Castle Ring
Castle Ring is an oak framed house designed and built entirely by the owners with no previous experience. It is the first and only house they have ever owned and is the realisation of a dream to create a family home in a working woodland.
The oak frame is sheathed externally by another softwood stick frame providing excellent insulation values with 200mm of warmcel. A grouped source heat pump, underfloor heating upstairs and downstairs ensure that the house performs efficiently (hot water and heating costs £600 pa) and sustainably. Externally the building is clad in larch which we sourced as logs from a local estate and milled on site. They also used this larch as structural framing timbers in parts of the house to keep costs under control.
“We now have a stunning home which is worth over 4 times what it cost to build – not that we ever intend moving”.

Wooden home
I think that this house is lovely, will the wood on the outside stay this colour as it gets older or has it been stained this colour?
Castle Ring self build.
This is an excellent house, and shows the true spirit of what the self build awards should be about. A self builder who has the passion and deternination to build a home to their own vision and get involved.
Just signing the cheques on an architect lead project is not my idea of a "self build" so well done, it's a great home.
love the curvey timbers
love the curvey timbers really cosy looking, and not overly grand.
love it, I'd like to see lots more photos.

Wow, I didn't realise that there could be such differences in the style of the wooden frame. This one has real individual style with all the bent bits of wood. very individual.

It is so lovely to see people's dreams come true, and I can see why.
The frame is just fabulous. And the interior is so tasteful.
Congratulations, I hope you win a prize!
I'm amazed
To build the timber frame himself is amazing for a first time self builder.
Such self beleif and commitment should be recognised.

Castle Ring
is this a true self build? the owner/"self builder" appears to own an oak framing co and this is his "show house" it features heavily on the co web site!

I know Rob, it was a genuine self build, he built his own house, and with that experiance he now makes small oak frames for other people.
It's safe to say that in this case the self build was a life changing experiance.

Very disaqppointed that a 'Show House' for a company should be allowed in a competion with genuine self builders. Very diappointed shame on you.

OK. As far as I'm aware Rob, the owner, built this house in his own time and then went on to set up his own oak frame business having enjoyed the process so much. For several years the couple were in fact pig farmers and lived in a mobile home, on site, for seven years.
I don't think this could be in any way classed as a showhouse, although I'd expect, quite understandably, Rob to use it to show potential clients what he can achieve.
None of this changes the fact that Rob and Alithia built the house using their own labour on a remarkable budget and the same could be achieved by anyone. Rob went on a timber framing course and learnt how to build an oak frame in the same way anyone else could. I don't think the fact that he then went on to form a company on the back of it affects their achievement at all.
