The Oak House

The owners have thoroughly enjoyed creating their own home from the rubble of the original derelict barns – “it is a delight to live in and a very personal and fulfilling representation of our dream”.

“It can be difficult to pinpoint what makes it so special to us, but the quality of craftsmanship throughout has been an important element of the project and one we have been anxious to get right, to the smallest detail. It was also important to use natural, sympathetic materials, such as reclaimed local stone and green oak, that reflect the incredible setting. These materials are also long lasting and beautiful in their own right which has helped the house mellow and soften into the plot.

We didn’t want a conventional renovation and were perhaps fortunate that the poor state of the barns provided us with the opportunity to blend traditional skills with a  more modern approach. This has enabled us to ass significant areas of floor to ceiling glass – which embrace and frame the 360 degree views and dramatic season changes. We felt that the stunning location deserved a really unique and interesting layout and the decision to position rooms to take full advantage of our amazing location has been one of the best.

We are very proud of what we have created and our builders have produced – it has been hard work (especially living in a caravan throughout some very challenging weather) but the end result is, for us, simply perfect.

What amazing glazing! The outside really comes inside, very unusual for a heavy oak frame building.

Stunning

This is proof that the most seemingly unachievable self build dreams can become reality!

I Admire how the silvering oak beams, local stone and glazing all complement each other, both internally and externally.

Totally stunning and a fine example of vision, belief and craftsmanship coming together fantastically!

Well Done.

Wow, what a beautiful home - and a complete transformation too! Just shows what self builders are capable of.
I love the mix of oak framing, glass, local stone and render which seem to be weathering really nicely. And the view looks incredible - congratulations to the owners.

Do the owners have a website for the build - would be interesting to see any of the in progress pics ?
Well done on being first at the moment in the voting states.

The Oak House - more pics

I love The Oak House - it's truly stunning but the pictures on here don't do it justice. I found some more images on the Border Oak website at www.borderoak.com and then clicking on 'portfolio' and then the feature project. It's such a beautiful house - I'm so jealous!!

It surprised me how unattractive the other homes where next to it.
It is stunning from the outside something you would like to live in yourself.Beautiful in the inside and looks very rustic and elegant.
A real winner in my books.

A great mix of traditional and contemporary I think - and wonderfully livable too. I really admire how hard they must have worked to achieve the end result. Brilliant

I know this house and the couple that live there and they are very lovely people who have worked incredibly hard to rebuild, renovate and rescue the stone barn - transforming it into a 21st century home by adding on oak frame sections and lots of glass. It is impossible to explain how much love, passion and effort they have put in and how dedicated they were to building an exceptional house to do justice to the remarkable site.

I really admire the 'self build spirit' that sees people graft week in week out to create individual homes that celebrate the best of British craftsmanship. And here is the perfect example - they built their dream home - not an architects vision, or a catalogue of cliches with added Eco bling - just a great, homely, exciting and eccentric home to LIVE in. Well Done - I hope you win.

Simply fabulous, in every aspect. It's nice to see modern design techniques combine so well with traditional materials and building methods.
I have witnessed many attempts to balance contemporary and traditional designs go so drastically wrong, congratulations the Oak House gets it spot on.

I just love the before and after shots! I know just how hard you must have worked to create such an imaginative and spectacular result!
