Project Managers

Does anyone out there have experience of contracting with a professional project manager.

I am interested in the form of contract agreed and the duties which the project manager undertook thereunder.

Dear Simon

I have been scanning the HB&R web site and noticed your question regarding the engagement of a project manager.

I am a project manager, I set up specifically to assist self builders in the south west (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset ). I am more than happy to discuss how we contract and the scope of work we undertake. Our web site sets out in brief our various packages and scopes from full management (client chooses aesthetics and we do everything else) to a supported management package where we visit the site and provide technical and commercial support. The range of options is too wide to set out within this response so please feel free to visit our site and call me with any questions.

Warm regards

I also have a project management consultancy operating in the Cambridgeshire, Essex, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Suffolk Counties and offer a flexible service to accommodate your specific requirements. Again the areas involved are extensive, you can check us out on HB&R products and services page and follow the leads to our website at www.c2cprojectmanagement.com I will be happy to answer any queries you may have that are not answered on our website.

Hello Nogs
There are no specific qualifications for Project Managers in construction. There are courses and associations (Prince2 and Association for Project Management) but these are general courses that train in the theory and approach to project management rather than relate to a specific industry. For the smaller project experience in Contracts/site management with Quantity Surveying capability are the areas that are required with a good knowledge of the Building Regulations, Health and Safety Legislation(possibly a CIOB/ APS qualification) and more so now how best to achieve various levels of code of sustainability housing. Good negotiating skills are also a bonus in getting you the best rates possible. There is no substitute for good experience in the field.
You need to check out their CV, along with previous projects and Client references. A good PM will get your project out on programme, within budget, in a safe working environment and to a good standard of finish.

Hi Nogs

You're welcome. If you are seriously looking for a project manager, dependant in which part of the country you are looking to build, check out my website www.c2cprojectmanagement.com. It will give you an idea of the services you can expect by using the project management route, and as a domestic Client your project will be non-notifiable, you won't need a CDM-Co-ordinator.Good luck with your project.

John

I am a construction project manager who works directly for both commercial or domestic clients in the South West, although I can be tempted further afield for the right project.

Nogs,
Sorry I'm a bit late to this discussion. Look for experience above all else in your project manager. That's not really the correct term anyway as Project management is a huge field. As you can see above I refer as a construction project manager. I don't want to tread on any big wigs toes here... Be careful in your choice , the cost of managing your project should be easily recovered by efficiency savings and also it should be cheaper than a main contractor. The benefits are enormous but the major point is that he is your man and should have no other agenda, so look out for partner firms such as framing companies or builders merchants. if your CPM is truly independent he will not be getting kick backs from anyone.

Good luck mate and if you click onto my website www.sfsmancon.co.uk you will find some free advice...You wont get that everywhere, although you will find some of the copy familiar as others keep pinching it!.
