Extension and remodel of 1930s bungalow, Preston
Winner of the Reader's Choice Award: Renovations category
Architect Zoran has pushed the capacity of a 1930s bungalow to its limits through a programme of extension and remodelling that renders the original house barely recognisable. Zoran and Sandra, keen to stay in their leafy suburb that was handily close to family, have increased the floor area of the bungalow by 150%. It now comprises a series of open plan spaces straddling a central circulation corridor that provide both interesting architectural space and impressive living accommodation. From the outside, both the front and rear elevations show off Zoran’s skills with contemporary architecture. The project cost around £150,000 (£789/m²) over three years.

"Who could have imagined a 1930s bungalow could be pushed this far? Zoran has tested the boundaries of renovation to the extreme and created a clever contemporary home made all the more astonishing by its modest roots."
Jason Orme, Editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine
"The bungalow is still in there if you look for it: roof, Accrington brick walls and all, but has had two almost symmetrical monopitched timber and steel wings grafted into it, forming a sort of flattened M-shaped profile, increasing the footprint considerably whilst also totally disguising the building’s original form."
Michael Holmes, Editor-in-Chief of Homebuilding & Renovating, Period Living and Real Homes magazines
"10 year labour of love for architect and partner transforming v ordinary house into something unique with mainly DIY labour. Some great flourishes."
Peter Harris, Managing Director of Centaur Special Interest Media
"Amazing what you can do with a bungalow - will definitely be ripping off their balustrade-cum-desk design."
Angela Pertusini, former Editor of The Daily Telegraph’s award-winning Property section

REMODELED BUNGALOW
THIS GOES TO SHOW WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH AN UNINSPIRING BUILDING. HATS-OFF TO THE CLEVER ARCHITECT HERE WITH VISION...
Remodelling a bungalow
Hi Zoran & Sandra
Have just seen your magnificent remodelling and am blown away.
Have just acquired a 1950's brick built edifice of similar type.
Can you recommend how to go about the redesign/who to approach?
kind regards
Anthony
Remodelling a bungalow
Hi Anthony
Hope you dont mind me dropping you a line after all this time as I only recently revisted the Home and Renovating website to see your enquiry. So my apology for not responding sooner.
Many thanks for your kind words about our home. We were thrilled with the response particularly as we were in two minds about contacting Home and Renovating magazine about our humble project.
In answer to your question a good starting point is to contact the architect and arrange a meeting to go through the brief for the project. From this initial meeting sketch design drawings and further discussions/meetings will allow the design to evolve to a point where all parties are pleased with the final scheme. A planning submission follows subject to the type of work proposed as not all remodelling/ alteration work requires planning permission.
I have attached my architect's practice details if you still require contact deetails which is:

Hope the above is helpful.
Thanks again for your interest and hope to speak to you soon.
