly overhead may require you to have swimming pool planning permission.

5. Factor in practical landscaping elements

It's easy to want to ignore the less glamorous aspects of pool landscape ideas such as pool heat pumps, equipment and storage. But failure to properly account for these elements could really bring down your overall design.

"Make sure you have a big enough pump room or cupboard, which also provides a storage place for chemicals and cleaning supplies. Speak to your contractor early on about the location for ground source heat pumps, as the location options for the units is restricted and you don’t want to find yourself looking at it from the kitchen window or your lovely new pool or deck," says Marlene Lento.

6. Add lush planting around your pool area

One way to really make your pool feel at home in a landscape is by incorporating generous patio planting.

"Whether in the ground or in large planters - be bold! Some well-clipped evergreen clear stem or multi-stem trees add structure, and you can fragrant plants close to seating or lounging areas," says Marlene.

"Evergreens and grasses are the least messy (although there is always maintenance). Avoid shrubs with berries, or be sure to prune them after flowering to stop them from developing. The same goes for plants with sharp seedheads. You may also want to steer clear of flowers which appeal to bees and wasps," says Marlene.

7. Put in a shaded area next to the pool

If your pool area is very sunny, consider adding a garden sunshade idea such as a pergola or gazebo, these can be traditional or modern, depending on the style of your garden and adjacent house advises Marlene.

"A vine-covered pergola is magical as a lunch spot or for lounging, and it softens what is traditionally an area with lots of hard surfaces. Parasol-shaped trees can make a beautiful natural ‘pergola’," says Marlene.

8. Consider your lighting for nighttime ambience

"Even a couple of lights inside a pool make the body of water glow like magic," says Marlene. If you don't have lights within your pool, it's still possible to create the impression of this using garden lighting.

"For the surrounding area, highlight structural elements such as specimen trees or pergolas. If some of these are close enough to the pool and you don’t have lights within the pool (or they’re off), you can get the illuminated feature’s reflection in the pool."

"It’s essential to check angles of reflection from the area where you’re most likely to view this, such as from your patio doors. Festoon lighting is cheap and cheerful and looks great draped along a garden fence, or over pergolas surrounding pool areas," says Marlene.

9. Make a pool boundary into a feature

Things like pool boundaries can be essential safety elements if you have pets or children, in order to prevent accidents. Rather than these being considered at a later date, Fi Boyle suggests making them part of your design.

"If you fence your pool area, don’t make the enclosure an afterthought- make it a feature. Plant a hedge or make it a beautifully detailed wall and pay attention to the gate - these details make a huge difference," says Fi.

10. Consider a natural pool for wild look

"The most usual shape for a pool is rectangular and the reason for this is practicality, both in the construction of the pool but also because most pools need a cover to keep warmth in," says Fi Boyle.

Fi reasons that a pool could be any shape you want but by going away from the norm you will add to the cost of building it.

"It also depends on if you are building a traditional pool or a natural swimming pool. If you want a more natural and wild look to a pool then a natural swimming pool is definitely the way to go."

11. Be creative with paving around pools

"Rather than just running a 3m or so strip of garden paving all around, use only as much paving as you need and add more planting," advises Marlene Lento.

"Create little niches surrounded by planting in sun traps bordering the pool where you can place your sun beds. Choose the colour of your pool finish wisely, as you’ll live with that blue or turquoise for a long time. How brilliant or how subtle that colour should be considered within the style and palette of the garden," says Marlene.

"It's important to create a pool that feels a natural part of a space, rather than overwhelming the home or garden. We find a lot of clients push landscaping to the bottom of the list, but it’s something that needs to be included and considered from day one," says Andy.

Where the pool is positioned in relation to the rest of the space is also key. "Consider where the steps should be, what materials will work around the poolside, as well as practical elements such as the necessary drainage, pipework and plant room," says Andy.

"Some clients want their pools sitting right outside the house for ease of use and an extension of the home, so this could result in a design that ties in very specifically with the architecture of the home and grounds. Others prefer an oasis at the end of the garden, so this would need to take a very different approach that is completely unrelated to the home."

With UK summer temperatures sometimes surpassing that of Mediterranean climates, it makes sense that UK homeowners are curious about swimming pool costs.

Because of our climate, and the fact that pools are less popular here than abroad, the current UK swimming pool market doesn't achieve the same economic scale as those on the continent in terms of installation costs. Then there is the need for heating your pool, so energy costs need to be factored in, as well as ongoing maintenance.

Swimming pool costs: Installation, maintenance and energy

The cost of installing a swimming pool will depend on several factors but the two biggest elements which will influence costs are the size of the pool and the material that it’s made from.

How much does a swimming pool cost to install

"Costs will vary depending on the swimming pool type you want to install. At the higher end of the market, a retailer such as Origin Pools will install an in-ground outdoor pool from around £96,950 for a small pool (8m x 4m) up to £187,000 for a 15m x 6m pool," says Jason Orme, former Editor of Homebuilding & Renovating.

"This includes installation and an air source heat pump for use between May and September, but doesn't include the cost to take soil away or services. For those on a tighter budget, sliding dome covers offer the best of both worlds giving you an indoor pool that can be turned into an outdoor pool just like a convertible car."

Varying costs can be found below:

• Above ground pools: "These will cost less to install than an in-ground one, as there will be less groundwork necessary," explains energy expert David Hilton. "For smaller swimming pool ideas of around 4m x 2.5m you will be looking at around £6,000. Therefore (on the budget end of the scale) you could realistically have a pool installed with a counter flor pump and a fully insulated safety cover with change from £9,000".
• In-ground pools: If paying a professional to install, you'll need to consider the costs of excavation, soil away, building materials such as concrete and blockwork, and any specialist labour such as screeding. Costs of the labour will depend on where you are in the country but Dave Horne of Origin Pools estimates the cost to take soil away as between £5,000 and £8,000 including VAT. Most professional installations on a typical 11m x 4m pool, which includes all groundworks and materials with a good selection of renewable energy options, a good warranty and safety cover start from £50,000 with the average being around £80,000.
• Customised kits: At the lower end of the outdoor pool market, a customised in-ground liner kit installed by a professional starts at £25,000 and a mosaic-tiled concrete pool costs from around £45,000.
• Indoor pools: When it comes to indoor pools, prices vary greatly, from around £60,000 to £150,000 all-in (to include an environmental control system or air handling unit such as a dehumidifier), depending on the chosen pool. When budgeting for an indoor pool you also have to consider the cost of the building itself, very similar in cost to an extension. Typical costs range from £1,000/m² upward depending on the quality of the finishes and spec. Origin Pools offers indoor swimming pools including the building for guide prices of between £250,000-£414,250.
• Natural swimming pools: Prices for natural swimming pools are better measured per m2, as the cost decreases as the size does. This will range between £300 to £600/m2.

Swimming pool maintenance costs

As an estimate, annual running costs can be anywhere from a couple of hundred pounds for an above-ground pool to £3,000-£4,000 for a larger in-ground pool.

Unless you are happy to swim in cold water, the majority of your costs will go towards heating your swimming pool. To try and keep those costs as low as possible, it's worth investing in a good pool cover so you can retain as much heat in the pool.

Keeping up with regular maintenance is also more cost-effective than leaving your pool untouched over winter and then having to do a large amount of work to clean it and make sure the water quality is adequate before swimming in it again.

Swimming pool heating costs

According to The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA), there are various options for heating indoor and outdoor pools, each with its own merits. 'Choosing the right type of heating will maximise your chances of having the most suitable energy-efficient system, which will help you save money,' says SPATA.

They advise that the most popular options include: heat pumps (both air source and ground source), gas and oil boilers, direct resistance electric heating and solar heating. "Using a heat pump as a form of swimming pool heating is growing in popularity due to its ease of installation, low operating cost, and low carbon generation," says SPATA. "Electric resistance heaters are compact devices permanently installed within a plant room. They provide the cheapest capital for installing dynamic heating, but running costs are among the highest available heat sources."

How to save money on your swimming pool

Garden design expert, Marlene Lento, is experienced in designing pool and spa areas for UK gardens and landscapes. She shares her tips on the most economical way to design a pool.

• Partially above-ground pools are more economical than inground pools as they involve less excavation and spoil removal. This also goes for pools built into a slope where only one part of the pool is recessed into the ground, although this does depend on the terrain that needs to be retained and drainage requirements.
• Prefabricated shells that can get you from lawn to pool within a few days are the most predictable and the least headache, and can be great value.
• If it’s a bespoke pool, rectangular is the most economical size, and the closer to a square you are, the fewer linear metres of wall you need to build and line which impacts cost. Pool depth impacts the price for the same reason.
• If you have a large enough property to accommodate the excavated spoil, this will save the cost of removal, although this needs to be planned and landscaped with foresight.
• Freestanding covers are the most economical but do consider the aesthetics.
• Copings can be expensive so see what’s most economical that isn’t bespoke and make sure you coordinate your pool area paving so you don’t end up with a ‘not-quite-matched’ look, or a contrasting picture frame around the pool that doesn’t relate to anything else in your material palette.
• Pools with liners are the most economical, and pools tiled with large format tiles are the most expensive.

Does a swimming pool add value UK?

Be aware that pools may not necessarily add value to your home as chartered surveyor Francesca Watson, co-founder of Otters Home Search tells us.

In her experience, this is mainly due to safety, cost and the environmental impact of heating them. "As a vendor – I’d say, please don’t expect it to add value to a property. As a buyer, I’d advise that you always ask for all maintenance history," says Francesca.

Building a swimming pool could well be a consideration when you're self-building, extending or simple relandscaping your garden. They're a marvellous addition that more and more homeowners are looking to add to their properties as the UK experiences more extreme weather in summer.

Building a swimming pool: Is it worth it? 

Swimming pools to many in the UK are the ultimate sign of luxury and an embrace of the outdoors. Unlike the US or Australia where pools are commonly seen in their sunnier climes, the UK has generally been regarded as too grey and wet for them to be a realistic consideration that justifies the cost of installation.

However, with the recent boom in wild and outdoor swimming in our chilly waters, in addition to our balmier summers, many homeowners are looking to install swimming pools of all shapes and sizes. 

"They’re a great choice if you’re health conscious - there’s no beating swimming in crystal clear, chemical free water," explains Sarah Mulch, director of Ellicar Gardens, "If you’re an all-season swimmer, as a lot of our clients are, you can tap into the proven health benefits of cold-water swimming too."

"With regards to planning permission for swimming pools you should always check with the local authority but in general, unless you are in an AONB, have a listed building and are building within the curtilage of the house behind the front elevation they do not require planning permission," says Alex Kemsley, technical director at Compass Pools. 

Choosing the wrong size and shape for a pool

An appropriate ratio between landscaping, hardscaping and pool space is essential for a successful design. 

Making the pool too big and sacrificing valuable patio space means that you won't be able to dine out or enjoy the sun comfortably without the pool being a focus. Too little greenery and garden and the space in it's entirety will look barren and unnatural. 

Even the smallest pools can be worth the effort, and with exercise swimming pools, sometimes called endless pools (essentially a treadmill for swimming using a current) becoming more affordable.

Picking the wrong location for a pool

"It's important to locate a natural swimming pool to work with nature instead of against it! For instance, it is not advisable to place a pool too close to deciduous trees, as the leaf fall in autumn can cause huge issues if they clog the filter and burden the water with unwanted nutrients which causes an imbalance leading to algae," explains Sarah Mulch of Ellicar Gardens. "It's also key to locate the pool somewhere it will get plenty of sun so it warms up nicely! Another key location factor is to never place a natural pool at the bottom of a sloped site, or anywhere it is at risk of being contaminated with surface water runoff, as this can hugely impact the water balance."

"In terms of location, ideally close to the house so you have changing, toilets and a kitchen nearby unless you are going to invest in a full pool house with these in them as well," adds Alex Kemsley. "You should avoid under tree canopy and at least 2m from the boundary or any buildings from a structural aspect."

Not anticipating more temperate weather

Although we tend to think of pools as being used predominantly in the summer, heating a swimming pool provides the opportunity for year round enjoyment. This can be a sticking point for many looking at installing a pool, and one that many homeowners regret not including after the build is complete.

Outdoor heated pools can be powered using heat pumps for swimming pools or other low-carbon methods, making them a serious consideration in today's climate, but carefully think about how and when you will use the pool and if these added expenses are worth the extra costs.

Underestimating swimming pool maintenance costs

Heated or not, natural or chemical, people are often caught out by the day-to-day and year-on-year maintenance requirements and costs for the different swimming pool types. 

"Running costs vary hugely by pool type, size, usage etc. On an average family pool with the eco options ticked would be somewhere between £5 and £15 per day heated to 28 degrees May to September," adds Alex Kemsley.  

Forgetting the extra wow-factors for a well-designed pool

Our final common swimming pool mistake is forgetting to include the extras that take a pool from functional to worth every penny spent. Different swimming pool ideas will be applicable depending on your lifestyle and who will be using the pool, but these added details make the final result extra special. 

Potential additions could be lighting for a night-time dip, a jacuzzi section for relaxation after exercise, or a fun swim-up bar. Just as with any homebuilding project, you must make it your and suited to how you like to live and what you consider special. 

The Captain Tom pool house that was built by the family of the beloved former army officer and fundraiser, has now been demolished after a long planning battle.

Hannah Ingram-Moore, 53, the daughter of Captain Tom, was initially given planning permission to build the outbuilding next to Captain Tom's former home, The Old Rectory, in Bedford, before being ordered to submit a retrospective application due to not meeting the initial plans or designs.

Central Bedfordshire council then rejected the new plans and the family's appeal forcing them to tear down the pool house, which has now been completed.

What was built at the property?

The initial proposal for the site aimed to replace the tennis court in the southwest grounds with a single-story detached building.

This building was designed with an L-shaped floor plan, featuring a traditional flat roof. It was intended for various purposes, including private domestic use, interviews, and charity functions. 

However, instead of proceeding with the original plans, the family of Captain Tom Moore, Ms. Ingram-Moore, and her husband, Colin, constructed a pool house on the site.

The couple had to seek retrospective planning permission for the pool house, which had a C-shaped floor plan that was 21 meters long and 15 meters wide with a 3-meter high ceiling and a traditional pitched roof.

Why were the retrospective plans rejected?

As the Captain Tom pool house was built near the main home, which was a listed building, the council ruled it would cause unacceptable harm to the Grade-II listed property.

Central Bedfordshire council rejected the retrospective plans as they stated: "The proposed outbuilding, would result in unacceptable harm by virtue of size, design and siting within the curtilage of a Listed Building and would lead to an overdevelopment of the site comprising an unsympathetic and dominating structure that fails to represent the informal open character of the site and lacks the due subservience."

The retrospective planning permission was refused and a demolition notice was issued last year for the building referred to as the "Captain Tom Building” in the Planning Officer's report.

What caused the planning battle?

Captain Tom's family initially rejected the council's assessment and appealed against the council's decision.

The Heritage Statement submitted by the family stated that although the new plans "introduced a degree of change" they believed these were mitigated "through the use of sensitively considered materials, design, and where possible by planting trees between the site and principal building". 

The council rejected this appeal in October 2023 meaning the family were given until February 8 to remove the pool house and restore the land to its original state, which has now been done.

Ms Ingram Moore eventually stated last year that she regretted building the pool house in an interview with Piers Morgan where she said: “We have to accept that we made a decision, and it was probably the wrong one.”

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber has been given permission to build a pool house at his his home in Hampshire.

Famous composer, Lord Webber, 75, purchased Sydmonton Court in 1978 where he lives with his wife, former equestrian sportswoman Madeleine Gurdon, 60.

Basingstoke Council granted planning permission at the 5000-acre estate, despite the home being surrounded by the famous Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) of Watership Down, as it was claimed the pool house "would not cause harm to the setting of neighbouring heritage assets".

Pool house design includes a living green roof

The new pool house will replace the existing dilapidated summer house at the property.

The Council’s Historic Environment Team commented on the current outbuilding: "Although the building is maintained, it is in poor condition and whilst it is a shame to lose the structure which has interest and arguably reflects the ownership, thus contributing to the (future) significance of the assets, the removal is not objected to."

Basingstoke Council granted permission to remove a timber pavilion next to the composer's outdoor pool and tennis court and install a new outbuilding that will include a kitchen, dining area, and changing rooms.

The proposed pool house will include a living green roof for plants and wildlife, measuring 60ftx15ft, and will also include a metal fascia board (board that runs along the edge of the roof).

The Historic Environment Team stated the new design is "unabashed contemporary" which "allows for a number of sustainable construction features" and for "greater on-going performance". The pool house will also use triple glazed windows and underfloor heating.

Pool house to be 'sensitive' to the local landscape

The planning documents showed there were no objections to the plans by residents, the arboricultural report, the urban design and conservation team, the parish council, or the county archaeologist, as well as being endorsed by the Council's Historic Environment Team.

According to documents submitted to Basingstoke Council, it was claimed that: "The pavilion (pool house), like the existing building, would continue to be used for purposes incidental to the occupation of Sydmonton Court. 

"The proposed replacement building is highly contained within the grounds of the estate and does not introduce a new use or activity to the site.

"By reason of its modest sitting, unobtrusive design and discreet location, the proposed replacement building, it is submitted that the development has responded appropriately and sensitively to its context and would not cause harm to the setting of neighbouring heritage assets or to the character of the local landscape or scenic quality of the AONB."

Lord Webber has also made a number of improvements to the home after installing successfully a new conservatory, restoring some old horse stables and removing a dam on the estate.

Historic 5,000-acre estate played host to VIP stars

Sydmonton Court has a significant history in a world famous area and has played host to royalty and celebrities alike. 

Constructed during the 16th century, the residence holds Grade II listing status. Spanning across a 5,000-acre expanse, the estate comprises paddocks, fishponds, a polo field, a granary, dovecote, stable block, barns, carthouse, and gardens that are registered with the Hampshire Garden Trust.

The historic home is located near the famous conservation area and AONB of, North Wessex Downs, also known as Watership Down, which is best known as the setting for Richard Adams' 1972 novel, also called Watership Down.

The unique architecture of the house led it to be described by Pevsner, an art historian, as "the sort of English Architectural mongrel you want to rescue and love for the rest of your life."

Lord Webber's home was previously owned by the Kingsmill family for 400 years who were given it by Henry VIII in the 1530s. Recent royalty has also visited the property with Webber revealing the Queen visited him on the estate.

Sydmonton Court has also hosted an exclusive arts festival where Lord Webber's most famous shows were performed such as Cats, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera and Starlight Express, and VIP guests were invited for the private performance.

Boris Johnson has said he will be "delighted" to live with newts, in response to news that the amphibians could block his plans to install a swimming pool.

The species, which Boris Johnson had previously fought to remove protection rights from, are now scuppering his plans to install a pool on his 17th century, £3.8 million, Oxfordshire home, as the planned site falls within the "highest zone of risk" of great crested newts, which is a protected species.

The South Oxfordshire District Council countryside officer has raised a holding objection to the plans claiming Johnson's plans could endanger the local population of newts, which meant Johnson could not gain planning permission.

'We will make a Newtopia!' says Johnson

Responding to the news that newts could block Johnson's plans for a new pool Johnson claims he will be "delighted" if newts are found on his property.

In a video posted in the Daily Mail Johnson stated: "It is conceivable that the presence of these newts could delay or even prohibit certain plans that I have, but I want you to know that if there are newts here, there can be no one more delighted than me to cohabit with those threatened amphibians."

Johnson went on to say that he believed: "It is our job to protect them and do everything we can to make sure that they do not suffer the continual decline in population that we have seen in the last 30 years."

In his Daily Mail blog Johnson even claimed he would be willing to create "newt motels" for the creatures and "do whatever it takes to protect them".

Although no newts have yet been found on the site, Johnson claims he would be willing to "build little newt motels to house them in their trips past the swimming pool."

Johnson even declared: "We will excavate new ponds in which they can breed. We will make a Newtopia!"

"In fact, I will go so far as to say this: that if necessary — to protect the newts — I will consecrate the entire swimming pool to these wonderful survivors of the vast defeated armies of Nature"

Contrary to previous anti-newt remarks by Johnson

These comments by Johnson as a far cry from previous statements Johnson has made against the protected species.

Three years ago, during his tenure as the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson criticised the amphibians, holding them responsible for the sluggish pace of new home construction in the UK.

Johnson made a speech in Dudley in June 2020 where he stated: "Newt-counting delays in our system are a massive drag on the productivity and the prosperity of this country and so we will build better and build greener but we will also build faster and that is why the Chancellor and I have set up Project Speed to scythe through red tape and get things done."

Project Speed planned to be “the most radical” changes to planning reforms since the Second World War, but this scheme never started.

The irony of Johnson's remarks will not be lost on him as the newts who he blamed for delaying construction now block his plans to build his pool.

Great crested newts enjoy legal protection under the law. Natural England state it is strictly prohibited to "damage or destroy a breeding or resting place" or to intentionally "capture, kill, disturb, or injure" these creatures. 

This protection was introduced as the population of great crested newts has significantly declined over the last few decades.

Home is possible site of a 12th-century castle

In May of this year, Johnson relocated to a historic 400-year-old Oxfordshire home worth £3.8 million, just eleven months after stepping down as Prime Minister. 

This Grade-II listed, nine-bedroom residence, where he resides with his wife, Carrie, and their three children, boasts its own walled garden, a tennis court, and a three-sided moat.

Recently, he submitted an application through his planning agent, Clearwater Pools, to construct a pool measuring 11 meters by 4 meters (12 yards by 4 yards). The application was officially lodged in June, with a "target" decision date set for August 14.

However, the proposed pool has already faced opposition from the local authority's County Archaeological Services. They expressed concern about the manor's significant archaeological interest as it potentially occupies the site of a 12th-century siege castle and also sits within the Brightwell-cum-Sotw Conservation area.

The authority urged Johnson to implement archaeological monitoring during the construction to ensure the preservation of the historical site.

Boris's planned pool is in 'highest risk zone' for newts

Johnson has been told his planned pool falls within “the red zone of highest risk” of great crested newts, according to the planning report.

Edward Church, a South and Vale Countryside Officer who is in charge of protecting wildlife in the district, said in his report: “There are known populations of great crested newts in the east of the village.

“Mapping shows that there is a pond onsite and a moat immediately adjacent to the southern boundary, both well within 250 metres of the position of the proposed pool.

"Natural England guidance requires that proposals need to demonstrate no risk to GCN or appropriate levels of mitigation and compensation following assessment.

“Based on the information available to me currently, I am of the opinion that there is a reasonable likelihood that GCN are present and could be impacted by the proposed development.”

In 2019, new regulations were introduced to grant developers increased flexibility in addressing the presence of great crested newts, aiming to circumvent potential project delays. 

These rules allow Johnson two options: he can either wait for a newt survey, which might postpone the project by a year, or he can pay to construct a new habitat for the protected species or else his planning permission may be refused.

In an display of creativity and resourcefulness, Alex Dodman, a 37-year-old NHS Ambulance service worker from Saffron Walden, Essex, embarked on a DIY journey to replace a rather ordinary shed with an Alpine-inspired chalet in his garden.

Alex, a keen DIYer, decided to replace an existing underutilised shed, on a limited budget, to create a space his young family could use year-round. A suburban Essex garden would rarely be associated with a pocket-sized ski chalet, but Alex's vision made it possible, with the NHS worker documenting the project for his 126k followers on Instagram.

Chalet-style cabin is now a place to kick back and relax

Initially serving as an underutilised home gym, the previous shed became nothing more than a dumping ground once Alex joined a local gym. In addition to this, Alex claimed the surrounding scenery of tall fir trees made the unsightly shed seem out of place which also prompted the change.

Determined to maximise the space and enhance the garden's aesthetics, Alex spent two and a half months crafting his new garden cabin in the hope he could introduce a taste of the Alps to his garden.

The A-frame garden cabin features insulation and timber-clad walls. Large windows provide ample natural light and offer views of the pool (another DIY project).

Inside, the chalet includes a television – mounted on a hinge bracket meaning it can be moved out of the way when not in use – comfortable sofas and prints. The illuminated porch provides another spot to sit and relax on warmer evenings.

Mastering the A-frame on a budget

Taking on the task with his own hands, Alex crafted all the framework from wood and utilised galvanised metal sheets, measuring four-and-a-half meters, for the roof.

While instructional videos specific to constructing an A-frame shape were scarce, Alex drew inspiration from Instagram photos and adapted his approach accordingly.

Speaking to the Homebuilding & Renovating, Alex claimed the most demanding aspect of the project proved to be constructing the A-frame structure. He found himself investing time in understanding and applying Pythagoras' theorem, seeking assistance from his father to overcome the complexities involved.

With a modest budget of £2,500, Alex sourced materials from suppliers such as B&Q, as well as discovering cost-effective – or free – materials on platforms like Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace to keep costs low. He secured a free front door from the former and purchased three windows from Facebook Marketplace for just £10.

Understanding how to heat a swimming pool in an effective and cost-efficient way is vital if you are to get maximum enjoyment out of your new addition, whether that is a garden pool or an indoor pool.

How to Heat a Swimming Pool: The Most Popular Methods

Just as there are many various swimming pool types, there is not just one method of heating a swimming pool — there are, in fact, several different ways.

“There are various ways to heat an outdoor or indoor pool, each with its own merits," explains Chris Hayes, Managing Director at SPATA (The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association). "Choosing the right type of heating will help to ensure the most suitable energy-efficient system, which can help to save money on the pool running costs.”

The most common methods of heating swimming pools are:

• Heat pumps (air and ground)
• Gas or oil boilers
• Direct resistance heating

In addition, solar heating is now also sometimes specified by those keen to up the eco credentials of their new garden feature. 

Whichever method you end up choosing, there are several steps you can take to ensure your system can work effectively, to keep running costs down and to reduce heat loss in order that your swimming pool ideas are not hampered by excessive heating bills or freezing cold water.

"SPATA recommends that to assist in minimising operating costs, the use of a heat retention cover should ideally be used with whatever heat source you choose, as most of the heat loss from a swimming pool is from surface evaporation," says Chris Hayes. "However, some heat is also lost through the pool shell walls and floor." This is why it's imperative to insulate a new pool shell if starting from scratch. 

"It is also imperative to ensure that heating equipment is only installed by fully qualified and certified/trained professionals," says Chris Hayes.

Can You Use a Heat Pump to Heat a Swimming Pool?

Using heat pumps for swimming pools is a fantastic, low carbon method of warming up the water effectively and efficiently.

There are actually several different types of heat pump that can be used for swimming pool heating, including air source, ground source and those that are specifically designed for pools. 

Swimming pool heat pumps run on electricity, so you could use photovoltaic panels to power them. They are also very efficient — for every 1kWh of electricity used you could expect to get 3-4kWh of heat, and for this reason they tend to have lower running costs than other options.

On the downside, they are slower to heat pool water compared to fossil fuel heaters. "Heat pumps are generally sized to match the average heat loss from a swimming pool, therefore the initial warm up times are likely to be slower than for other forms of heating — warm up periods of less than five days are generally unlikely," explains SPATA.

You will need to ensure the electric supply to your home is sufficient to cover the additional load of the swimming pool heating — and be aware that, if you use an air source heat pump, some can be noisy to run.

"There are air source and ground source versions of heat pumps. Some heat pumps provide heating direct to the pool water, whilst indirect units utilise a heat exchanger," explain the experts at SPATA. 

"The indirect units have the ability to heat other things (like changing room radiators) as part of a multi zone system, but because they would need to run at higher temperatures, they would be less efficient than a purpose-built swimming pool heat pump."

Using a dedicated swimming pool heat pump, as opposed to a standard heat pump, has other benefits too. They have larger heat exchangers that are often made of titanium in order to withstand the chemical content of swimming pool water. These bigger exchangers allow the swimming pool water to flow through much faster as the swimming pool filter pump is running. This high speed water flow results in a much lower temperature rise per cycle and therefore higher efficiency. 

Which Boilers are Suitable for Swimming Pools?

Using a boiler to heat a swimming pool is a very popular method and gas, oil and LPG boilers can all be used.

"They are available as either a purpose built 'direct' type, where swimming pool water passes directly through the boiler, or an 'indirect' type, where a conventional boiler is linked to an additional external heat exchanger," explains SPATA.

Whichever method you opt for, it is important to realise that the section of the heating equipment that will be in contact with the water has to have been designed to withstand swimming pool chemicals as well as the flow rates required. 

"Some boilers, especially the direct type, can be installed outside, but it is generally more common to install boilers in a plant room," say SPATA.

You could consider using the boiler you rely on to heat radiators and your hot water for your house to heat your pool too.

"As an outdoor swimming pool is heated when the load on a house boiler is at a minimum, it is possible to consider using the house boiler to provide swimming pool heating, through a dedicated swimming pool heat exchanger," explains SPATA. 

"The capital cost of such an installation will be determined by the proximity of swimming pool filtration circuits to the house boiler as pipes and electrical control signals will have to be run between the two. It is also important to ensure that the house boiler capacity is reasonably matched to the swimming pool heating requirement."

What is Direct Resistance Heating?

This type of swimming pool heating is the cheapest to install initially, yet has amongst the highest running costs of all the options. 

Electric resistance heaters are small devices that are designed to be installed within a plant room. Despite their high operational costs, they remain popular due to the fact that they are completely silent to run and require very little in the way of maintenance. 

In terms of the initial heat up period, they are comparable to heat pumps.  

"As with other forms of swimming pool heaters, it is important to ensure that the heater is specifically designed for this purpose," explains SPATA. "Due to the relatively high cost of electricity, they would normally be operated on supply tariffs that offer block periods of lower cost electricity. With the high electrical demand from this type of heating, it is essential that an electrical survey is undertaken to ensure that there is sufficient capacity available."

Can Solar Heating be Used For Swimming Pools?

Solar thermal heating can be a brilliant solution for those after a cost-effective and efficient method of heating their pool — however, there are a few points to note.

When using this type of system, heat is collected from a solar collector (such as panels) and transferred to the swimming pool by means of a heat exchanger. There are several different types of system. You could choose a 'mixed system' that combines a solar thermal heating system with a standard swimming pool heater. Or, in some cases, you may be able to have a system where the energy is generated entirely by a solar thermal system.

"A solar thermal heating system that is integrated into a swimming pool can meet up to 80% of your pool’s heating and energy requirements," according to The Renewable Energy Hub. 

They go on to state: "To gain the most efficiency from a solar thermal system the system must ideally be located within 25 meters of the house with the solar thermal system mounted on the roof, building or by the poolside."

"Standard pool solar collectors require a bank of panels that are normally over 50% of the surface area of the pool, depending on the location," explains SPATA. 

"Ideally, the bank should be optimised according to manufacturer’s instructions and are angled towards the sun. It is possible that the distance between the filter pump and the panels may require a booster pump which may have to be taken into consideration when designing and siting such a system."

What is the Best Way to Heat an Indoor Swimming Pool?

Although indoor swimming pools have certain requirements that outdoor pools don't, all of the aforementioned methods can be used to heat them. 

You need to bear in mind that whichever heating system you choose for your indoor pool, it takes into account the air heating requirements of the space.

"Heating of the swimming pool air will help reduce moisture evaporation from the swimming pool and provide a comfortable atmosphere for occupants of the room," explains SPATA. "Swimming pool room heating should be complemented with a form of moisture control, such as a dehumidification system, or a combined heating and dehumidification air handling system."

This is because a degree of moisture from the swimming pool water is likely to evaporate into the room causing high humidity levels that could, in turn, cause condensation.

There is a plethora of swimming pool types out there, all with their own set of pros and cons — so if you have decided to take the plunge and install a home pool you should acquaint yourself with the various options to ensure the style you choose will tick all your boxes. 

With such a huge range of swimming pools for a garden out there to choose from, it can be hard to know where to begin when selecting the right type — this is a big investment and so really requires proper weighing up. 

In order to end up with a home swimming pool that is just what you always dreamed of, take into account the following when making your decision:

• Cost
• Garden size
• Who will be using the pool
• How often the pool will be used
• Where in the garden it will be located
• How you plan on using the pool (exercise, playing, relaxing etc.)

1. Indoor Swimming Pool

Indoor home swimming pools, well designed, can add value to your home and have the added benefit of being useable all year round, no matter what the weather.

Although they can be more expensive to install initially than outdoor pools, indoor swimming pools may be cheaper to run and maintain due there being less heat loss to contend with. 

The majority of people installing an indoor pool will choose to site it in a new outbuilding, or extension built specifically for this purpose — and this is certainly a cheaper and less disruptive option than installing a pool into an existing building or section of the house. 

As with outdoor pools, there are different methods of constructing indoor pools, including prefabricated shells, liner pools and sprayed concrete.

Bear in mind swimming pool planning permission and Building Regs when installing an indoor pool — they are different to those surrounding outdoor pools.  

2. Liner Swimming Pools

Liner swimming pools come in a range of different forms and are a really popular option.

The simplest type of liner pools are made up of a concrete block shell. The hollow blocks are filled with concrete before a liner, usually with a felt backing, is fixed into place. 

Other liner pools consist of shells made up of interlocking plastic or steel panels — it is even possible to buy wooden liner pools, although their lifespan tends to be less. 

Vinyl is the most common liner material — once the blocks or panels are constructed and fitted into the hole, the liner is mounded around it to create a watertight finish. The pool is then boarded with slabs or decking and filled. 

Pros:

• Great budget option with prices starting from £20,000
• Can be designed in any shape or size you require
• Simple and relatively speedy to install

Cons of a liner pool:

• Tend not to have the longevity of one-piece pools
• Liners can tear and are expensive to repair
• Have greater heating requirements than one-piece pools

3. Fibreglass One-Piece Pools

Fibreglass swimming pools are a hugely popular option, simple to install and fairly inexpensive compared to some other types. 

They come as pre-formed shells which can be lowered into the excavated hole in your garden. Designs include all kinds of shapes and sizes and can incorporate steps too. 

Being lightweight and pre-formed, installation is usually a pretty straightforward process that can take as little as a week. However, bear in mind that once in place, the shell will need time to settle into the ground to be filled — several weeks is usual. 

Cost-wise fibreglass pools tend to lie somewhere between liner pools and sprayed concrete pools, starting from around £30,000, including installation.

Pros: 

• Fast installation times
• Low maintenance in the case of gel-coated fibreglass which tends to resist algae build-up
• Smooth surface — no scraped knees or elbows
• Limited choice of shapes and sizes as they are pre-made
• Durable — should last up to 25 years

Cons:

• High shipping costs
• Access needed to bring the shell into your garden
• Watermarks can show on some models
• May be more prone to cracks and other damage than concrete (ground movement can cause this)
• Repair can be tricky

4. Sprayed Concrete Swimming Pools

Sprayed concrete swimming pools are a very popular option in the UK. 

They are made using a frame of steel rods or mesh which is then sprayed with shotcrete or gunite. 

The best bit about these pools is the flexibility they offer in terms of design — they can be built in pretty much any shape, size or configuration you heart desires. They are built on-side, which is handy if you have restricted access and are very durable.

However, they most certainly don't come cheap — prices start from £45,000 right at the lower end but can very easily rise to £150,000.

Pros:

• Completely customisable
• Incredibly strong and long-lasting (up to 70 years)
• Can be lined with a range of materials, such as tiles, plaster, stone or pebble
• Perfect for those with access issues as they are constructed on site
• No joints for leaks etc.

Cons:

• Expensive
• Can be quite high maintenance when it comes to cleaning
• Time consuming to install — factor in the framework construction, spraying of concrete in several layers, setting time and a final finishing of plaster, tiles or swimming pool paint
• Do not retain heat as well as fibreglass or ceramic pools

5. Ceramic Composite Swimming Pools

Ceramic pools are one of the newest types of swimming pool. They come with a whole host of benefits over more traditional swimming pool construction methods

Companies such as Compass Ceramic Pools are now offering ceramic composites that combine ceramic with carbon fibre, which is strong and lightweight. This results in a shell that is incredibly durable and resists cracks due to ground movement well.

Composite ceramic pools are delivered to site pre-formed and can feature UV coatings that prevent fading. 

Cost-wise, they start from £50,000 but can easily go up to £120,000 or more.

Pros:

• Incredibly strong with layers that cope well with ground movement
• Very effective heat insulation properties
• Impermeable to bacteria so less chemicals required in pool maintenance
• Smooth, comfortable finish

Cons:

• Expensive compared to liner pools and fibreglass
• Not fully customisable (although available in a very wide range of shapes and sizes)
• Good access required

6. Natural Swimming Pools

Natural swimming pools rely on natural filtration, as opposed to chemicals, using a range of aquatic plants. 

They are constructed using a liner-style pool fitted with filtration beds and a series of planted shingle pools, which help to remove debris.

Natural living pools are another option. They look more like conventional swimming pools than swimming ponds although they are still chemical-free. They tend to be made up of a series of hidden underground sand filters for cleaning, before the water is pumped back into the pool. 

Pros:

• Low running costs
• Low maintenance
• Slot in beautifully to most garden designs
• Environmentally friendly
• Flexible design options

Cons: 

• Can be expensive to install (expect prices of between £300-£600/m2)
• Some people don't like the idea of swimming with pond wildlife or plants
• Needs specialist installation
• Water may not be crystal clear

7. DIY Swimming Pool Kits

Many people consider whether or not installing a swimming pool on a DIY basis might be a possibility. 

Certainly it can be a cheaper way to get a pool, with prices starting from approx. £5,000 for self built in-ground kits. However, do bear in mind that these costs won't include the equipment required for excavation and might not include extras such as heating and lighting. 

8. Above Ground Swimming Pools

Above ground pools offer an easy, quick-to-install and cost-effective solution to those wanting a home swimming pool. 

Prices start from around £2,500 for a 24ft x 12ft model. They can be set up on a DIY basis (and deconstructed and taken with you should you move.)

Although they may not carry the same luxury feel as in ground pools, above ground pools can be fitted with a range of extras, along with the usual filtration systems. These include lighting and water jets. 

They also offer a little peace of mind for those worried about small children or pets falling into an in ground pool.

Pros:

• Cheaper than other types of pool
• Quick to install (one or two days)
• No excavation required
• Low running costs

Cons:

• Won't increase the value of your home
• More limited design options
• Less aesthetically pleasing
• Tend to be less durable and long-lasting
• Smaller

9. Plunge Pools

Plunge pools are ideal for those with compact gardens, being little bigger than a hot tub. They tend to be fairly deep to allow for total submersion (around a metre is common). 

They are ideal if you want to cool off on a hot day, but won't let you do laps if that is what you are after.

Pros:

• A great small garden design idea
• Great for relaxing in or cooling off
• Available in a range of styles, shapes and sizes
• Quick to install
• Lower running costs than a full-sized pool

Cons:

• No so great for exercising in!

10. Exercise Pools

The most frequently specified style of exercise pools feature high-powered jets at one end for swimmers to swim up against. They are fitted with a pump that can be housed in a plant room or on the outside of the pool.

They are great for those who want a pool to exercise in but who don't have space for a standard swimming pool. 

11. Infinity Pools

The ultimate in luxury, infinity pools appear to flow over an invisible boundary and are something of a staple in many spas and top hotels.

Unlike standard swimming pools, infinity pools feature one or two lower walls that slope away to allow water to overflow out into a channel that catches the water and recirculates it back into the main pool.

While they look stunning, they are not the best option for anyone watching the pennies — according to Compass Ceramic Pools, infinity pools cost around £30,000 more than similar-sized conventional pools.

When it comes to swimming pool planning permission and Building Regs it is really important to understand the various rules that surround their installation and construction. Otherwise your dream pool could become a damp squib.

Just as with any addition that involves altering your home or garden in some way, building control and your local planning department will have their own set of criteria that it will be necessary to comply with in order to ensure your new swimming pool is safe and won't cause you any trouble later down the line. 

Obviously there are various different swimming pool types and the rules and regs will alter depending on which you have opted for.  

Swimming pools for the garden and home are a fairly hefty investment and they take time to construct, which makes it all the more important to ensure that you don't overlook the requirements put in place — you really don't want to have to fill in your beautiful new pool by failing to fall in line with the planning rules and regs.

Swimming Pool Planning Permission and Building Regs Explained

Swimming pools can be beautiful additions and really boost the enjoyment you get from your home — both indoors and out. However, swimming pool ideas don't come cheap, with prices starting from £2,500 for an above-ground pool, rising to between £25,000 and £80,000+ for professionally-installed designs. 

These costs, combined with the considerable amount of work that goes into excavating for and installing a new swimming pool, make it imperative to ensure that you are not breaking any planning laws or Building Regulations criteria — doing so will most certainly add to your costs and could mean your swimming pool is unsafe too. 

We'll explain the rules and regs that relate to the different types of swimming pool available, from above ground pools to indoor pools housed in their own outbuildings. Read on to ensure your watery new addition brings you nothing but pleasure. 

Outdoor Swimming Pool Planning Permission Requirements

The great news for anyone installing an outdoor swimming pool is that planning permission is rarely required — planning authorities generally see this as just another garden project. 

However, there are exceptions and a few points to note. If you live in or on any of the following it is always prudent to check with you local planning department that you won't be breaking any rules by installing a pool:

• Listed building
• Conservation area
• National park
• Greenbelt land
• Designated land

If you plan on constructing an outbuilding in which to house your new pool then planning permission may well apply as this turns it into an indoor pool.

Planning Permission For An Indoor Swimming Pool

Whether or not planning permission will be required for your new indoor pool depends on a couple of factors so bear these in mind when mulling over your indoor home swimming pool plans.

If you are lucky enough to already have a room or space in your house for your new pool, then planning is unlikely to be required.

However, if you are thinking about housing your pool in a new building, constructed in your garden or built as an extension to your existing house, then you will need to check with your local planning department. 

Outbuildings designed to take a swimming pool are known as 'pool halls'. In the majority of cases they will fall under your permitted development rights — check that your pool hall meets the limits and conditions before breaking ground to be on the safe side. 

Likewise, if your pool is to be located in a new extension to your house, providing the extension does not exceed your permitted development rights, planning permission is unlikely to be required. "Obtaining a Lawful Development Certificate is, however, advisable, particularly if you intend to sell the house in the future," says Claire Lloyd, editor of Homebuilding & Renovating.

Do bear in mind that the construction of a swimming pool will mean you need space for a plant room too so be sure to take this into account when designing an outbuilding or extension for the pool.

Outdoor Swimming Pool Building Regulations

Building regulations for outdoor swimming pools and natural swimming pools are less involved than those surrounding indoor swimming pools — in fact, Building Regulations approval is not usually required at all for outdoor pools. The only stipulation is that they should be uncovered and have no heated air surrounding them. 

Constructing a permanent heated and ventilated structure over the pool will mean it is classed as an indoor pool and will need to comply with the regulations relating to them.

It is useful to bear in mind that despite there being no Building Regulations to comply with, it makes sense to ensure your pool is properly insulated and invest in a good cover as this will conserve heat meaning lower running costs.

Indoor Swimming Pool Building Regulations

If it is an indoor home swimming pool you are constructing you will need to read up on Building Regulations Part L. This section relates to the conservation of fuel and power and states that all new indoor pools constructed after 1st October 2010 (when the new document came into force) must be insulated to a U value no higher than 0.25W/m2.K.

This is actually a good thing — by insulating to achieve these U values you will experience lower running costs and a reduced carbon footprint. Opting for a pool with a shell coated in a high density polyurethane spray insulation is a great way of achieving this. 

Indoor home swimming pools are seen one of life's great luxuries and extravagances, but as homeowners are exercising more at home we're seeing an increase in this feature being included in extension and self build designs. 

As with outdoor swimming pools, they offer a chance for relaxation in the privacy of your own home, as well as a beautiful space (when designed properly) for a calming retreat.

Are Indoor Home Swimming Pools a Good Idea?

Although indoor swimming pools are less popular than outdoor designs (with pool specialist Compass Pools finding only around 20% of the pools they install are indoors), if you're after a serene place for exercise without leaving your home then they're a good investment. 

Not only are they easier to maintain than outdoor pools in terms of cleaning (no leaves of detritus to worry about) and possibly heating, they can be used at any time of year and weather. 

"Certainly over the last couple of years this has been boosted with the restrictions on going abroad due to Covid," explains Adam Knibb, director of Adam Knibb Architects. "The integration of pools within properties has been slowly gaining momentum within building projects. 

"Certainly within our works, clients have aspirations to either have a pool for the first time or to move an external pool to an internal set up. The internal benefits allow you to use the pool all year round, providing there is space." 

However, you will need to carefully discuss dehumidification with your designer as this will be essential in a functioning pool space. 

1. Customise an Indoor Pool to Your Lifestyle

"Consider how the pool will be used," begins Simon Baker, director of Nash Baker Architects. "For example, will it be used for kids parties, swimming lessons, endurance training or as a relaxing spa? This will help inform the optimum size, depth and features, such as massage jets or counter-current swim jet.

"Understanding how the pool might be used helps us design the entire space; with the poolside being just as important for some, often with additional spaces for spa facilities such as saunas and hammams.

"Swimming pools are highly technical with a lot of mechanical and electrical equipment to hide. Architects and designers spend a lot of time coordinating the various elements of the design to ensure this is all hidden from sight but can still be accessed and maintained easily and safety. 

"Consideration is also given to the long-term suitability of materials, as chlorinated swimming pools produce a humid and corrosive environment which will shorten the lifespan of normal building materials, and/or require additional upkeep."

2. Create an Indoor Lap Pool

For a pool that is ideal for exercise, aim for a size of at least 14 metres in length, but the width of the pool can be dictated by budget. Lap pools can also allow for interesting, rectangular designs.

Lap pools don't tend to feature graduating steps from floor to in the water as this reduces its usable area, so install metal pull-up rails and vertical steps you would see in the deep end of a gym pool. 

3. Go Small with a Hydrojet or Large Hot Tub

If you don't have the space or the funds for in-ground, large swimming pool ideas, consider installing a hydrojet pool. 

"A hydrojet is a pump that creates a stream of water that you can swim against," explains energy efficiency expert David Hilton. "It is similar to a treadmill that allows you to swim for miles without actually moving an inch. These pumps can cost around £1,200 upwards."

A hot tub is another alternative if you're after a place to relax. This above-ground hot tub was built in a garden room which was designed to match the same interior and exterior styles as the main house. 

4. Keep an Indoor Pool Eco

Although pools aren't know for being especially eco friendly, developments in the last decade have dramatically reduced their impact. Heat pumps for swimming pools reduce reliance on traditional heating systems, and an increased focus on better insulation in houses means the carbon footprint is made smaller. 

An alternative to a traditional indoor pool is installing natural swimming pools. Although better known as outdoor features, indoor designs are also chemical free. 

While building this large pool house (designed by Oakwrights), 21 boreholes were drilled into the ground during the groundworks. The system now works as one continuous pipe loop to absorb the warmth from the ground and transfers it up the the pool house to heat not just the structure and the pool, but also the homeowner's main house and a nearby cottage. 

The building also features high levels of insulation and an air ventilation system to keep moisture levels down in the oak frame building. 

5. Find the Right Position for an Indoor Pool

"Having a pool can give a huge amount of pleasure — either for fun or fitness (or both!)," says Adam Knibb. "Site location is a key factor in positioning a pool — the enjoyment of an internal pool is that you can use whatever the weather but when the sun is out to have the flood the space and open doors gives an internal pool another dimension."

Some homeowners purpose-build basements or extensions for their indoor pools, while others use bespoke garden room ideas to house the new addition, depending on the space and budget available.

No matter where the position of your indoor pool, be sure to have good access to a decent bathroom or changing area nearby.

6. Create a Space for Wellbeing 

When designing an indoor pool, hone in on the relaxing atmosphere created by spas and hotels and bring these ideas into your home. 

If your pool in located in a basement, boost a feeling of wellbeing using sun pipes or carefully positioned light wells and rooflights, as in this modern pool.

7. Specify the Right Materials For an Indoor Pool

Unlike an outdoor pool, decking might look a little odd surrounding your pool area so most homeowner choose tiles or natural stone to line the design. 

"Simple use of internal materials can help the pool setting," says Adam Knibb. "We like to use stone on the floors which flow into the pool and then break up the walls with timber cladding."

When choosing tiles, look for products with anti-slip properties, such as porcelain and ceramic, or a mosaic pattern. 

8. Introduce an Inside-Outside Pool

How to Heat an Indoor Pool

"Indoor pools still need to be insulated and the air temperature in the pool room needs to ideally be a minimum of 3ºC warmer than the water to reduce evaporative heat loss," explains David Hilton. 

"As an example, you may have the pool water temperature at around 25ºC and therefore the room temperature will need to be around 28ºC. That is around 10ºC warmer than your normal room temperature and means that you may need to increase the insulation in the fabric of the building. 

"At higher temperatures, air has the ability to hold more water vapour. It is therefore still a good idea to have a good pool cover on an indoor pool. You will also need to ventilate the room at a much higher rate than is required for normal habitation, in order to avoid condensation. While the pool cover is closed you can often lower the room temperature as well. 

"A specialist mechanical heat recovery with ventilation (MVHR) unit is required that can handle the high volumes and corrosive nature of the air as well as have the ability to apply efficient heat and modulate its output." 

Is an Indoor Home Swimming Pool a Good Investment?

"Whether, swimming pools are a good investment will depend on the cost of the project, the quality of the pool and poolside, and whether future purchasers see added value in having a pool," explains Simon Baker.

"An indoor swimming pool in your own home might be the ultimate luxury for some, and an expensive headache for others. Therefore, I would encourage anyone considering an indoor swimming pool to ask themselves how much they will use it, and balance this against the upfront cost, and ongoing time and cost associated with maintaining a pool.

"Swimming pools also consume large amounts of water and energy, so I think there is an environmental and ethical perspective which client should be informed about before diving into a pool project. The environmental impact can be mitigated through the use of renewables to heat and maintain the pool temperature but when a site supports it, I encourage clients to also consider natural swimming pools."

How Much Does it Cost to Build an Indoor Pool?

"For indoor pools you would add £40k to the base pool price [starting at around £60k] for an air handling system, then the cost of the building which is generally around £2k/m2," advises Alex Kemsley of Compass Pools. 

"All in indoor pools generally fall as a project around £350-500k." 

Do You Need Planning Permission for an Indoor Pool?

"While you can, in some places, install an external pool under Permitted Development and internal pool will most likely always need planning permission due to the size of the building required to enclose the pool — this tends to sit outside the boundaries of Permitted Development," explains Adam Knibb.

"The combination of pool, poolside and plant room will require considerable space, and invariably will require a purpose-built space or structure," says Simon Baker. "In central London, where space is at a premium, this might be in the form of a basement. Elsewhere this could be a freestanding garden structure or extension to the house.

"Whether you require planning consent will depend upon site constraints and local authority. Some site will be able to build basements, construct large single storey outbuilding and extensions using their Permitted Development (PD) rights. 

"However, owners should seek professional advice as there are complex rules and restrictions which will limit what can be done under PD. Even if your structure doesn’t require planning consent, the mechanical equipment such as air-source heat pumps might."

Chemicals are not used to clean the water; instead natural swimming pools rely on natural filtration using a range of aquatic plants, which clean the water in an organic way.

What is a Natural Swimming Pool?

Natural swimming pools – which can be as small as 15m2 – come in two main forms: 

• the traditional natural pool (or pond);
• and the living pool, which visually looks more like a traditional filtered pool. 

When it comes to how natural swimming pools work, the idea is that a large, deep pool – the swimming area – is surrounded by marginal planting that filters and purifies the water naturally. In essence, this type of natural swimming pool has the look and feel of a large pond. 

Construction involves creating a reinforced, lined swimming pool area, alongside a series of filtration beds made again with a liner and a series of planted shingle pools, which help to remove debris.

The plants are used as a living filtration system, absorbing nutrients in order keep the water clear and clean. Plants are bedded into several layers of gravel and other filtration materials. In the absence of soil, plants are forced to get their nutrients from the water.

Beneath the gravel, perforated pipes are installed and draw water through them thanks to a hidden suction pump. As this water passes plant roots, nutrients are absorbed to help with their growth. The purified water is then re-circulated back into the bottom of the swimming zone. 

Unlike a traditional pool, a natural swimming pool’s feel is best maintained by dark green liners. As its filtration system relies entirely on plants, using a darker liner will give some secondary warming that the light blue or aqua liners of a traditional pool don’t. 

You can also install lighting both in the main swimming area and through the marginal filtration beds.

What is a Natural Living Pool?

Unlike natural swimming pools, living pools look much more like a conventional swimming pool. Although they can still feature marginal planting and are chemical free, it is also possible for them to have no water plants. 

Biotop – a specialist company that has been making natural pools for over 30 years – has introduced a natural filtering system that works to create this more traditional-looking swimming pool. It includes a series of hidden underground sand filters for cleaning, before the water is pumped back into the pool. 

This removes the phosphorus that is the main cause of algae blooms and during the swimming season a pool robot cleans the pool daily — lighting can even be added into the main body of the pool. 

Living pools are suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation and range in size from tiny plunge type pools to large designs. It is common to use an air source heat pump for swimming pools like this. 

It is advisable to cover living pools when they are not in regular use, using solar or thermal covers.

When weighing up the pros and cons of building a swimming pool, it is useful to take a look at the benefits of natural swimming pools. These include:

• No chemicals — A fresh water pool with no chemical disinfectants is good for swimmers’ skin and the environment.

• No one-size-fits-all — A living pool is a great alternative if space is limited or if you’d prefer a more traditional-looking pool.
• Low maintenance — With only a little pruning needed, the plants keep a natural pool clean and the filter systems in a living pool keep it debris and algae-free.
• A haven for wildlife — a natural pool will of course invite a whole host of wildlife into your garden.

How Do You Design a Natural Swimming Pool?

When it comes to designing a natural swimming pool, the aim should be to ensure the pool blends in and enhances the natural elements of the garden, taking into account its proportions, as well as that of the house. 

The swimming area of a natural pool can be informal in shape or more rectangular. A natural swimming pool (as opposed to a living pool) can take up quite a bit of space and like any pool, needs to be constructed on a level or levelled site. 

For a pool with a swimmable area of 20m2 the entire pool would need to be 40m2. This size tends to suit rural locations and those with larger gardens because alongside the pool you will need shallow space for a deck, terrace or jetty access point. The pool area will also need to be planted to merge with the herbaceous and shrub planting that outline the margins of the pool.

It is advisable to visit suppliers to see their pools — The Swimming Pond Company have a show pond you can visit, for instance. Suppliers will carry out a site visit and come up with a design proposal that includes planting plans and specifications.

How Much Do Natural Swimming Pools Cost to Build in the UK?

A natural swimming pool costs from £300 to £600/m2, with the price /m2 decreasing as the overall area increases. This may sound odd, but as the pool gets bigger many of the expensive items it requires – machinery hire, waste disposal, and some materials – remain the same in terms of up front cost. These items are then used over a larger volume of space, with the result that it effectively costs less. 

Added to this, smaller natural swimming pools are often located in more restrictive spaces, which has an impact on costs and labour. 

Designs are landscaped to sites and individual requirements, so construction costs may be high compared with traditional pools. Over time, however, natural pond owners save on the cost of chemicals and expensive filtration equipment.

How Much Do a Natural Living Pools Cost?

Natural living pools are more expensive and should always really be installed by a qualified specialist. You could expect an average-sized 20m2 living pool to cost in the region of £60,000. 

How Do Natural Swimming Pools Stay Clean?

Natural swimming pools are usually made up of two zones — the swimming pool and the filter beds. These are separated by a shallow band of stone and this separation can be given a natural feel, or a more contemporary one (using a band of cut stone, for example). 

Either way, this band stops the soil of the planted filtration beds moving into the main body of the pool. It is usually positioned roughly 50mm below the surface and should be 100mm to 200mm in width.

One of the advantages of a natural pool is the shallow planted margins that form its natural filters. Rather than the traditional drop into water, the margins on natural swimming pools are sloped. 

A 20m2 pool, for example, will slope downwards about a metre from the edge to roughly 400mm below ground level (or your set 0 point if you’re building on a slope and are creating an artificial level). The depth of the swimming area will be around 1.5m. So for a 40m2 pool the shallow graded margins need to be 20m2 — this will include 7m2 of bio (plant-based) filtration and 13m2 of marginally planted space that will allow the water to purify. 

The swimming area will be 20m2 with a depth of at least 1.5m to allow good swimming and stop plants creeping away from the ledges to the swimming area.

What Plants Are Used in a Natural Swimming Pool?

Planting for a natural pool is key. Of course, like any part of the garden, it will require maintenance — herbaceous aquatic plants will need to be recut back in the late autumn. 

It’s also worth remembering that the term ‘filtration plants’ can be a misleading one as the plants do not remove particulate matter from the water. What they actually do is absorb and capture nutrients from the water — in turn meaning algae (which thrive on these nutrients) will not grow and bloom in the water. 

The amount of nutrients that a plant absorbs is more or less proportional to the amount of plant growth. So, plants that grow ‘greener’ are removing more nutrients, but this can also mean that they grow more aggressively. 

Common species used to filter include: 

• marsh marigold
• flag iris
• loosestrife
• hop sedge
• water mint 
• and water lilies. 

Do Natural Swimming Pools Attract Insects?

Fresh water attracts a host of acrobatic insects. Damselfly feed on mosquito larvae, using leggy stems of flag iris to emerge from the water. Pond skaters, water boatmen and iridescent dragonfly are common. 

Surprisingly for their size, many aquatic species depend on freshwater ponds for refuge, including more than 100 UK Biodiversity Action Plan priority species.

"As swimming pool shells get better insulated, and hot tubs and spa pools become more popular, having a pool is no longer the preserve of the rich and famous," begins sustainable energy expert David Hilton. 

"A pool certainly can now be a good and feasible investment, and the running costs do not need to break the bank. The pool will give you house of fun and relaxation and also become a great asset in the home.

"Even in tropical climes, swimming pools still need heating. Without heating you could expect to use an outdoor pool for two or three months of the year and with heat maybe eight months of the year. Given that our sunshine is a little less predictable than most countries, we need heating even in the warmest months."

1. Install a Small Jet Pool Where Space in Limited

If you want a pool but don't have the space, modern companies have been working on solving this exact problem for years. A calming dip in a small pool is also generally cheaper than in larger designs. 

"Smaller pools are clearly easier to insulate, as well as being cheaper to install and heat," says David Hilton. "But they are not so useful for swimming lengths in, unless you fit a counter current hydro jet. This is an adjustable pump that creates a stream of water that you swim against. It is similar to a treadmill, as it allows you to swim for miles 'on the spot'. These pumps costs from around £1,200 upwards." 

The clever design of this urban courtyard has meant that a swimming pool has been introduced (installed by Home Counties Pools & Hot Tubs). With a load-boarding cover that acts as decking when not in use, the pool also has hydro jets, meaning the homeowner can exercise. Her pool cost £80,000.  

2. Integrate a Swimming Pool into a Garden Landscape

Planning your swimming pool as part of a wider garden design landscaping scheme will help combat against a 'plonked-in' look. 

Using patio ideas from other areas of your garden to inform the materials used in and around the pool, for instance, can help create a cohesive look. Planted beds and trees can not only create privacy and a wind break around your pool, but also make the pool area feel more established.

This stunning contemporary design uses evergreen plants in a corten raised planters to shelter the pool, while bringing a spot of colour that can be enjoyed even in the colder months. 

3. Consider the Eco Options for a New Pool

They need careful planning, with specific planting required to filter and purify the water. However, more and more self builders and renovators are considering natural pools as an option as they offer low-maintenance results and a natural aesthetic.

4. Get Creative with the Shape of Water 

Don't feel limited by rectangular shapes for pool designs and let the landscape and garden size and shape inform your design.

Contemporary curved shapes are an enticing option for those with a usual or irregular garden space while sloping gardens might suit an infinity pool style as part of a terrace. 

5. Use a Heat Pump to Heat your Pool

Traditional pools of times gone by were often seen as wasteful — being heated year round for occasional use. However, using heat pumps for swimming pools is a great way to combat this.

"A heat pump will heat the water at a third to a fifth of the cost of direct resistance electricity, and a dedicated swimming pool heat pump will cost under £2,000 for a swimming pool and around £1,500 for a hot tub or spa," advises David Hilton. 

A swimming pool was a must for the homeowner behind this renovation project. It is heated by a heat pump, meaning it can be used for a daily swim even in the cooler months.

6. Make a Garden Pool Look Nice with Careful Designing

Just as you would any other room in the house, begin a swimming pool plan with a moodboard of inspiring images and ideas that you want to capture. 

Include lighting for late-night dips and an atmospheric evening look, as well as more obvious elements like paving and shapes. 

Take the lead from the house's style and detailing for a really thought-through scheme. This modernist house design is echoed in the pale paving and careful side planting. The downlighting on the exterior of the house is also reflected in the side spotlights of the pool. 

7. Choose the Right Paving for a Pool Surround

Use garden paving ideas to inform the right material to surround your pool. Practical considerations must be made in terms of anti-slip coatings, porosity and sharp corners.

"The swimming pool at Gowland House (pictured above) was designed to suit the specific setting out of the external patio anti-slip tiles avoiding the need for cut tiles," explains Tom William, director of ID Architecture. 

"The full size tiles form the edge to the pool creating an elegant termination detail with the retracting pool cover hidden beneath. 

"This required a lot of careful detailing with the external drainage as the pools sits within a glazed U-shape arrangement, which meant we needed to fall the patio away from both the frameless glass windows (serving the open plan space, hallway, formal dining area and ground floor bedroom) while also falling the patio away from the swimming pool to prevent contamination.

"The depth of the pool was also carefully designed to suit the height of our clients as they wanted to ensure the water level came up to their shoulders when standing as the heated pool was to be used all year round."

10. Install the Right Pool Covering

"The simplest covers are bubble covers. They are effectively a UV- and chemical- resistant blanket of bubble wrap that floats on the surface of the water," explains David Hilton. "A roller station which sits on the outside of the pool, is used to roll the blanket off the pool and store it safety (as shown above). 

They are often referred to as solar covers because they slow the convective heat loss, resulting in a small net temperature rise in the water. A solar bubble cover costs from around £400 upwards. 

"Most bubble covers are not considered to be safety covers (some do function in this way — check the manufacturer's specification). If you jump or fall onto it you could become enveloped, and as such they often need to be installed with a sturdy safety net or be anchor to the edge of a pool. 

"A rigid slatted pool cover is a more durable option. It can be installed as an above-ground solution and can be fitted to many new pools with an integral motorised roller. Rigid covers start at around £2,000."

Another option is a retractible rigid cover which can be used as decking when the pool is closed. Expect to pay at least £6,000. 

11. Opt for an Above Ground Pool Design

For a swimming pool without the budget or installation fees, above ground options can be disassembled and reinstalled elsewhere (ideal if you're thinking about selling in the next few years and don't want to lose your investment). 

Both above ground swimming pool and hot tubs aren't known to be the prettiest of choices, but structures and facades can be construction around them.

12. Build a Pool House or Garden Room

What is the Cheapest Option for a Pool?

Certainly an outdoor pool. Prices start from about £60k including vat with the average being around £100k when you add some must have eco and safety options such as solar safety cover, variable speed pump, and heat pump. 

"An above ground pool will cost less to install than an in-ground one, as there will be less groundwork necessary. For a smaller pool of around 4m x 2.5m you will be looking at around £6,000," says David Hilton. "Therefore (on the budget end of the scale) you could realistically have a pool installed with a counter flow pump and a fully insulated safety cover with change from £9,000."

How are Swimming Pools Heated?

"No matter where you put your pool you will need to insulate it as best you can," says David Hilton. "Conductive heat will be lost to the ground and convective heat will be lost through evaporation to the air. 

"Most swimming pools now have insulated shells, which will reduce heat loss to the ground. The surface of all pools should be covered and insulated to prevent evaporative heat loss." 

Do You Need Planning Permission for a New Pool?

"Often planning permission is not required for an outdoor swimming pool, but unfortunately it is not a simple yes or no answer as there are certain constraints surrounding permitted development rights," explains Tom Williams, director of ID Architects. 

"Currently, when constructing new build dwellings, if the internal pool is attached to the house (within the dwelling itself) the pool will qualify for zero rating and therefore VAT exempt. However, interestingly, when constructing an outdoor pool, even as part of a new build house, unless a hydrotherapy pool, VAT will be applicable."

A home swimming pool can seem like an attractive prospect, especially when you find yourself in the midst of a summer heatwave. However, as you can imagine, investing in a swimming pool, whether indoor or in the garden, is no small commitment.

Not only do they take up a lot of room, they're expensive to install and heat, and maintenance on a poor quality pool will leave you with a potential headache that's unusable for large parts of the year.

A Home Swimming Pool for Garden: What Type of Pool is Best? 

There are four main swimming pool types: indoor, outdoor, in-ground, and above ground. The decision between these options will hugely impact the design required, installation, and cost.

Indoor vs Outdoor

Indoor home swimming pools either require an extension into a garden, basement conversion or dedicated garden building while outdoor swimming pools, unless heated, might not be appealing for many people through the winter months.

"Pools are a commitment, it is hard to adapt a pool into another room should your needs change in the future," begins Dylan Godwin, architectural designer at AR Design Studio. "Indoor pools are a part of the house – to be successful they require involvement from the architect and design team throughout the process. They shouldn’t be viewed as an addition."

However, in our temperate British climate an outdoor pool is often considered something of a nuisance — a blight to an otherwise attractive garden, as opposed to a selling point.

In-ground vs Above Ground

In-ground pools demand a more invasive design and installation process while above ground pools are less permanent (and cheaper), but are more easily removed by future owners. They may well take into account the cost of removing an in-ground pool — potentially devaluing the property. However, this depends greatly on the pool in question as modern construction methods can eliminate a lot of the risks.

"One concept that is becoming more popular in the UK, following on from long standing trends in main land Europe, is the idea of a natural swimming pool," explains landscape designer Paul Hervey-Brookes.

"Natural swimming pools don't use chemicals to clean the water but are instead filters using aquatic plants which clean the water naturally." Natural pools can be built indoors or outdoors, but are most commonly in-ground designs.

Investigating good swimming pool ideas before making any decisions on the best type of swimming pool will ensure you get the right model for your money.

Can I Build a Swimming Pool in My Garden? 

Swimming pools can be built in most sized gardens — even the smallest outdoor space can include a pool with a hydrojet (like a treadmill for swimming) if desired.

If you're looking to include a swimming pool in your garden or within the home during a self-build, make this very clear to your design team from the very beginning. "Discuss the brief with your design team at the outset of the process to define your requirements and ensure the pool is considered appropriately within the design," advises Dylan Godwin.

"The use of fitness or pleasure will influence size, depth, and which areas of the house you want it to connect to," he continues. "The possibility of a heated pool may also impact the amount of plant required depending on size. Answering these questions will allow the architect to design your pool and associated plant room as a part of the house and not a tacked on addition. The earlier this is confirmed the quicker rough costs can be established and factored into the wider house budget."

What is the Cheapest Type of Swimming Pool?

The cheapest solution is a small unheated above-ground outdoor pool. Dolphin Leisure, for instance offer a 12ft x 4.3 ft steel frame pool for £2,355. A competent DIYer could install one themselves, though it will do nothing for the value of the property. It is, however, easier to remove than an in-ground pool.

For DIY enthusiasts, self build in-ground kits start from around £5,000 (excluding additional building materials and machinery hire), but you will require some building knowledge to install one. All Swim offer a self build 6m x 3m concrete pool kit for £3,400.

"Having to enclose your pool in a building makes indoor pools typically more expensive than outdoor pools," adds AR Design Studio's Dylan Godwin.

VAT on a new build is largely free — so this will save you money if you include a pool as part of an overall build.

Do You Need Planning Permission for a Swimming Pool?

Before you begin any project, you have to make sure you comply with swimming pool planning permission and building regs.

"Typically for an indoor pool you can build it under Permitted Development if your PD rights are intact," explains Origin Pool's Dave Horne. "For an outdoor pool it is dependent on where you are as some local councils do have different regulations. If you have a listed building you will need planning permission."

What is the Best Way to Heat a Swimming Pool?

Swimming pools require a significant amount of energy to keep warm. Pool heaters look a bit like boilers and can run off oil, electricity or gas. Some modern systems will use heat pumps for swimming pools.

For example, using an air source heat pump to extract energy from the air, you can expect up to 5kW from 1kW of electricity.

When choosing a pool shell — be it concrete, liner or one piece — it’s worth considering the long-term running costs as a little investment early on in an efficient pool shell and cover, can pay dividends in the long run.

One of the problems is that, unlike an enclosed space, the pool will lose heat just as soon as it gets up to the required temperature (usually 26–30°C).

"Most of our customers opt for an air source heat pump, with typical running costs of just £5 per day in summer, for a 11m x 4m insulated carbon ceramic pool,” says Alex Kemsley from Compass Pools.

For those looking to go a step further, investment in a super energy-efficient system (perhaps to linked to a ground source heat pump) with a solar cover could expect even lower running costs.

Traditionally, when not used, a solar and debris blanket covers the pool to minimise losses (around 80% of a pool’s heat escapes through the surface).

The clever option is to invest in some form of renewables setup, which runs through a heat exchanger to heat the water. Using a solar thermal array makes sense, as the pool will be heated well on the sunny days when you really want to use the pool.

Another option is to use biomass boiler (linked to a heat store). For these more complex solutions you’ll need specialist advice, but the significant investment is usually well worth it.

Is it Expensive to Maintain a Pool? 

The running costs of a swimming pool depend on your choice of heating system. While an electric system is lower cost initially than a heat pump, it will cost far more to heat your pool in the long run.

Keeping a swimming pool heated is the largest obstacle to overcome, as any pool will loose heat from the surface, but especially outdoor pools. To work out the cost of electricity, look at the surface area in square meters, Use 200W per square metre for an exposed outdoor swimming pool to around 50W if the swimming pool is in a protected location with a good thermal cover. Keeping the air in an indoor pool building warm will help to reduce air heat loss, but this has its own heating implications.

"For an outdoor pool that is going to be used for six months in a year the service visit cost will be around £110 plus VAT (depending on how much you’re willing to do yourself)," explains Dave Horne. "If you’re wanting someone to check in every week it will add up across the year.

"Heating costs for an outdoor pool using an air source heat pump will have gone up recently so they would be around £1,500 for a swim season. Running an indoor pool is probably going to be closer to £4,500 - £5,000 a year as it’s heated all year round."

How Much Will I Use a Swimming Pool?

One of the biggest worries that potential swimming pool owners have is how much use they will get out of it. It’s a significant sacrifice in terms of cost and garden space so you’ll need to be sure that you’ll be enjoying it to the max.

In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of self-builds and extensions with swimming pools thanks to the 2020 national lockdown preventing people from attending gyms and a spike in heatwaves (in particular July 2022 where temperatures soared into the 40s).

Of course, if you’re building an indoor pool, weather is not an issue, but for outside pools – which form the overwhelming majority – you will also be governed by the seasons. “Outdoor pools are mainly used from late March until the end of September, but we have customers who swim all year round, especially those that heat their pool up for a Christmas dip, with the steam rising up,” says Alex Kemsley from Compass Pools.

Largely, your ability to use it depends on your willingness to heat it — but unless you’re investing significantly in an energy-efficient system or are willing to spend a fortune on heating it conventionally, you will have to accept that it is going to be lying dormant for at least half of the year.

What Size Should my Swimming Pool Be?

Swimming pools come in a variety of sizes and the temptation is to try and economise on size to minimise costs. The smallest is usually 6 x 3m but as that requires little more than a handful of strokes to tick off a length, you might find it a little frustrating. At this size, most customers install a swim jet or counter current to allow their pool to be turned into an 'endless pool' — sort of like a treadmill for swimming pool.

The standard is actually 11 x 4m (x 1.5m deep), with most companies offering a larger size off-the-shelf (although most will create bespoke sizes if you insist). This size gives a nice balance of usability and running costs, as the bigger the pool the more water to heat. You will, of course, need extra space around the pool of about 2m — plus associated space for a plant and filtration kit.

How is a Swimming Pool Installed?

There are essentially four ways of building a pool. Most common is the traditional block and liner technique, which, as its name suggests, consists of masonry blocks and a vinyl liner (the liners usually have a lifespan of around 5–10 years).

Secondly, a gunite shell — which is made up of a steel mesh frame onto which shotcrete or gunite is sprayed — is finished with a waterproof render and tiled. Thirdly, a polyethylene preformed shell is used.

And finally a more recent development, the carbon ceramic shell. This uses technology from the aerospace industry to deliver an energy efficient pre-made shell ready plumbed and all fitted out to your specification — bit like ordering a car.

The techniques get progressively more expensive but are also quicker to install, less prone to failure (cracking and liner failure being the two killers for the outdoor swimming pool) and more efficient to run.

When employing a pool installer, make sure they are a member of SPATA (the Swimming Pool and Allied Trade Association). This means you will automatically be protected against them being unable to complete the contract, and will have warranty insurance cover.

How Do I Keep a Swimming Pool Safe?

Safety is a huge issue, but with a sensible approach it can be built in to the installation, and risk — while never entirely removed — can be minimised.

“I can’t remember the last time we installed a pool without a safety cover," says Alex Kemsley from Compass Pools. "They are a fair investment starting at £10,000, however they can save a life. They also make life a lot easier as the pool is opened at the touch of a button, dirt is kept out and heat is added by turning the entire pool into a big solar panel."

Your safest bet? A 4ft-high locked (and alarmed) fence around the pool with an automatic safety cover and rescue equipment nearby. It’s also worth checking out a French-standard pool alarm (from around £500), which protects the perimeter of the pool using infra-red technology — a bit like a burglar alarm.

Did you know you can use heat pumps for swimming pools? A swimming pool can potentially be heated by any heating appliance, but a heat pump can be a very efficient and low carbon method of heating the pool water.

While standard heat pumps can be used for swimming pools, there's also an option of efficient, less expensive heat pumps specifically designed for pools that you may also be able to take advantage of. 

We explore the key information you need to know when looking at heat pumps as a heat source for your swimming pool. 

Why Choose a Heat Pump for a Swimming Pool?

A swimming pool can be heated by a domestic hot water heat pump via a suitably sized heat exchanger or alternatively a dedicated swimming pool heat pump can be used. 

A domestic hot water heat pump will usually have a slower flow of water through its heat exchanger and the resultant temperature rise in that water will be higher that a dedicated swimming pool heat pump which will have its own heat exchanger (usually made of titanium to be resilient to the pool water chemicals) that is plumbed in series with the pool pump and filter system. 

The water flows very fast through the heat exchanger and the temperature rise is very low, sometimes under 1°C. This low temperature difference allows the heat pump to be very efficient, often achieving efficiencies of over 500%. 

What Type of Heat Pump Should I Use for a Swimming Pool?

All types of heat pumps can potentially be used to heat a swimming pool but the choice of which one is ideal for your project will be determined by your specific requirements. An indoor pool will be used all year round so therefore the heat pump needs to be capable of operating in winter conditions as well as achieving the required water temperature at those times. 

The swimming pool will have a fairly high energy requirement and as such a ground source heat pump will need a ground loop that is sized for that load. If the ground source heat pump is also providing the heat to the home and sanitary hot water then the maximum heat load of the home, hot water load and the swimming pool load will need to be calculated and the unit sized and ground collector (either horizontal loops or borehole loops) to cope with the highest load in winter but also be capable of covering the smallest loads in summer without going into short start-stop cycles. 

Many European heat pumps have a limited number of starts per hour and if that is done in the first 10 minutes then the unit will not turn on again for an hour.

How Do Heat Pumps for Swimming Pools Work? 

A standard medium or high temperature heat pump can be used to heat a swimming pool if plumbed to an appropriately sized heat exchanger but there are also dedicated swimming pool heat pumps as well. 

A swimming pool air source heat pump is usually a simpler product than heat pumps you would see connected to a home for central heating and hot water. The swimming pool air source heat pump has a larger heat exchanger (usually made of titanium to be resilient to the high chemical content in swimming pool water) that allows the swimming pool water to flow through it a lot faster as the swimming pool filter pump is running. The higher speed of the water flow results in a much lower temperature rise per cycle and therefore higher efficiency. 

Because there is now circulation pump and also low temperature rise and usually a higher ambient air temperature the average efficiency can be over 500%. Therefore, for every 1kWh you use to run the heat pump it will deliver 5kWh of heat to the swimming pool. 

Can I Use a Heat Pump to Heat a Swimming Pool All Year Round?

A dedicated swimming pool heat pump is usually used when the ambient air temperature is high and therefore is not always suitable for all year use. 

Many of them do not have a defrost cycle as they are predominantly used on outdoor swimming pools in warmer climates, so they may not be suitable for use in winter. 

You can however use the more domestic type heat pumps if you have an indoor swimming pool that you intend to use all year round.

How Long Does a Heat Pump Take to Heat a Pool?

An appropriately sized heat pump will usually heat the swimming pool in around 4 to 5 days.

However, you can make a more accurate estimate for a specific swimming pool with this formula:

Seconds = Litres x 4.18 (specific heat capacity of water) x temperature difference / kW

Therefore if you have a 12kW heat pump on an 8m x 4m x 1m (average depth) swimming pool that you want to heat to 25 degrees (lets assume the cold water is 5 degrees) then here is the calculation:

Seconds = 32000 x 4.18 x 20 ÷ 12

This equals 222, 933 seconds, or 62 hours

This does not take into account any heat loss during the heat up time so that needs to be added.

How Efficient are Heat Pumps for Swimming Pools?

A dedicated swimming pool air source heat pump can realistically be around 500% efficient meaning that for every kWh of electricity that it uses it will produce 5kWh of heat. The efficiency of the heat pump is directly proportional to the ambient temperature of the air and the target temperature in the water. The further those two temperatures are apart the lower the efficiency

Pros and Cons of Heat Pumps for Swimming Pools

There are some reasons for and against heat pumps as a heat source for your swimming pool. 

On the plus side, heat pumps use electricity so you can use the generation from photovoltaic panels to power the heat pump. 

They're also incredibly efficient, and for every 1kWh of electricity used you can potentially get 5kWh of heat.

However, swimming pools require a lot of energy to heat, so you'll need to ensure the electric supply to the home is sufficient to cover the additional load of the swimming pool heating.

Heat pumps are not as fast as heating pool water in comparison to fossil fuel heaters, and there could be a noise associated with air source heat pumps

Are Heat Pumps for Swimming Pools Worth It?

A swimming pool heat pump can be a very efficient way of heating a swimming pool, especially if you have a source of electric generation on your home such as solar PV panels. 

Given the potentially higher levels of efficiency a heat pump can be the best value for money when compared with other heat sources, especially during the summer months. If you have an indoor swimming pool that you use all year then a seasonal efficiency needs to be calculated and compared against alternative heating fuels.

Size

What Size Heat Pump Do I Need for my Swimming Pool? 

The size and heat loss of the swimming pool will need to be defined and then a suitable heat pump specified to cover the heat loss and also have the capacity to reheat the swimming pool should you allow it to seasonally go cold. 

Many swimming pool circulation pumps will run for around eight hours a day. The heat pump should be able to deliver the required heat to the pool during those hours. If reheat is required then the pool pump is run for longer. An indoor swimming pool will have a lower heat loss than an outdoor pool but with an indoor pool you will also need to allow for heating the air in the pool room and also circulating that air. It is usual to maintain the air temperature at around 3 degrees warmer than the water temperature to mitigate evaporative losses. 

Air circulation is at a lot higher rate than what is required in a domestic home so it is not suitable to use a standard mechanical heat recovery ventilation (MVHR) unit for this. A dedicated swimming pool ventilation unit is required and very often these units can also manage the delivery of heat to the air and the swimming pool water.

How Much Does a Heat Pump for a Swimming Pool Cost?

The dedicated swimming pool heat pump can be a lot less expensive than the air source heat pumps that are typically plumbed to our homes for central heating and hot water preparation.

Dedicated swimming pool heat pumps start at around £1,500, but for a full air handling unit with heat management capabilities you could be looking at upwards of £15,000.

Running Costs of Using a Heat Pump to Heat a Swimming Pool

The running costs of a swimming pool heat pump will be directly proportional to the heat loss of the water. 

An outdoor swimming pool will usually have a significantly higher heat loss than an indoor swimming pool due to evaporative losses, lack of insulation and expose to cold winds. 

As a very general guide, look at the surface area in square meters and then use around 200W per square metre for an exposed outdoor swimming pool down to around 50W if the swimming pool is in a protected location with a good thermal cover. 

An indoor swimming pool will have less heat loss if the air in the pool room is warmer than the water. This air heat loss should then be included in the running cost for the heating of the swimming pool.

What Does Installation of a Heat Pump for a Swimming Pool Involve?

Installation of a heat pump to heat a swimming pool could be a simple as plumbing the unit in series with the return flow or water from the filer to the swimming pool, but in an existing indoor swimming pool there may also be some substantial building work required to access the pipework and then route it to the heat pump.

Can I Add a Heat Pump to an Existing Swimming Pool?

Yes. This can be a very simple installation if there is space near the swimming pool pump and filter and there is also a robust enough electricity supply. On an existing indoor pool or where space is limited and the pipes are all built into the landscaping then make sure you get a survey and on site quote.

Many swimming pool contractors will already have experience of working with these products so start there.
