Grade II New Build With Basement

Walls emerge

Posted by Fay Plumb on 5th February 2010

Once the snows cleared from Christmas we have been inundated with builders!  It has been amazing the speed the ground floor has gone up in just the last two weeks, and the house has taken shape.  We now have the outline of the ground floor rooms constructed in blocks – at last it is possible to imagine it might actually be a house we are building.

This is a picture from early January

Whilst the inside walls have been constructed, the external stone facing has likewise been built from all the stone George and his team were shaping, whilst the snow stopped any other work.  The stone is neatly attached with metal wall ties to the internal wall with a great chunk of insulation in between – quite a different method to our 17th century cottage next door, where the two stone walls were created complete with cavity, filled with rubble and not tied together.

And just five days later...

As the working drawings for each stage are released by our Architect, the number of decisions required increases by the week.  Whilst we specified internal fittings, such as two wood burning stoves over a year ago, models and prices have changed, and so I have found myself re-doing the leg work – a little frustrating at times, but at least it gives us an opportunity to confirm our preference for styles etc.  Interestingly, some prices have decreased.

In the next week, we hope to hear from the Planning Department regarding the outstanding conditions of our planning permission, which we still need to have approved, such as boundary fence construction and the Juliet balcony design.  We decided to take responsibility for these ourselves, when we changed Architects prior to seeking Building regs – how successful we are at it will be revealed in the coming week!

Fay and her husband are taking on a new-build next door to their grade II thatched cottage. They want to achieve the ‘normal height’ rooms they are lacking presently and make the most of the surrounding views. Their plans for a basement will also create the extra space they desperately want.

Introduction - Hi!

Fleur Hindt's photo

Hi Fay, just started my own blog the other day, so have started searching the net finding other crazy people insane enough to take on the daunting task of completing a home build themselves. It's kinda nice knowing your not alone on this challenging and insane ride. Looks like some progress is happening for you and that is really exciting. We are two years into our project and still have not moved in! Keep in touch and view my site from time to time.
