Read the full story of Inverdart Boathouse in Devon, the winner of the Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Awards 2013, and witness award winning design.

Every year our judges trek the length and breadth of the country in search of Britain’s best self build homes. This year we saw some amazing feats of design and engineering, with highlights including a climbing wall, an intriguing mirrored home and a cantilevered bedroom — but to name a few.

It was Inverdart Boathouse in Devon that really caught the eye of the judges. A 14 year (and counting) battle to build a remarkable castle style home – clinging to a cliff face – shows the passion and dedication that David and Annette have put into their project. They have truly shown what can be acheived when you choose to build your own home.

The judges have also chosen winners in a further 11 categories which encapsulate the various motives and achievements of self builders. We can also announce that Cranham Lodge is the winner of the Readers’ Choice Award which we invited you to vote for in October. Many thanks to all who voted and commented.
