Does anyone know how much it would cost to move a brick-built garage back by about 6ft with asbestos in the roof!

Julie,
I take it you mean move the garage as in american style move the entire building. Although theoretically possible I have never heard of it happening in this country. Most of the buildings moved in the states are in fact timber framed houses which are fairly easy to transport. I am afraid that if you want to move your garage it will need demolishing and rebuilding to new lines. This will entail new or extended foundations and floor slab. Not impossible although your asbestos roof would need investigation to see if it was safe to re-use...I doubt that it would.
The best demolition/asbestos company I have found are Smiths of Gloucester www.smiths-gloucester.co.uk ask for Paul Beeston. Again I doubt if any of the materials from the original garage would be re-usable unless the brickwork was built in lime mortar which would make the bricks salvagable. Allow about £800 m2 to cost out a new garage to modern standards. At least if it was rebuilt you could make it more useful to your needs.

I would just be demolished and re-built. I don't know if you would have trouble matching the brick though, if it matches your house's brick. And Asbestos is really dangerous stuff and isn't used anymore. It would be better for your health and safety to have the new insulation once it is re build. Whether it is batt insulation or rigid. Both are a lot more safe.
