It’s been described as a little piece of Chelsea lost in Devon, thanks to its state-of-the-art fixtures and fittings, but originally Ashbury Mill was an 18th century sawmill built to serve the 14,000- acre Ashbury estate near Okehampton, and when property developer Geoff Jacobs found it two years ago it was in a state of dereliction. “All that was left were four partwalls, a colossal pine beam which had once carried the steam saw machinery and a corrugated iron roof,” he recalls.

The walls were originally built from stone quarried from the estate and bricks handmade in the estate’s own brickworks. Now the mill, originally some 200m² in floor area, has evolved into a two storey dwelling with an internal floor area of around 550m², by dint of raising the elevation by four feet to accommodate the rooms upstairs.
