Remodelling of 1970s home, Lancashire

Overall Winner & Best Renovation

Overall_winnerSometimes unloved homes just need someone with a bit of vision – and it was Shaun Beverley who could see the potential in a 1970s detached home on a secluded plot that no-one seemed to be interested in buying. Shaun understood that the design of homes in the 1970s has many parallels with those built today — big, light rooms and strong rooflines – and set about a programme of restoration, refurbishment and improvement that has resulted in an achingly stylish home. Shaun has fully embraced the 1970s interiors – down to the leopard-skin wallpaper – and created a chic, fun home that all of a sudden makes you think twice about unfashionable houses in your own area. Shaun spent £190,000 (£883/m²) on the project.

"The perfect example of why vision is the fundamental ingredient of any successful project. What’s more, Shaun has understood what is worth leaving alone, and what needs improving. This is a stylish and sophisticated home."

Jason Orme, Editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine

"A clever remodel of an original 1970s one-off architect designed house, the building has retained its original angular form, and much of its layout and structure, but has been given a new contemporary exterior that has given it a new lease of life: many would simply have knocked it down and started again."

Michael Holmes, Editor-in-Chief of Homebuilding & Renovating, Period Living and Real Homes magazines

"Thoughtful contemporisation of previously multi tenanted wreck. Familiar palette of materials but cleverly employed to create some private nooks. All in all a very smart project."

Peter Harris, Managing Director of Centaur Special Interest Media
