If there's one thing every household needs in the cupboard, it's one of the best cooling fans. We may not need to use them all year round in the UK, but they're an absolute must-have when a hot and sticky heatwave strikes, helping to keep your home comfortable.

While cooling fans won't exactly lower the room temperature like the best portable air conditioners, they do have the advantage of being quieter and cheaper to run, without the need to vent a hose through a window.

Best cooling fan overall

As a light sleeper, Homebuilding's editor Beth Murton thought she could never have a cooling fan in her bedroom, but Duux's Whisper Flex 2 Fan changed her mind. With noise levels as low as 13 decibels and a Quiet Mark accreditation, Beth said, "I had no issues falling asleep" and "the fan was so quiet that I barely noticed it."

Not only did this cooling fan score top points for noise (or, rather, its lack of it!), but it also features a night mode that dims the LED display and prevents any beeps from sounding when you change the settings.

Another advantage of this device is that it can be converted from a 54cm desk fan to a 92cm standing fan in just a few seconds, making it the perfect choice whether you're working, watching TV, or going to sleep.

If electricity costs are always in the back of your mind when you run a fan, you'll be happy to know that the Whisper Flex 2 costs just 1p per hour to run on the lowest setting, according to Duux.

While the fan can be controlled using either a remote control or an app, Beth wasn't able to connect it to her Wi-Fi, so she couldn't set it up. For that reason, it lost half a star. However, according to online reviews, the app is very easy to use, so the issue may simply have been with the internet connection itself.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, we'd also recommend the MeacoFan Sefte 6" Air Circulator.

Best tabletop cooling fan

I've been using corded cooling fans for years, but after testing this portable model from Meaco, I'm never going back. Weighing just 3.2kg and featuring a built-in handle, the Sefte Pro 10" is a breeze to carry from room to room, and you won't have to worry about pesky cables getting tangled or in the way. This thing follows me everywhere during the summer.

When it comes to battery life, this fan lasts up to 40 hours on a full charge and takes just 3.5 hours to recharge. I also like that the battery is replaceable, meaning you don't need to chuck the whole thing out when it eventually dies. You can simply replace the battery instead, which is a more sustainable option.

Offering 12 speeds along with horizontal and vertical oscillation, this fan did a fantastic job of keeping my bedroom cool. Even when placed on the other side of the room, I could still feel the airflow (it can reach up to 32 metres).

Like Beth, I was sceptical about using a fan in my bedroom because I hate any kind of noise while I sleep, but I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet it was on the lower settings. I also appreciated the night mode, which dimmed the LED display and stopped the beeps when changing settings.

If you like the sound of this fan but were hoping to spend a little less, I would recommend the MeacoFan Sefte 6" instead, which is essentially a smaller, more affordable version.

Best pedestal cooling fan

This cooling fan comes highly recommended by our assistant editor, Sarah Harley, who was seriously impressed by its modern design and low noise levels. She awarded it a strong 4.5-star rating and says, "If I urge you to do one thing this summer, it's to invest in this."

Operating at just 25 decibels on its lowest setting, this fan is another great choice for light sleepers, with Sarah saying, "I slept soundly and woke fresh as a daisy." Like the previous two options in this guide, this model also features a night mode that dims the LED display and mutes beeping sounds when you change the settings.

The fan can be controlled via either an app or a remote control, which glows in the dark for easy use at night. It also offers 12 speed settings, along with both vertical and horizontal oscillation.

The height can be adjusted to three different levels, making it versatile whether you're working at a desk, lying in bed, or moving around the house. However, Sarah notes that it isn't the quickest fan to adjust.

As for running costs, this fan will set you back just 1p per hour, which we think is a total bargain considering how well it cools you down.

While Sarah believes this fan is well worth the investment, if you're hoping to spend less than £199 on a cooling fan, you may want to consider the MeacoFan Sefte Pro 10" Table Air Circulator instead.

Best air circulator

After testing the LUME Quiet Air Circulator Fan during a heatwave, our former News Editor, Joseph Mullane, was impressed by how effectively it cooled both his bedroom and home office.

Unlike other cooling fans he'd tested, which often left hot and cold spots, he found that this model kept the room consistently cool and comfortable. That's thanks to its 3D circulation system, which directs airflow in multiple directions simultaneously.

Like the DUUX Whisper Flex 2, which we also tested, this fan can be used as either a pedestal or tabletop fan and is easy to switch between the two modes, making it a versatile option for any room in the house.

The device offers 12 speed settings, along with horizontal and vertical oscillation. It operates at noise levels as low as 36 decibels, which Joseph said "blends into the background while I work" and "doesn't distract" him while he tries to sleep.

This fan also features a dimmable ambient light that gives it a warm, inviting glow, making it ideal for bedside use. It also includes a timer and sleep mode.

While Joseph was more than happy with the noise levels, this isn't the quietest option in this guide. If ultra-quiet operation is your top priority, you may want to consider the Duux Whisper Flex 2 Fan instead.

Best portable cooling fan

If you're looking for a fan you can carry from room to room (or even pack in the car for UK staycations), this is the model I'd recommend. It's so lightweight (weighing just 1.7 kg) that I can carry it using one finger via the built-in handle – and it scores bonus points for being both cordless and portable.

Having tested Meaco's Sefte Pro 10" Table Air Circulator (which is essentially a larger version of this fan), I was doubtful that I'd want or need another one. However, despite its compact size, which measures just six inches, I was surprised at just how powerful the cooling was.

While the battery isn't as long-lasting as the Sefte Pro 10", it still delivers an impressive 26 hours of life after three hours of charging, and you can run it while it charges, so you never get caught out. The battery is also replaceable, which gives me reassurance that it will last a long time.

There are 12 speed settings and three modes (normal, eco, and night), with the latter dimming the LED display and muting control sounds. Vertical oscillation is adjusted manually, while horizontal oscillation can be activated at the touch of a button – though I have noticed that it rattles and squeaks quite a lot, so I rarely use it.

If the rattling oscillation is a deal-breaker, I would opt for the Meaco Sefte Pro 10" Table Air Circulator, which I have never had this problem with.

The hub can be integrated with Apple products, including the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Mac, and AirPods, and can be used to control any device set up on a Matter protocol.

HomePod comes with a built-in temperature and humidity sensor to help you monitor your home's conditions through the Home app. When combined with smart curtains, you can set up automations for them to close when the temperature reaches a certain point.

The hub will also alert you if it detects a carbon monoxide or smoke alarm going off, and it gives you the option to remotely unlock your home or set automations even when you're away.

If the £299 price tag feels a little daunting, I have tested the HomePod Mini, which offers most of the same features but with a less powerful speaker system.

We love how user-friendly the IKEA Dirigera Hub is, with a beautifully designed app interface that makes controlling your smart devices effortless. You'll be able to group them by room and combine different ones, such as lighting and sound, to create a custom "scene."

The hub works with any smart system that's connected to the Matter protocol, as well as any IKEA smart device, such as its light bulbs, air purifier, thermostat, plug socket, window sensor, and more.

Priced at just £60, this is the second most affordable smart hub we've come across, and we think it's pretty reasonable considering it offers most of the same features as others.

My only caveat is that it works only with the Matter protocol. While this is the most popular system, it doesn't offer as much flexibility as, say, the Homey Pro, which works with eight.

The best mid-range smart hub

New and improved, the Philips Hue Bridge Pro has been updated from the previous version with a design that is up to five times faster, with enhanced smart features and more flexible connectivity. You can now place the hub anywhere in your home without the need for an Ethernet cable, and Hue MotionAware allows you to create motion-detection automations that turn on lights automatically.

The Hue Bridge Pro can connect to over 150 lights and up to 50 accessories using the Zigbee protocol, as well as Bluetooth-enabled Hue devices, and can be controlled via Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings.

You have the option to receive activity alerts through the SmartThings app (available on Android and iOS), create schedules, and set up lighting scenes.

It might not have any flashy features, like the high-tech speaker on the Apple HomePod or touch screen display on the Amazon Echo, but it's a good, basic option for those on a budget.

The best touch screen smart hub

The Amazon Echo smart hub has an eight-inch touchscreen display, which makes it easy to monitor and control your smart devices without the need for a phone or voice assistant.

I tested this device for a month and was impressed with how easy it was to set up – particularly when it came to connecting my Ring doorbell, which was pretty much automatic. It displays live footage from the camera and includes a microphone and speaker, which is ideal considering my partner is the only one with the Ring app currently installed on his phone.

Amazon Echo lets you control the lights, locks, climate, security, and media in your home, as well as categorising devices by room so you can manage them simultaneously. It also gives you access to a range of widgets, including a to-do list, and the option to use it as a digital photo frame – perfect if you mount it on the wall.

I found the touchscreen a little laggy at times, which meant I had to turn the device off and on again to get it to respond, and some of the widgets seemed a little pointless (fart noise button, anyone?). However, the display is a very nice feature and one that isn’t offered by many brands.

The temperature can be adjusted manually on the interface or through an app or voice assistant (including Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, the iOS app, or the Android app). There is also the option to program a seven-day schedule with six set points – perfect if you have a regular routine.

This smart thermostat can be used to control both your heating and hot water, and it features a "boost" function for a temporary override, so you always have access to a warm shower. There are lots of settings to choose from, including Auto (a programmed schedule), Manual (maintains a constant temperature), Eco (maintains an energy-efficient temperature), and Holiday (a reduced set temperature for when you are away).

We think this is a solid option, but if your home is powered by a heat pump, the Cielo Smart Thermostat Eco may be a better choice.

The Hive Mini V4 Smart Thermostat has the stamp of approval from Homebuilding's Editor, Beth Murton, and Assistant Editor, Sarah Harley, both of whom have one installed in their homes. It’s suitable for combi boilers and can be controlled manually via the touchscreen display, an app, or a voice assistant (Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Home).

This battery-powered device is OpenTherm compatible and offers frost protection for your pipes, a heating boost of up to six hours, and the ability to schedule up to six time slots each day.

Sarah has the hubless version (available on Screwfix) and loves how easily she can control her heating with the click of a button on her phone – whether that’s adjusting her schedule, boosting the heating, or turning it down when it gets too warm.

"That said, I think you have to be careful about where you place portable thermostats like this, as it's assessing the temperature based on only one room or space. It's not necessarily a Hive issue, but something to consider when thinking about where to locate your smart thermostat," she adds.

"However, the fact this one is portable does make it easier to trial it in different rooms, so you can establish which room will give you the most even temperature across your property."

If you want precise temperature control across multiple rooms, we recommend the Honeywell Home Evohome Smart Thermostat, which lets you manage up to 12 different heating zones.

The thermostat has a large touchscreen that displays the temperature of each room and the hot water, as well as a control panel. These features can also be accessed remotely via a smartphone app or through your Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT devices.

You’ll be able to set up an individual seven-day schedule for each room (including six time slots per day), which can be optimised based on the outside temperature, room temperature, and set point. Not every smart thermostat will be compatible with your heating system, so you'll need to check its suitability first. If you'd like to buy one of the models in this guide, we’ve included this information in the table below.

❌Savings depend on how you use it: "If someone simply installs a smart thermostat and leaves it running at 21 degrees all day, they won’t see much difference. It’s a tool, not a magic fix."

Being the original inventor of the window vac, it’s no surprise that Kärcher’s Window Vac WV 6 Plus is our top pick overall. This device has loads of impressive features, but the most outstanding is its 100-minute running time, which knocks the other options in this guide out of the park.

As well as the window vac itself, you’ll also receive an additional narrow suction nozzle to help you get into smaller gaps – super handy if you have panelled windows or want to get right up to the seal.

Once you’ve sucked away the condensation, you’ll also be able to give the glass a good clean, as this window vac comes with a microfibre cloth that attaches to a spray bottle – perfect for scrubbing away those pesky smears. Kärcher has also thrown in a sachet of 20ml glass-cleaning concentrate to get you started.

Priced at £85, this is more expensive than the other options in this guide, but we think it’s worth the investment thanks to its long-lasting run time, multiple attachments, and low battery indicator. If that’s too expensive for your budget, I’d recommend the Daewoo Hurricane ClearVac Window Cleaner as a good, cheaper alternative.

The best affordable window vac

Costing under £30, we were blown away by this window vac's price tag and performance when Homebuilding’s Assistant Editor, Sarah Harley, put it to the test.

After using it on her condensation-ridden windows, she was very happy with the results and said it cleared the moisture effectively: “It removes the water and leaves the window pretty much streak-free.”

While this window vac is an excellent choice for large windows, Sarah noted that it might not be the best option for multi-panel sash windows like hers, as “the blade is too large to make it as quick and easy a job as it could be.”

Weighing 900 grams, Sarah said the machine was lightweight to hold and easy to use – though it’s worth bearing in mind that the handle is smooth, with no additional grip features. It holds up to 60ml of water (significantly less than the Kärcher model), which Sarah notes can fill up quite quickly. As for the noise levels, it was louder than she had expected, given its smaller size.

She says, “The biggest learning curve when using it was discovering that you have to keep it upright the whole time you use it. The minute you start to tilt it too far, the water starts to come out of the container.

“It may be that this is the same on other models, but I had naively assumed I’d be able to twist and turn it as I needed to. It’s why using it on multi-panel windows isn’t ideal, as I’m not able to get as much into the corners as I would like.”

The best window vac cleaning kit

If you want to tackle condensation and dirty windows at the same time, the Daewoo Hurricane ClearVac Window Cleaner is the one for you. The device comes with a microfibre cloth that attaches to a spray bottle – similar to the Kärcher model, but at a fraction of the price.

This window vac has an impressive 300ml water tank capacity, which is significantly higher than the Beldray model, meaning you won't have to empty it so frequently. I love how it detaches from the base, so when you do need to clean it out, you can do so easily and quickly.

The device has a 30-minute running time and a lightweight design, making it very easy to work with. It doesn't have a grip pad, but since it has a D-shape handle, this didn't cause me any issues.

The window vac left my glass completely streak-free, and when it came to my weekly cleaning, the microfibre cloth and bottle made the job a lot easier – helping me get into the corners and reach a little farther than I usually can. You do have to go back and forth quite a bit, but I still enjoy using it and like the end result.

The best premium window vac

Unlike other window vacs we've tested, this model from Vileda offers two power modes: a lower suction setting if you want to save the battery, and a higher suction setting for when you're working with a lot of water and need to get the job done quickly. According to the brand, the ‘max’ setting offers 50% more suction than competitor products.

To find out whether it's any good, Homebuilding's former Deputy Editor, Michelle Guy, put it to the test on her single-glazed windows to see if it could get rid of the condensation.

She was impressed with its lightweight, portable design, which is easy to use on the go, and praised how quickly it removed the water. However, she warns that the ‘max’ line is there for a reason – if the liquid exceeds this level, it will start to drip out if you turn the vac to the side.

The device comes with a removable, dishwasher-friendly water tank, making it easy and convenient to clean. In terms of sound, Michelle commented that it wasn’t very noisy and comparable to the volume of a small low-voltage car vacuum.

Her favourite feature is the flexible neck, which helped her quickly reach excess water that had pooled down the frame and press harder to suck up the condensation. Compared to the Beldray model, this one worked much better when used side to side – useful to note if this is how you plan to use it (just make sure the water tank stays below the max line).

There may be cheaper options out there, but Michelle was very happy with the results and has added it to her everyday routine.

The best window vac for hard-to-reach areas

If you have hard-to-reach windows, like skylights, this Swan window vac is our top pick, as it comes with an extension pole to make the job easier. Not only does this save you from standing on a chair and risking a fall, but it also gets the job done in half the time.

As well as the vac itself and the extension pole, you'll also receive a spray bottle, a cloth holder, and two washable microfibre cloths, so you'll have everything you need to get started.

The water tank is the largest of all the options in this guide, holding 350 ml of liquid, which saves you from having to constantly empty it. The device works well on a range of surfaces, including windows, tiles, showers and oven doors, with a running time of 35 minutes from a three-hour charge. This isn't the longest option we've seen, so if you plan on doing a heavy day of cleaning, the Kärcher model will work better for you.

It's half the price of many Bosch dishwashers, for example, and just like the more expensive models, this integrated dishwasher is engineered for convenience.

It doesn't come with Wi-Fi connectivity, and it lacks other smart features such as AutoDose and SelfDry, but if you have a strict budget and just want an appliance to wash the dishes for you then this Beko dishwasher should fit the bill nicely.

The best integrated dishwasher for longevity

If you want a top-of-the-range integrated dishwasher then this offering from Miele certainly fits the bill. But, it's not cheap, so it is an investment that you want to keep with you for a long time.

As you might expect it is well-made, sturdy enough for even the heaviest of pots and pans and cleans like a dream. It has a whole host of washing programs and options including an ECO wash, Gentle wash, Intensive 75°C wash and a Maintenance wash so the machine is always clean and ready to go. What is the difference between a built-in and an integrated dishwasher?

A built-in dishwasher is fitted into a space underneath the kitchen worktop with the door still visible, whereas an integrated dishwasher is completely disguised under the kitchen worktop behind a cabinet door. If you don't want to have the door to the dishwasher visible then opt for an integrated dishwasher.

What do energy efficiency labels on integrated dishwashers mean?

In March 2021, the energy rating labels for appliances was updated. You might be used to seeing appliances rated A+++, but this scale has now changed to a simpler A–G grading.

Currently, even the most energy-efficient dishwashers on the market may only achieve a D rating. Dishwashers are energy-hungry so it would really pay to hone in on a model with a higher energy rating. "Opting for a model with an eco-setting can save you an additional 20% in energy use too."

Best compact dehumidifier

Despite being only 40cm in height, the MeacoDry Arete One 6L Compact dehumidifier packs a punch when it comes to performance. When Homebuilding’s Web Editor Amy Willis put it to the test, she was particularly impressed with how well it dried her laundry, how easily it could be moved from room to room, and how conveniently it could be placed on worktops out of the way of foot traffic.

It might have a smaller tank size than regular dehumidifiers, but you shouldn’t underestimate its power – Amy found it plenty big enough for her double-sized bedroom and helpful for tackling condensation, drying clothes and reducing humidity levels in her bathroom.

The model is quiet enough for an undisturbed night’s sleep (running at 32 dB) and comes with a free HEPA filter, allowing it to double up as an air purifier.

This dehumidifier also has excellent energy efficiency, running at 101 watts and costing around 3p per hour based on 26.35p/kWh energy pricing. When you compare it to the 12L model, which uses 151 watts, and the 25L model, which uses 67 watts, it puts into perspective how efficiently it runs considering it’s only a six-litre unit.

Best dehumidifier for drying laundry

Although the De'Longhi DEX212F 12L Tasciugo AriaDry Dehumidifier is on the more expensive side, its sleek appearance is matched by its performance when it comes to drying laundry.

Fast, surprisingly quiet and efficient at drying clothes – leaving them feeling softer than when dried on a heated airer – our tester, Sarah Harley, found that a few downsides are that it's on the heavier side (10.3kg) and doesn't have a humidity level display like some of the other models.

If you're after something more lightweight, the MeacoDry Arete One 6L Compact Dehumidifier is an excellent alternative that can also be used for laundry but weighs just 7.9kg.

However, if you live in an apartment, meaning your drying options are limited to heated airers or tumble dryers, we feel that it is definitely a purchase worth considering.

Best dehumidifier for cold rooms

The EcoAir DD2 Simple Desiccant Dehumidifier is suited to colder spaces and has a powerful, yet relatively energy-efficient, wattage. With an automatic shut-off, anti-tilt safety function and a continuous drainage outlet, our tester Amy Willis believes that it's a good option if you are looking to leave it running in spaces such as garages.

Although it doesn't show humidity readings of the space you use it in, we found it to be, nonetheless, fast, efficient and light enough to move around if you're struggling with damp in a number of areas.

It's also fairly quiet to run, operating at 37-46dBa, making it suitable to use inside if your property struggles to get warm. Amy was also impressed by its "very powerful" laundry mode which extracted moisture from the air and was easy to select on the settings.

Specifically chosen for testing in the bedroom due to its Quiet Mark rating and sleep function, we found this dehumidifier to be suitably quiet. While initially noisy when starting up, the fan quickly reduced to a low hum, making it easy to fall asleep while it works – even for light sleepers!

Best dehumidifier for garages

If you're looking for a solution for a cold, damp garage, the Meaco DD8L Pro Desiccant Dehumidifier comes highly recommended by Amy Willis. She put it to the test to see if it could prevent condensation, damp and mould from damaging her stored items in the garage, and was very impressed with the results.

One of her favourite things about this model – and a big reason why it's so good for garages – is that it comes with a wall mount to help keep it out of the way. This was particularly handy considering the dimensions were quite bulky, measuring 38cm x 36cm x 23cm.

It can extract up to eight litres of water per day and has a two-litre collection tank, as well as the option for continuous drainage. While it doesn't come with a hose, Amy says that you can fit a garden hose as an alternative.

The Meaco DD8L Pro can also be connected to your phone, allowing you to monitor the water tank and humidity levels remotely, which Amy found "useful but not essential".

It might be on the expensive side of dehumidifiers, but Amy says this model is "perfect for garages" and liked how you can tailor it to your space via the adjustable power settings. For something (slightly) more affordable, we also recommend the EcoAir DD2 Simple Desiccant Dehumidifier.

Best smart dehumidifier

There’s a lot to like about the Duux Bora 20L Dehumidifier, which features an eight-litre daily extraction, a quick-drying laundry mode and a practical, portable design. But what makes this model stand out are its advanced smart features, which let you control it remotely from your phone or voice assistant.

When Homebuilding's news editor Joseph Mullane put it to the test, he connected the dehumidifier to the Duux app, which allowed him to set up to seven schedules and track his indoor air quality. He also liked how it integrates with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for easy, hands-free control.

Smart features aside, this dehumidifier has been a “game-changer” for reducing damp in Joseph’s home, thanks to its 20-litre extraction capacity and the hygrostat, which ensures humidity levels stay perfectly monitored.

He also found this dehumidifier fantastic for drying laundry and appreciated the continuous drainage hose for easy emptying and the roller wheels that make it easy to move from room to room.

How to choose the best dehumidifier

Finding a dehumidifier that meets your needs and wants depends on the type of moisture that you’re trying to remove. A general rule of thumb is the larger the dehumidifier, the more powerful it’ll be.

According to Chris Michael, co-founder of Meaco, you'll need to consider the following factors:

1. Size of the property
You'll need to match the extraction rate to the size of the property:

• 6L: room only dehumidification 
• 10L: suitable for a small, two-bedroom flat
• 12L: recommended for a two-bedroom house
• 20L: suitable for a three-bedroom house
• 25L: recommended for properties with more than three bedrooms

2. Moisture levels
"If the property has high moisture levels due to damp issues, a high number of occupants, or regular indoor clothes drying, it’s best to choose the next size up. A more powerful model will remove moisture faster and more effectively."

3. Room temperature
"Compressor dehumidifiers perform best in heated homes, while desiccant dehumidifiers are better suited to cooler conditions, such as in a basement, conservatory or garage. The key temperature is 15°. Below this, go for desiccant, above 15°, go for compressor."

4. Energy efficiency
"Electricity consumption is an important consideration for an appliance that may run for much of the year. Models with a built-in humidistat are recommended, as they can be set to reach a target humidity level and then switch off automatically."

5. Noise levels
Be sure to check the decibel rating before investing in a dehumidifier. Models with Quiet Mark accreditation are a good choice for places like bedrooms.

6. Quality versus low-cost models
"While cheaper models may have a lower upfront cost, they are often less energy efficient and may not last as long. A higher-quality model can offer better long-term value through lower running costs and greater durability. Indicators of quality include longer warranty length, independent media reviews, and strong consumer ratings."

When won't a dehumidifier be suitable?

If your damp issue is the result of bad ventilation and lots of condensation, a dehumidifier can definitely help. That said, if damp is a persistent issue, caused by other factors concerning the structure of your home, a different and more involved solution is going to be required long term.

A dehumidifier will still help the situation but building work to fix the issue will be a better solution. Start by looking at the causes of mould in a house to help you figure out what could be the root of the problem.

How to choose the best integrated dishwasher

There are several things to consider before purchasing an integrated dishwasher, including:

Freestanding or integrated? 

If you're unsure as to whether a built-in vs freestanding dishwasher would best suit to your kitchen, here's some of the key comparisons. Freestanding units are generally no wider than 60cm and are positioned just below your kitchen worktop. Integrated models tend to sit behind a façade that matches your kitchen cupboards. Slimline models are available too for smaller kitchens. 

Both tend to have multiple wash cycles (including eco wash settings), and while integrated dishwashers permanently live in your kitchen space, the only downside would be if you had to move out. Integrated dishwashers also offer a sleek, aesthetic benefit and help to maximise the space in your kitchen.

Speed settings

Speed can be particularly important for families, for example, because knowing how quickly a wash will take can be invaluable on school nights. It can also be useful to ensure you are economical with your washes.

Noise

Look at a dishwasher's noise as louder models may wake up younger children, or interrupt you while you're relaxing during the evening.

Capacity

What do energy efficiency labels mean now

In March 2021 the energy efficiency labels underwent an overhaul. This means whereas you've likely seen dishwashers, fridges and washing machines classed as A+++, this is no longer the case. The new energy ratings for appliances  rank only from A-G. 

However, the most efficient dishwashers on the market currently have a D rating, so a product with an E/F rating will still be classed as energy efficient.

These changes are designed to push manufacturers to meet tighter restrictions to achieve the top energy rating, and ultimately is good news for consumers. 

The energy ratings for dishwashers are calculated by how much water they use compared to the amount of energy they consume over 100 cycles. This is tested using an Eco 40-60 cycle.

Best overall hand sander for wood

This is a well-built hand sander with a large handle that leaves plenty of room to get your hands around. This makes it a good choice for those with large hands, or those who want to wear heavy duty gloves to protect their hands when working.

The sander has a DuraSoft handle, which means it is relatively soft to the touch, but is still strong, comfortable and provides plenty of grip. A flexible aluminium backing plate is bonded to a 245 x 85mm foam pad which gives you slightly more sanding surface than most hand sanders. The unit is nicely weighted and feels like real quality in the hand.

Strong metal clamps are neatly integrated into the handle and use neat little handles that are easy to tighten and ensure that any sandpaper stays put when sanding.

Best hand sander with pre-cut sandpaper

Finding sandpaper that fits the pad of a manual hand sander isn’t always easy. You can buy standard-sized sandpaper sheets and cut them to fit, but this often results in waste and can be frustrating. This BLOSTM Sanding Block Sander set deals with the problem by including 48 pieces of pre-cut sandpaper that fit perfectly on the 230mm x 90mm sanding pad.

However, you get a selection of sandpaper grades from 120 - 7000, which will leave you with a lot of super fine sheets that aren’t much use for general DIY. On the plus side, you can buy brand-specific replacement sheets, but you still face the same problem.

The sandpaper that comes with the block does a decent job, and the sheets are easy to fix to the block thanks to its spring-loaded clamps. However, the hand sander's build quality doesn’t match that of some of the more robust offerings in this guide.

Best budget hand sander for wood

If you want a solid hand sander built by a reputable brand that can tackle the toughest of jobs when sanding wood, then this offering from Stanley has to be high on your list. Not only does it have a strong ribbed aluminium body and a comfortable rubber grip that gives users good grip and control, it's also one of the cheapest in this buying guide.

It has a 230mm x 80mm pad that is slightly smaller than most hand sanders, but the difference in size isn’t a big deal. Standard size sandpaper sheets can be cut to fit with little or no waste, or you can opt for slightly more expensive specialist sanding sheets, but these aren’t always easy to find in your local hardware store.

Alternatively, you can use a sanding mesh like this ProDec Advance 120 Grit Sanding Mesh from Amazon. But again, you will need to cut to fit. But fitting is easy thanks to its lift and grip clamps. No need to worry about unscrewing and screwing nuts, with this style clamp it's done in half the time.

Best hand sanding block

If you're looking for a tool for more subtle hand sanding, a hand held sanding block is a top choice. They typically have a smaller sanding surface and are shaped to fit into the palm of the hand, and this is exactly what you get with this Bosch Professional Hand Sanding Block.

The 160 x 85 mm pad means that it is easier to control, but doesn’t cover as much area, which makes it ideal for finishing jobs on smaller or more intricate faces such as when sanding doors and tackling panelled designs. The square edges will also make it good for getting into corners.

The grip is good, but not as good as a regular hand sander like the Marshalltown 20 Hand Sander, meaning it's not such a good choice for heavy duty sanding. But it can double up as a wall sander for rubbing down small filled cracks. The lever mechanism to secure the sandpaper works well, but the constant back and forth motion can eventually cause the screws holding it in place to come loose.

Best radial hand sander for wood

If you don’t fancy getting up a ladder to sand down a surface, then this radial sander could be just what you need. Radial sanders have a round sanding pad, which you attach to a pole giving you access to hard to reach areas.

This radial sander has a large 23cm diameter which works well on its central pivot point. The shape means it distributes the power you put in evenly and doesn’t suddenly divert somewhere you don't want it to go.

A hook and loop system – like velcro – ensures that sandpaper is secure and won't fall off the pad when in use. Unlike standard hand sanders, you can get readily available sandpaper discs that fit perfectly on the pad. Designed to work on drywall, it works just as well when sanding floorboards, but one drawback is its circular shape, meaning you can’t get into corners, so will need another tool to finish the job.

Best hand sander for floors and walls

Say goodbye to ladders, and say hello to quick sanding of large areas without getting a backache or neck ache. This sander head is effectively a standard hand sander without the handle. Instead it has a 360 degree omnidirectional swivel bracket that needs to be attached to a telescopic extension pole. The larger the extension pole the higher or further you can reach.

The head can be hard to control as it easily swivels in every direction and the pole occasionally comes loose. But once you mastered the action, the head works well and neatly gets into corners. The pad is very similar in size to standard hand sanders so you will struggle to find sandpaper that's an exact fit. So, instead, simply cut up standard sheets of sandpaper and this will prove to be a very useful addition for sanding floors and walls.

How to choose the best hand sander for wood

When on the lookout for a hand sander you need to consider what you want to use it for. Is it going to just be wood such as doors and sanding skirting boards? Or are you looking to use it on wooden floors and hard to reach areas? And, is it easy to get sandpaper to fit?

What type of hand sander do I need?

For general purpose hand sanding you are best using a standard hand sander like the Stanley 230mm x 80mm Hand Sander. This is ideal for tackling finishing jobs on wood with large flat areas, tougher paint removal tasks and edges on floors.

A sanding block does a very similar job, but is more suited to smaller finishing jobs and it's not so well suited to tougher tasks. A pole sander is a good choice for finishing floors or hard to reach areas, and can double up as a wall sander.

Size of pad

Hand sanders come in different sizes, so it's important to note the size when buying sandpaper. The pad size doesn’t vary greatly on standard hand sanders, but smaller pads will be 230mm x 80mm, while larger pads can be longer and wider.

Standard sandpaper sheets are 280mm x 230mm, which means you can cut to fit. You can just about get three sheets out of a single sheet on 80mm wide hand sanders. On larger sanders you will get two. Alternatively, you can buy sanding block sandpaper which typically fits all size sanders, but usually costs more.

Handle and grip

Standard hand sanders have a grip that’s easy to get your hand around and can accommodate most hand sizes. This gives you plenty of control for jobs that need fine sanding like rubbing down new wooden doors. But they are also good for tougher jobs such as removing paint as you can grab the handle tightly. Also consider the material of the handle, i.e does it have a rubber grip to get a secure hold of the handle.

Sanding blocks and pole sanders are slightly different. You need a sanding block that fits neatly into your hand to get a good grip so if you have small or large hands you won’t get as much control. Pole sanders attach to a pole so you need to make sure that you get a handle that fits the sander head and one with a good rubber grip for greater control.

What clamps does the sander have?

There’s effectively two choices of clamps, and both have their pros and cons. There’s the hand sanders with a wing nut which you need to unscrew, add your sandpaper and tighten on both ends each time. But this ensures you can get a strong fit.

Other hand sanders have lift and grab clamps which are easier to use, but you have no control over the grip of the sandpaper, and after a while they lose their holding strength.

If you’re hanging TVs, radiators, or shelves on plasterboard, you'll need the best plasterboard fixings to ensure they stay in place. Choose the wrong fixing, and you could be heading for disaster. No one wants to see their brand new big screen TV take a nose-dive or a shelf collapse under the weight of their favourite books.

Plasterboard isn’t as strong or secure as fixing into masonry. There is less to work with, which means it will struggle to hold heavier loads. This is where plasterboard fixings, specifically designed for the job, come into play.

Here, we look at a range of plasterboard fixings that provide heavy-duty solutions, quick, easy-to-install options, and budget-friendly alternatives.

The Quick List

Best all round plasterboard fixing

Toggle bolts – also known as spring toggle fixings amongst other names – are a popular and easy to install plasterboard fixing. They consist of a screw and a set of wings which are spring loaded. They open up after being pushed through a drilled hole then you simply need to tighten.

This set from Glarks is reasonably priced, well built and contains a selection of popular and commonly used sizes allowing you to choose the right one for the job at hand. Depending on what size you choose a toggle bolt can happily hold around 30Kg, more if you choose a larger size. But you need to take note of the screw length. These come in various sizes and you'll need one that fits a cavity to get a tight fit.

Best large heavy duty plasterboard fixing

If you’ve got something really heavy to hang on plasterboard – or hardboard, plywood, MDF – then this extra large hollow anchor fixing is a great choice. The manufacturer claims a load capacity of up to 270 kg, but we don’t have anything that heavy to test it with. But it can easily accommodate heavy items, such as a radiator or a large TV.

However, these are the most expensive plasterboard fixings in this guide, and while not difficult to install, they do take a little longer to get used to. It takes a bit of wiggling to get into place in small cavities, and in some cases, it's far more than you'll need.

To install, drill a 25mm hole to get started, then thread a cord through two small holes in the fixing. This helps keep the fixing from sinking into a cavity, and two small teeth are embedded in the back of the board to prevent movement. Then a large screw and 25mm plug bring everything together before adding two more small screws to hold the plug in place. Now you’re ready to go.

Best budget plasterboard fixing

If you are looking for a cost-effective solution that can tackle most everyday hanging jobs, then these hollow wall anchors are the answer. They are produced by a myriad of manufacturers with slightly different designs and come in a range of sizes. This makes them very common, versatile and cheap.

They are easy to install – drill a hole, push the anchor into it (you might need a setting tool for easier insertion), tighten, then remove the screw, ready to put up the fixing.

One thing you will need to make sure that you are getting the right size. If you are drilling into 12.5mm plasterboard, you need a hollow wall anchor with a collar that matches that size. Get one too big, and it won’t hold. Loads are dependent on size, but you can expect a fixing for a 12.5mm plasterboard to hold at least 30kg.

Here, we have chosen standard hollow wall anchors that should fit your plasterboard. But check the thickness of your board; you might need a larger one if it's thicker.

Best for shallow cavities

If you’ve got a heavy load that needs fixing but you only have a narrow cavity to work with then these Gripit fixings are a quick to install option that can be reused if needed. Available in a variety of sizes and colours, the Gripit range claims to handle loads from 20 kg to 113 kg.

To make selection easier, each colour gives a recommendation on what it is good for. But note that, as a general rule, the upper loads are tested on thicker plasterboards and use more than one fixing to spread the load.

You will need to drill an 18-25mm hole to insert the fixing, but this is nice and simple. Push the fixing into the hole and use a screwdriver to open the wings. These are flat, which makes them good for narrow cavities. Don’t panic if you drill and fix in the wrong place; you can simply close the wings and pull out the fixing, ready to use again. But they are not always the easiest to hide on small fittings.

Best for quick installation

Need a quick fix for hanging a picture, or for installing a light switch or plug socket in plasterboard without any drilling? Then you need a self-drilling plasterboard fixing. These are the perfect solution for quick installation of a fitting.

You simply mark where you want the screw to go, get a screwdriver and screw in the fixing. Just make sure you don’t over-tighten, as you can compromise the integrity of the plasterboard. As soon as that happens, the fixing will need to be removed and placed elsewhere.

But these fixings are not a good choice for heavy loads, they are very much for light loads, in reality less than 10 kg. If you’ve got a nice new, big-screen TV, try a different plasterboard fixing.

Best plasterboard fixing repair kit

If your current plasterboard fixings have failed, this repair kit is a top choice for quickly fixing them. Included in the set are a 20mm flat spade bit, four heavy-duty fixings, and a metal drill guide to help ensure clean holes for the plasterboard fixing.

They are really simple to install with the included tools. Simply remove the old fixing, drill a new hole with the supplied bit and guide, add the collar and fixing, and screw the object in.

They are designed for smaller cavities, typically found behind dot-and-dab plasterboard. You’ll never need to worry if the wings have fully opened thanks to the Bullfix design. You won’t be able to screw into the fixing until the wings are fully open.

It can handle loads up to 116 kg on 12.5mm plasterboard, but less on 9.5mm board. This makes it a good choice for kitchen cabinets, shelves, bathroom suites and radiators.

How to choose plasterboard fixings

The type of plasterboard fixing you need depends on what you are putting up on the plasterboard. If it's something small and lightweight, like a shelf that will hold pictures or other lightweight objects you can use a basic plasterboard fixing. However, if you want to add books to a shelf, you will need a different type of fixing.

Check the weight limits

The most obvious thing to do when purchasing plasterboard fixings is to check the claimed weight limit. This helps determine whether the fix is suitable for the task at hand. It makes sense that if you are installing an object that weighs 30 kg, you don’t use a fixing with a 10 kg weight limit.

But there are a few caveats when choosing. First, check the manufacturer's guide/instructions to note how the fixing should be used. For example, if the claimed limit is 80kg, you might need four fixings evenly spaced to support that weight. And, they may not be recommended for certain types of objects, such as tilt-and-swivel TV brackets.

Look for cavity depth

Lightweight fixings typically fit directly into the plasterboard, but heavy-duty or more sturdy plasterboard fixings commonly have wings that open behind the plasterboard to provide added strength. As a general rule, the higher the weight limit, the larger the fixing.

So you need to check the size, or more precisely, the depth of the fixing to make sure that it will fit. Typically, dot-and-dab plasterboard has a smaller cavity than plasterboard on timber frames. To judge the depth of the cavity, drill into the plasterboard and note when the bit hits resistance. Take away 12.5mm for the plasterboard to help determine an approx depth and decide if the fixing you want will fit.

The Makita is a cordless finish sander that is great for sanding horizontal surfaces where it’s not easy to get mains power. It has very impressive battery life with a fast charging time of 45 minutes. Even better if you intend to buy more tools that use the same battery platform. 

While it's great on wood metal and plastic, it's not a lightweight sander and if you need to do a lot of overhead sanding, e.g ceilings, then you want to consider another model in this guide.

We were also impressed by the dust bag and its ability to capture dust. Although this model is aimed at experienced DIYers and professionals, its simple operation means it can also be used successfully by beginners.

Ryobi's cordless orbital sander offering is a great starter for the home DIYer. With a cordless 18V battery, it's not as high-powered as some mains-powered sanders, but it's powerful enough for the majority of jobs you'd need an orbital sander for. 

The built-in filtration system is important for capturing fine dust generated by using an orbital sander, but we'd still suggest using a mask and goggles when operating in a confined space. The velcro system for attaching sanding pads is easy to use, making changing between sandpaper grits quick and simple.

You might think an orbital sander needs to be round, but that's not the case. Bosch's PSS 250 AE has a long rectangular sanding plate, which can help make tasks where you need to get into corners easier than a circular plate.

What is an orbital sander?

An orbital sander doesn't just refer to a sander that is circular, as not all orbital sanders are, but rather one that moves in miniscule circular motions without rotating. 

The majority of modern orbital sanders are referred to as 'random' orbital sanders. Where a traditional orbital sanders just moves in circles, a random sand moves up and down too, helping to reduce swirl patterning in the wood as a result of using the sander. 

What jobs is an orbital sander suitable for?

A decorator might use an orbital sander for walls to even out uneven plastering, using a fine grit of sandpaper. It can also be used in between coats of plaster, with a very fine grit sandpaper, for a smoother, even finish. 

An orbital sander is also used to sand down wood. If you’re putting a worktop in, for example, and it’s a bit rough, or if you put a joint in with a small discrepancy of half a mm or so, an orbital sander is perfect for making right.  

An orbital sander can also be used to strip paint off, and is particularly useful when renovating a house with architraves and skirtings covered in layers of gloss paint. Use a high grit and you’ll be able to strip this wood back, ready for your primer and undercoat. 

Orbital sanders aren't suited to large surface areas of wood — a belt sander has a large surface of sandpaper so will be a lot quicker to use. 

A orbital sander can't be used to cut objects, and it won’t polished up concrete or screed — it’s purely for timber and the likes of filler and plaster. 

What should you look out for when buying one? 

When you look to buy one, look for dust extraction. You have different kinds of filters, and some have a hose that can be fitted to an extraction unit. As it produces a very fine dust, you don’t really want to breathe that in. Check you have a good filter system, or an extraction point you can connect a hose to. 

For cordless models, look for a high AH rated battery and always opt for two batteries and one charger — if you’re using it for a whole day, one battery won’t last. 

Sandpaper-wise, you should look for clog-free velcro sandpaper. You can get ones that don’t have the holes, but these are more likely to clog up and make it more difficult for the pads to stick to the orbital sander. 

Also consider whether a guiding handle is useful for the task in hand. A lot of them don’t have this feature but with this you can guide the sander a lot better, rather than just having your palm on it. 

How much maintenance does an orbital sander need?

With the fine dust, orbital sanders can get clogged up internally. Look for something that can blast it with air to clean it. 

Change the filters regularly to check they’re working. If you’ve got an extraction unit, make sure that you check that’s not clogged too. Give it a bit more maintenance than  power tools such as a combi drill or an angle grinder.

There are three types of power your lawn mower can run on: petrol, corded (electric) and (battery-powered), and all come with their pros and cons.

Petrol lawn mowers are generally much more powerful than their counterparts, which means faster completion times, and because they are mostly self-propelled, they are easy to start and to use.

Because of their power, petrol lawn mowers are also more suited to cutting medium-to-large gardens, whereas cordless and corded mowers are better for smaller lawns. Petrol mowers aren't constrained by power cords either, even those that offer an electric start as this is powered by a battery, rather than via the mains.

How do I choose the best petrol lawnmower?

These are some factors to consider when buying the best petrol mower to ensure you get the best value for your money and the most optimal machine for your garden.

Size of lawn

This should be a primary consideration. Because the cutting widths of mowers will differ, some mowers will be more effective on larger gardens than on smaller gardens, and vice versa.

Before you buy, make a rough estimation of how many square metres (sqm) of your lawn will need to be maintained: if your garden is between 50-150sqm then this is generally considered to be small to medium, while more than 150sqm is considered large.

The best for battery run time

The DeWalt DCD796 is a compact 18V cordless, brushless drill/driver/hammer drill that will suit every task.

It comes with a huge 5Ah battery that has a great run-time of around nine hours, depending on your task of choice (you can use a smaller battery to reduce the weight of the tool if necessary). The battery charges in 75 minutes and the battery technology optimises power to help you complete jobs quickly.

The drill offers 13 torque settings. Garry reviewed this one too and he found that drilling in to various materials (steel, wood, masonry etc) was "straightforward". It has an excellent quality, single-piece, all-metal chuck capable of supporting drill bits from 1.5mm to 13mm in size, and can drill up to 13mm in steel, 13mm in masonry, and 40mm in wood. It also has three modes of LED work light. Garry shared: "so long as you use the correct bits and the correct approach to drilling, the DCD796 isn't going to let you down."

Similarly to the Makita DHP458Z, DeWalt 18V batteries are compatible with the whole DeWalt XR suite of tools, so if you already own something from the range, the bare version of this drill would be a cost-effective choice.

The Ryobi RID1801M ONE+ Impact Driver is a tool for your wish list if you're looking for a solid, straightforward impact driver.

Our reviewer, Steve Jenkins, found that it had a decent battery life and plenty of torque for the DIY jobs that other cordless drills would have struggled with. Steve had great success using 120mm screws with this impact driver to secure fence panels to wooden posts, and when using 100mm screws when drilling into masonry although an extra drill bit had to be bought separately for this.

Torque

As a rough guide, 4-15Nm will be fine for small screw driving tasks like hanging up pictures; 15-30Nm will be suitable for drilling holes and driving in medium-size screws; and 30Nm and above is advised for tackling heavy duty jobs and materials.

Voltage

Voltage works in a similar way. You'd only likely want anything below 18V for very light-duty screw driving tasks, whereas anything above is likely to meet most homeowners' needs.

Battery

Cordless drills don't all come as the same, so keep a look out for the following when it comes to the battery:

Batteries are available with various capacities, allowing you to use lighter, lower capacity (Ah) batteries when keeping the weight of the tool down is important, or heavier, higher capacity batteries when you want to achieve the maximum run-time between charges. Two or more batteries are ideal, so you can have one in use and one on charge at all times.

What are the different types of cordless drill?

There are five types of drill that you need to know about as a DIYer because each of them will help you in different ways.

• Drill driver. These are designed for making holes in wood, laminate, plastics and interior walls. Some may also screw in screws, but not as well as an impact drill driver. They are one of the smaller and more affordable drill types.
• An impact driver. You can drive-in screws with one of these, but not drill holes. They're ideal for use on wood where drilling isn't required such as decking, framework and studwork.
• Then there's the combi drill. This drill type is perfect for DIYers. It can drill a hole and screw in screws, too. You'll see that there is a lot of choice but opt for a good one and you'll be able to use it on other materials than just wood.
• Hammer drills will make holes in masonry, stone and concrete. They use a hammer action which is (really) noisy, and the tool itself is often a lot heavier.
• And for anything heavy-duty you'll want an SDS drill. The Slotted Drive System (SDS) is a unique design that allows the drill bit to move back and forth for a strong hammer action. It can be used on concrete, brick and masonry.

What does brushless mean on a drill?

The difference between a brushed motor and a brushless motor can set you back £40-£50 – but it's worth paying the extra to get a brushless drill.

Brushed motors sit in the drill and require small metal brushes to work with magnets to convert electricity into power. When they break, you have to replace them.

Brushless drills meanwhile have an electronic circuit board and a sensor to do the same thing. Not only do you not have to worry about replacing them, but brushless drills are more energy-efficient because no energy is lost through friction from the brushes.

What drill feature and accessories do you need?

If your deal of choice includes batteries and a charger then that's extremely handy. If, however, you are only looking to buy the bare model, then make sure you get two batteries and a charger: one battery so you can use your drill right away, and the other battery for charging while you're working.

If the K7 is outside of your budget, then the next best premium Kärcher pressure washer is the K4 - a good all-rounder which effective blasts through larger patios and driveways. 

The K4 comes with a vario power spray lance, a dirt blaster spray lance and a surface cleaner brush, and the tools can be stored on board. It also has a retractable handle for increased convenience when storing it away. 

It's slightly less powerful than the K7, and comes with a smaller hose, but it is very effective - especially if you're looking for a pressure washer you don't want to use that often. 

Notably, it's also very quiet. And you'll appreciate this benefit during longer cleaning jobs. The only criticism is that it's quite bulky, making it harder to carry around.

The Kärcher OC3 Portable Cleaner is brilliant for those who love spending time in the great outdoors. It is a cordless and compact option you can use at home to clean down your bike or muddy boots (or the muddy dog) after a walk, and you can take it in the car for quick washes after a hike. 

It won't be suitable for cleaning stubborn dirt out of your driveway, but that isn't the point of this washer. It's designed for quick and easy jobs, utilising effective gentle pressure that's perfect for a quick rinse of dirty clothing or objects. 

Plus, it utilises on-board storage for the spiral hose and trigger gun under the removable water tank, so it's easy to transport. 

The K2 Compact is Kärcher's best budget pick, and despite lacking some of the power and features of the other pressure washers in this list, its 110 bar pressure is effective on both delicate surfaces such as your car, or harder surfaces such as brickwork. 

This is Kärcher's smallest and cheapest pressure washer, but it's excellent value for money. It comes with a trigger gun, hose and lance which can all be neatly stored on the machine, and an integrated suction tube allows detergent to be applied to any surface being cleaned.

How to choose the best Kärcher pressure washer

Kärcher is a leading brand so whichever machine you opt for will deliver high-quality results, but these are some considerations to make before making your purchase.

Cost

If budget isn't a factor, then K7 is one of the most supreme machines available and well worth investing in. The K2 Full Control Pressure Washer is more cost-friendly but offers fantastic value for money.

Usage

If you only plan to use your pressure washer once in a while on small jobs, like cleaning brickwork or bikes, then a cheaper model such as the K2 Full Control Pressure Washer or Kärcher K4 Full Control Home Pressure Washer will do the job. But for regular, bigger jobs, the K7 will offer the best results. 

Pressure

Despite being slightly heavier than some other models, this machine is still easy to move around as you take on grass and weeds. “When considering which cordless grass trimmer is right for you, there are lots of things to consider. Taking care of your garden should be easy, so comfort is crucial," says Julie Blades, Global Product Manager at Flymo.

She outlines the key considerations below:

• Weight: Make sure you know how much the trimmer weighs so that you can hold it for as long as you need. Typically, a cordless trimmer should be around 2kg for comfortable use, but you know your own strength best. 
• Size: If you have lots of intricate areas you need to cut into, a smaller cutting width of up to 23cm would be best. But if your priority is covering distance, a larger cutting width of up to 30cm might suit you best. An adjustable shaft length and handles can help you get every angle you need to trim your borders effortlessly, minimising aches and pains.
• Voltage: The thicker the patch of lawn you’re trying to tackle, the more voltage you’ll need to cut through. For the majority of gardens, an 18V grass trimmer will be sufficient to keep edges tidy and precise. However, if you’re working with denser, thicker grass and weeds consider a model with a power boost function. 
• Running time: Corded and petrol strimmers work on continuous power, but cordless strimmers will require charging, and it can pay to investigate how long a model takes to charge – some take as little as an hour or two; others up to five. Any batteries of 36V are generally suitable for medium and low-level gardening tasks like trimming long grass, but for larger tasks and heavy duty strimming you'll probably need a more powerful battery.

If you have flowers bordering your lawn, a built-in plant guard can ensure you don’t accidentally cut any petals. Can you use a strimmer on wet grass?

"Can I cut wet grass?" It is a question often asked by gardeners keen to keep their gardens looking neat and tidy – even in the unpredictable British weather. But is the advice the same when it comes to strimming?

While strimming wet grass once in a while shouldn't cause too much in the way of damage to your lawn, or your machine, you should definitely leave any waterlogged areas well alone. How do you edge a lawn with a strimmer?

How to choose the best radiator

There are several factors to consider when choosing radiators which go beyond just setting a budget.

1. Calculate the BTU (British Thermal Unit):
“All radiators have a specified heat output so once you know how much heat the room needs you can choose the type, size and style to suit your taste and the room,” says energy-efficiency expert Tim Pullen.

2. Measure up:
The size of radiator can impact the heat output, and you'll find that some manufacturers offer different sizes in their radiator designs. If, however, you’re stuck for space or simply prefer to be without radiators, skirting board heating is a discreet, space-saving alternative.

3. Consider the location, weight and preferred eco-credentials:
Colours and materials can also vary between radiators so you'll need to consider these three things. Steel or cast iron radiators are mega heavy so consider the wall type they will be mounted on, and who will be installing a radiator.

“Aluminum options are usually the most effective in terms of efficiency and they are the ‘greenest’ in terms of their manufacture,” explains Dave Thornback, UK Sales Manager at Vasco. “Added to the fact that they can be completely recycled at the end of their life.”

4. Choose your design:
You can have a lot of fun choosing the size and shape of a rad, but just be mindful to ensure you're going to be achieving the desired heat output for the space.

5. Set a budget:
After considering all this you can narrow down you search and set a budget, or think about how much you are prepared to pay. The cost of radiators can run into the thousands-of-pounds so it would be prudent to weigh up all of the factors above with how many new radiators you need, before heading to the check out.

What is a BTU?

Design and budget are foremost factors, but in order to choose the best radiator for your room, you will need to determine the heat requirements of the space.

Room sizes, window dimensions and even the materials used in the walls will all be used to calculate the required outputs of the radiators you will need to heat the room properly.

You will notice that radiators have a 'BTU rating'. BTUs are ‘British Thermal Units’ and this is the unit in which radiator efficiency is measured.
