Why we chose our construction method

Timber frame, masonry or otherwise, your choice of build system will have little impact on your home’s appearance — but it will affect just about everything else. These self builders explain why they chose the systems they did.

Why we chose our construction method

"It was the simplest option."
H&R Editor, Jason Orme, and his wife, Sarah, built with masonry for its universal appeal and simplicity(MAIN IMAGE)

Jason and Sarah’s decision was largely convenience based: “Masonry was just the simplest option,“ says Jason. “The package company we used specialised in masonry construction which was also the system our builder understood — that was critical. Rightly or wrongly, we also wanted the feeling of solidity and silence that this system offers, particularly for the internal partitions upstairs.” Read more about this project.

"We craved instant charm"
Richard and Sheila Hope chose a green oak frame for their traditional-style self-build

“We loved the idea of building with oak,” says Richard of his and wife, Sheila’s, new home. “Our weatherboarded barn-style design perfectly suits the site.” The couple chose oak for its inherent ability to create instant character wherever it is used, and ensured interiors were kept pared down to allow the frame to dominate. “Every room in the house features some kind of talking point,” smiles Richard. "We wanted it built fast!"
Steve and Becky Kestin built their home using SIPs, for increased energy efficiency and speed

Steve and Becky wanted to build their house as green and quickly as possible, so they opted for SIPs (structural insulated panels). “When we discovered how fast the shell could be built and how well insulated the house would be we approached Build It Green, a specialist in SIPs,” says Steve. 3D computer models gave the Kestins a detailed understanding of how their home would be built, and the structure was erected in just a month. Catherine and Donald self-built in order to gain a family home on limited funds. To stick to their tight budget of £150,000 they had to carry out a huge amount of DIY — incl uding building the off-site-manufactured timber frame kit. “I saved £12,000 on the frame by constructing it myself,” beams Donald.
