Cedar Cladding replacement?
We are building a contemporary detached house with white rendered walls, zinc roof and alluminium windows. Half of the walls are to be clad, but we dislike the silver effect of cedar cladding after a few years, to me it looks tatty! So we need a timber finish that retains the colour of the wood, any ideas? Factory pre treated stains?

I am in complete agreement with you on this and am surprised that more people haven't mentioned this before. The 'patina' as architects like to call it is far from beautiful and looks in need of a good coat of paint. Fortunately the right product is at hand - a Norwegian company callen Jotun makes a paint called Butinox that works perfectly. It is available in a range of opaque and translucent finishes, in oil based and water based formulae. Their UK HQ is in Glasgow, though the paint is available from a number of distributors. It is important you use a microporous paint to allow the wood to breathe, and this is about the best there is. The timber building suppliers swear by it.

Cheers Mark, will look into this,

I'm using siberian larch to clad my house and I've looked into Butinox but I am going for Sikkens Cetol BL sytem. I live quite near the sea and a family friend who lives on the other side of the bay did his house over a year ago and it still looks as good as new.
