Oak framed traditional style self-build, Cheshire

Best Timber Frame and Readers' Choice Award Winner

John and Janet’s new oak framed home – built across the lane from the house in which they had lived for the best part of 30 years – is an embodiment of their aspirations for a character-packed, energy-efficient retirement home. One of John and Janet’s key aims was for a flexible, accessible home that would comfortably house visiting children and grandchildren. This is a comfortable, stylish home that meets all their requirements perfectly; situated on an idyllic rural site and pretty much the perfect place to enjoy family life to the full. It cost around £400,000 to build (£2,424/m²) and took around 18 months to complete.

"Oak framed houses never fail to be packed with character. What makes this special is the flexible living arrangements and the ideal rural plot."

Jason Orme, Editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine

"With the exposed oak frame already silvering and the self-coloured render infill panels beginning to age, and Staffordshire blue plain clay tiles on the roof, this very traditional style house is already beginning to look established within its setting and will soon blend in seamlessly with the fabric of the landscape."

Michael Holmes, Editor-in-Chief of Homebuilding & Renovating, Period Living and Real Homes magazines

"Well conceived and executed oak frame project. The empty nester owners have carefully researched the project and really achieved the house they wanted. Except the nest is no longer empty following return of 1 child and her family."

Peter Harris, Managing Director of Centaur Special Interest Media

"How do you accessorise oak? With yet more oak! This house probably cost half a forest but lovely to see old techonologies in use."

Angela Pertusini, former Editor of The Daily Telegraph’s award-winning Property section
