The Tin Shed

Vote now for your favourite homeSituated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Llyn Penisula, with a stunning panoramic view of the whole of Wales was a 1930s tin shed in need of extensive renovation.

The owner says “my suggestion was to create a ‘rear extension’ to the property which would be invisible, being dug underground into the mountainside behind the exhibiting property, and therefore not disrupt the locale. My proposal was to keep the timber interior and footprint of the original property, but clad the exterior with local stone and a welsh slate roof, to give the appearance of a traditional cottage. The new underground extension would be separated by a glass atrium and roofed with turf so as to appear invisible from the road above and behind the cottage”.

The resultant building is extremely flexible, being cosy for two but able to sleep up to ten for holiday use. “My desire was to minimise the environmental impact in an AONB, so that the passer-by would think the cottage has always looked like that, but at the same time maximise the spectacular views for occupants, and offer modern facilities and energy efficiency. It has achieved all these requirements in spades, and that is why I think it is special”.

I love this house! Its like something out of Lord of the Rings, with the extension being hidden underground...or like Doctor Who's tardis, looks small from the outside but inside is much bigger! Love it!

This house cetainly gets my vote - one of the most stunning locations in the world!! The sensitivity of the design to the location, alone, deserves the award.

Congratulations

Tin Shed

This is a wonderful example of how existing buildings can be converted into wonderful homes without impacting on the surrounding countryside. Whilst the other houses in the competition are indeed quite spectacular it is far easier to produce a home from scratch than it is to, not only adapt a current building (a tin shed!!!) but also do so in such a way that it has no visual impact on the surrounding environment.
This project demonstrates imagination, care, taste and subtlety to produce a home that is sympathetic with its locale. Brilliant.
