Confessions of a Self-builder

The tide is turning

Posted by David Snell on 1st April 2009

A few weeks ago my builder sold his home within a few days of putting it on the market. When the purchaser's surveyor came around he complained that he was rushed off his feet. I saw it as a sign but didn't think that much of it.
Then last week I sold my current home and yesterday my purchaser's surveyor came around. "How's business?" I asked. "Never better he replied.
We chatted and he told me that in February 08 he was surveying 1 to 2 a day. Then By Christmas 08 it had dropped to 1 a week.
Now it's averaging out at 9 a week.
Maybe that precious light is at the end of the tunnel. Maybe those doomsayers who've talked the market down for their own ends in defiance of all the laws of supply and demand will miss the boat because, as I recently wrote, when the market turns it will turn quickly.

Third party right of appeal

Ruth Whitehead's photo

After two years of hellish battling with local and district councils, we took our proposals to committee who voted 10-1 to grant us planning permission. I am now hearing rumours that someone is still trying to appeal against this decision. We have not yet begun our project, we hope to start at the end of April, can this objector really stop our self-build?
Has this Third Party Right of Appeal already kicked in?
Can anyone help ensure our planning permission is secure?
