Judging Begins on Britain's Premier Self-build Awards Scheme

As final judging begins on The Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Awards 2009, make sure you log on to www.selfbuildawards.co.uk for live Twitter feeds, blogs and films of Britain’s best houses. 

This week (w/c 21st September 2009) marks the start of the final judging process in The Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Awards, Britain’s premier competition to find the best recently completed self-builds, renovations and conversions. 

The four judges – consisting of property TV programme presenter, expert and author Michael Holmes, property journalist Angela Pertusini, founder and Managing Director of Homebuilding & Renovating, Peter Harris and the magazine’s longstanding editor, Jason Orme – will be hitting the road this week and next to meet the owners of the 15 shortlisted projects in person. All four are experienced self-builders and renovators. 

“Seeing the homes up close and personal is the only way to properly judge how successful they are,” says judge Jason Orme. “This isn’t just an architectural competition – a successful project must be of an exceptional design standard, but we’re also interested in how the house meet’s the owner’s needs and how it has transformed their life. After all, that’s the essence of self-build.” 

The Awards, now in their 17th year, and sponsored this year by the Government’s Planning Portal website, aim to recognise the achievement of the nation’s 100,000+ strong army of self-builders, renovators and barn converters.  

This year the Awards is at the forefront of innovation. Anyone looking to see the latest in house design should visit the dedicated website, www.selfbuildawards.co.uk, where they will be able to see films of all 15 homes and vote to pick this year’s Overall Winner, in addition to seeing live updates from the judging process.
