I'd like to rewire my house to put in an automated multi room system withlights and music controlled from one central point. Is this possible and does anyone have any ideas of cost and any recommended companies?

This is possible and with regard to cost its all down to the size of the system you require, number of rooms, number of light circuits dimming etc.

We do this type of work with various makes of systems some have the ability to integrate with each other some don't.

If you give me more info on the type of system you are looking for, I could try and give you some ideas of cost.

With regard to rewiring please remember that on the 230v side you would need to be a registered part P domestic installer or notify the Local Building Inspector before you start. In some areas the inspectors will not approve work done by DIY enthusiasts as they themselves are not fully converse in the 17th edition. If they do you will need the testing by a competent person. Note Part P electricians can not issue Installation Certificates for work not installed by them under their insurance and scheme rules.

To be honest it’s a bit of a mess at the minute there is no real consistency throughout the country with regard to Part P. My best advice is get a registered Part P electrician that way you can sell your house with no issue’s when the time comes and you get a 6 years warranty through their scheme operator (NICEIC, NAPIT, etc)

By the way what part of the country are you in?

Hope this helps

I assume you would like to install all the source equipment (DVD Players, Sky etc) centrally and be able to control seperatly in each room (Also use one screen) to control lights and Audio/Video. AS 21stcenturyelectrics have stated, there are plenty of products that can do this - it does all depend upon the size of system and the finished look.

An example...

i'd basically like to acheive something similar to what is described in this project: http://www.homebuilding.co.uk/your-projects/renovating-1970s-house (in the last few paras). The ceiling speakers and being able to control music in the principal rooms are particularly appealing.

I think i'd need the basic equipment plus wiring, and speakers for five rooms, upstairs and down. I don't really want it to be too obvious or flashy, which is why speakers set into the ceiling seem like the best way to go.

Any opinions on if this is the best option, or is there a better way?

Hello Zim,

Most systems can achieve what your asking. Im assuming the Ipod dock is a local input and will be able to play throught the ceiling speakers. Also do you intend all five rooms to be main zones? (select audio/video source from each room, or for example is one an en-suite where you can either listen to the main zone ((bedroom)) or connect a local source ((ipod)). this sub zone input cannot be distributed through out the property)

Wireless lighting - some systems are really effective and can be integrated into the audio LCD screen.

Ceiling speakers are always a good option but have you considered plaster in speakers (pricey but really effective)

Hi Zim,
Hoem automation should not be obvious or flashy in the slightest - but is when you press your buttons and loads of things happen! All the workings and cables should be hidden and any decent system will be be easthetically please to you eye. After all, it's you that chooses the style and equipment - a Custom Installer (CI) will show you your options.

Contact your local Custom Installer because the size of the rooms and level of equipment and specification will all be down to your preferences and budget. I'm in the Wales and West area if that is near you, or if you want me to find you a local CI the let me know.
All the best and good luck! :)
John
