I'm getting in quotes to finish off a barn conversion. Some of the electricians I'm talking to are saying that there must be a smoke / fire detecting system fitted to the mains. Is this correct? I've looked into the documents from planing portal but don't know how to interpret them.

The project is a conversion rather than a new build and the planning and building regs were approved in 2005 if that makes any difference.

We're trying to keep costs down so would rather fit battery powered smoke alarms – especially as we plan to take the house off-grid in time.

Hello Bruce,

Mains Powered Smoke detectors are required under Buldig Regulations, If they are not you may struggle to get conversion signed off.
