Contemporary riverside self-build, Devon
Winner: Best Contemporary Home
Peter and Sue Salter have built a new contemporary home on a spectacular riverside site formerly occupied by an old bungalow. The house, designed by Stan Bolt Architects, is designed to make the most of the views and is based around a double height glass atrium drum, which is used as an informal sitting space. The kitchen and dining areas open out onto the garden through sliding doors, and the rest of the house is a mix of double height spaces, luxury bedrooms and bathrooms and even a glass floor. There’s also a basement with a home cinema and home office with views over the river. The project cost £660,000 (£1,222/m2) – remarkable given the home’s size, complexity of design and quality of finish.

"A masterclass in how to make the most of a lovely riverside site. This is one of the homes you have always dreamed of living in, but you can’t help but feel you wouldn’t do it quite as well as Peter and Sue have."
Jason Orme, Editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine
"If you were to ever bore of the views the house also featured an indoor swimming pool, gym, steam room and a home cinema at lower ground floor level."
Michael Holmes, Editor-in-Chief of Homebuilding & Renovating, Period Living and Real Homes magazines
"The movie set project. Very cool if you like contemporary minimalism. Curved atrium questionable. Site and house totally to die for."
Peter Harris, Managing Director of Centaur Special Interest Media
"Stan Bolt does it again – a fabulous slice of West Country modernism with one of the best views and most stunning lawns of the trip."
