Using Curtains and Blinds to Get Picture Perfect Windows

There are five key factors which can transform the look of your home and enhance the beauty of your rooms, giving you picture perfect windows using curtains or blinds - whatever your interior design style. This advertisement feature from Terrys Fabrics explains how window dressings can enhance your room.

The window dressings you choose for your home can make or break the overall look of a room.

There are numerous styles and designs of window treatments which can be used, however, you will need to ensure that your choice not only complements the style of your home but also your décor.

There are five key factors which can transform the look of your home and enhance the beauty of your rooms, giving you picture perfect windows whatever your interior design style.

  1. The most important factor to consider is ensure you keep your window treatments in proportion to the room. Full length curtains add height to a room and offer an elegant and refined look. Short curtains, those which sit on the edge of the window sill, can look skimpy, however, if you choose a bold colour or pattern the eye will be drawn away from the length and to the centre of the panel. Be particularly careful when selecting blinds.
  2. Adding glamour to plain fabrics is a cost effective way to give a new look to your windows and rooms. If you have a patterned wallpaper pick out the background colour for your curtains as this will give a sense of cohesion to the room. Use beaded hold-backs in a contrasting colour to brighten plain or voile curtains. This can look stunning if you match the beads to one of the accent colours in the wallpaper. If you use curtain poles you can also change the end finials to coordinate with your new colours, look for the latest hand blown glass finials in the same colours and tones as the hold backs to create a sense of balance and harmony.
  3. Adopt the latest interior design themes by double layering your curtains. Layer two contrasting colours and fabrics to create a luxurious look, sweep open from the centre and hold in place with ornate tie-backs for a more opulent look. Say goodbye to net curtains and layer a patterned fabric with a plain sheer fabric which lets natural light filter through during the day and also gives you the privacy you need.
  4. Dress large windows or bay windows with a splash of colour to stop them from looking too bare. Double layer with a combination of Roman blinds and swathes of curtains to make a real show stopper and focal point of your room.
  5. Remember passers-by will see your window dressing from the outside, therefore having your curtains lined can provide the same colours on the outside of your home and enable you to use any colour and pattern you wish on the inside!

Don't be tempted to scrimp on the amount of curtain fabric to save money. Your home and windows will look picture perfect if you opt for a less expensive, yet high quality fabric, which is plentiful and fits the windows properly.
